eBooks Speed Dating: Who’s in the Driver Seat Going Forward?

Probably more than any technology, digital formats have changed the nature of libraries, expanding opportunities for technology advancements and affecting user behaviors. Many lessons have been learned with how eBooks are acquired, licensed by libraries and used worldwide. Libraries are shifting their focus on collections and management, becoming more aware of their community’s mobility, opportunity to read and seek information from many locales, modes and devices. A known and growing commodity, eBooks will only increase their presence and availability

    Inter- and intra-hierarchical verbal relatedness

SummaryTwo measurement techniques have been used to assess associative strength between words, conventional word association, and the associative overlap. The former is a measure of the relative importance of individual meaning responses in their associative hierarchies and the latter measures similarity in the distribution of partial meaning responses. We have called these two kinds of associative strength Intra-hierarchical Relatedness and Inter-hierarchical Relatedness, respectively. A clustering and a retention experiment were performed to determine if these two kinds of associative strengths operate independently. The results indicate that, dependent upon the nature of the task, both may independently influence verbal behavior.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32195/1/0000253.pd

Monitoring Title Volatility in E-book Subscription Collections: Using Data to Enlighten Acquisition Decisions and Demystify Aggregator-Publisher Relationships

This paper assesses title volatility in ebrary\u27s Academic Complete subscription collection. Title volatility, titles withdrawn and added, challenge assumptions about the cost and curation of ebook subscription collections. The research reveals higher than expected title volatility, examines volatility using publisher and MARC record data and makes future projections

Short-term retention of paired associates as a function of instructions and retention measure

Two sets of instructions (traditional paired-associate instructions and special instructions to mediate) and three retention tasks (free recall, modified free recall, and recognition matching) were used to investigate the unlearning of first-list associates when an A-B, A-C paradigm was used in a short-term memory (STM) situation. Experimental Ss were given 2 sec per pair to learn two A-B pairs and two A-C pairs and then 10 sec of interpolated number reading before a retention test was administered. Control Ss learned only List-1 pairs and had additional interpolated material to equate retention interval. Performance was poorer for the experimental group than the control group in all conditions except with mediating instructions and the recognition-matching task. These results provide evidence for unlearning in STM and provide further support for a two-stage model of unlearning.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/33192/1/0000580.pd

Mashing Up Data to Demystify User Behavior: A Collaborative Exploration

Presented at the 2015 Access Services Conference, Georgia Tech Global Learning Center and the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center, November 11-13, 2015, Atlanta, Georgia.Jeremy Garskof is the Acquisitions Librarian at Gettysburg College.Ronalee Ciocco is the Director of User Services at Gettysburg College.Data collection in libraries is pervasive. How should the data be interpreted and who should do it? Learn how librarians at Gettysburg College engaged in collaborative interpretation to analyze interlibrary loan transactions, document delivery data, and turn-away reports in order to assess services and to better understand undergraduates’ research habits and preferences. In the spirit of assessment, to improve services and to justify expenditures, Access Services and Acquisitions aggregated interlibrary loan transactions, document delivery data, and turn-away reports to better understand information seeking patterns and preferences and to inform future resource allocation decisions. The project gave each respective department an opportunity to interact with and interpret data and reports that traditionally resided in one area, generally in an email or spreadsheet on the intranet. Specifically, the analysis measured relative efficiencies, i.e., availability and delivery time, compared actual and associated costs, and attempted to correlate turn-aways with ILL transactions and/or document delivery requests (we don’t want to give too much away). The presentation will cover methodological approaches to analyzing mega-data and local decisions to (dis)continue services as well as lessons learned and conclusions drawn
