Using Data Curation Profiles (DCPs) as a means of raising data management awareness

    Get PDF
While one can discuss data management plans in a general sense, there is no single solution for managing the diverse data generated by various disciplines and projects. Therefore one possible solution is to determine best practices for individual data management plans guided by a more general Data Curation Profile (DCP). The DCPs were created at Purdue University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Using a DCP, librarians and/or researchers explore various data management issues. Once a profile has been completed, not only will the librarian have a richer understanding of the kind and quantity of data that might have to be curated and archived, but the researcher will have a better understanding of their data preferences related to sharing and intellectual property, regardless of where the data ultimately resides. Current applications of the DCP at Purdue will be discussed. [ACS Abstract

On the Efficient Evaluation of the Azimuthal Fourier Components of the Green\u27s Function for the Helmholtz\u27s Equation in Cylindrical Coordinates

    Get PDF
In this dissertation, we develop an efficient algorithm to evaluate the azimuthal Fourier components of the Green’s function for the Helmholtz equation in cylindrical coordinates. A computationally efficient algorithm for this modal Green’s function is essential for solvers for electromagnetic scattering from bodies of revolution (e.g., radar cross sections, antennas). Current algorithms to evaluate this modal Green’s function become computationally intractable when the source and target are close or when the wavenumber is large. Furthermore, most of the state of the art methods cannot easily be parallelized. In this work, we present an algorithm for evaluating the modal Green’s function that has performance independent of both source-to-target proximity and wavenumber, and whose cost grows as O(m). Furthermore, our algorithm is embarrassingly parallelizable

Changing nature of academic librarianship: Implementing a distributed institutional repository

    Get PDF
Librarians at Purdue University are adapting to the implementation of a distributed institutional repository (DIR). Traditionally, a librarian\u27s role in the cycle of scholarly communication has been focused on the products of research: books, articles, dissertations, etc. The DIR is pushing the librarian\u27s role further back in the cycle by assisting and advising researchers on how their data can best be collected, tagged, and stored. In some cases, librarians are even becoming embedded within research groups. Once in the DIR, these data sets and other non-traditional types of information are just as accessible as books and journal articles. The DIR is opening up new avenues of research for librarians and allowing for renewed interactions with faculty across disciplines. This paper will look at how the role of an academic librarian is changing in regard to the implementation of a DIR on campus, including successes and pitfalls. [ACS Abstract

Enhancing information resources and instruction with computational and chemical software

    Get PDF
As the Chemistry Library begins to move journal subscriptions to electronic only access and experiments with e-books, physical space in the Library has been reallocated. One such transformation has allowed for installation of ten new computers within the Library. Not only do these workstations mirror current workstations throughout the rest of the University Libraries system, but they also have been enhanced with additional software for visualization, statistical anal., and data manipulation. As our users deal with more and more data compared to text based resources, adding these computational workstations appeared to be the next logical step. Besides being an open lab for any library patron, this new facility will also be used for small group instruction and demonstrations for new or enhanced library resources. This paper will describe the process for designing the lab, choosing the software, implementation of the facility, and evaluation of its use. [ACS Abstract

Lady Macbeth, The Ill-Fated Queen: Exploring Shakespearean Themes of Ambition, Sexuality, Witchcraft, Patrilineage, and Matricide in Vocal Settings of Verdi, Shostakovich, and Pasatieri

    Get PDF
This exploration of three vocal portrayals of Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth investigates the transference of themes associated with the character is intended as a study guide for the singer preparing these roles. The earliest version of the character occurs in the setting of Verdi's Macbeth, the second is the archetypical setting of Lady Macbeth found in the character Katerina Ismailova from Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District, based on the Nicolai Leskov novella of the same title, and the third is Thomas Pasatieri's monodrama Lady Macbeth, which uses significant excerpts from Shakespeare in a solo vocal pastiche of the arc of her character. The archetypical qualities of Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth are established, and incorporate analyses from different historical and cultural contexts, including medical discourse from the time of Shakespeare, the English witchcraft trials of the 17th century, and shifting patriarchal conditions, as well as feminist and psychological perceptions of her character. The ways in which significant stage interpretations of Lady Macbeth from her inception through the Victorian Age have influenced, and in some cases, been influenced by, these vocal works. Archetypical discourse, performance practice, and societal perceptions of Lady Macbeth establish a baseline by which elements specific to the operatic genre and vocal idiom are addressed, including placement and conception of the work in the composer's oeuvre, circumstances affecting the compositional process, including revisions both voluntary (Verdi), and unexpected (Shostakovich), and how societal norms and varying levels of patriarchal dominance affect the representation of Lady Macbeth's motivations in performance interpretations. Adaptations in the vocal libretti of critical moments of character development are discussed in terms of omissions of certain lines and their implications with regard to character motivation and development. Though many variables exist within these vocal settings, a baseline of archetypical qualities of Lady Macbeth relative to Shakespeare is highly applicable to proper preparation and characterization

Teaching students to use company and industry information during their job search

    Get PDF
Libraries and educational institutions provide access to a wide variety of resources that are useful in investigating potential employers, preparing for interviews, and predicting trends in industry. However, often this information is not found in traditional scientific and tech. resources that many chem. and chem. engineering students are familiar with using. This paper will present a no. of strategies for using company and industry resources to look at financial information, industry developments, and opinions of current employees, among other attributes, to better help student prep. themselves for the job market. Providing for graduate student information needs at a large research university

    Get PDF
Graduate students at a large research university often have many information needs-from choosing a research advisor, to creating and pursuing their research agenda, to deciding on where to go after graduation. In addition., many of them have insufficient information seeking skills. The M.G. Mellon Library of Chem. at Purdue U. attempts to address many of these issues by the focused and proactive provision of resources and services to graduate students. Besides instructing graduate students on common chem. information resources, the staff of the Chem. Library provides additional services, such as after-hours access and assistance with bibliographic management software, to enhance the educational and research experience. In additional, a biweekly series of seminars, called Ice Cream Seminars, are provided every year to help acclimatize new graduate students to these and other resources provided by the Purdue University Libraries. This talk will highlight the services provided by the Chem. Library, from the day potential graduate students visit campus to the day they graduate and are off to pursue future endeavors (and sometimes, even after that). [ACS Abstract

Broadening the possibilities of reformulating a project in oldage: a proposal of approach

    Get PDF
This work consists of the preparation of a guiding proposal framed in the work in mental health with older adults, destined to promote and accompany the reformulation of the identification project (Aulagnier, 1991) within a group device. We start with a critical review of the concepts and conceptions that have consolidated certain ways of understanding both old age and the processes that surround it, and then position ourselves in a complex perspective that encourages innovative and stimulating proposals for working with older adults. This work refers specifically to the orientative work framed in groupality and joint participation, mediated by the transversality of the developments in psychology and psychoanalysis, which allow to generate new tools in the strengthening of Mental Health in the elderly. This conceptual and reflective exercise decided in a proposal presented to the management of a Day Center for Older Adults of the city of La Plata in 2017, which sought to promote a new way of approaching workshops of stimulation and activities that produce subjective changes through participation, historicization and creativity. This same elaborated proposal will be retaken here as an exponent of the convergence between an ethical positioning in front of old age and the proposal of an innovative approach for the development of stimulating activities in an institution.Facultad de PsicologĂ
