    EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENTS AND THEIR PREGNANT AND NON-PREGNANT ADOLESCENT DAUGHTERS

    Introduction: Family is an important socialization environment for children, which has influence on adolescent behaviour, and may constitute a risk and/or protection factor on a child’s development. Objective: To describe the relationships between parenting practices and the occurrence of pregnancy in adolescents. Methods: Semi-estructured interviews were used with 11 adolescents (5 pregnant and 6 non-pregnant) who were 15 to 19 years old. The Inventário de Estilos Parentais (Parenting Styles Inventory; – PSI) was used to measure the maternal and paternal practices with adolescents. Thematic content analysis was used to analyse the interviews. The PSI was administered as proposed by the manual. Results: There were differences and similarities in the relationships of pregnant and non-pregnant adolescents with their parents. The relationship with the mother seemed to be more positive among young women who did not have a pregnancy experience. There was also more negative maternal child rearing practices among pregnant adolescents as compared to non-pregnant adolescents. However, the relationships with the fathers were similar between the two groups as the fathers’ educational practices were negative among both the young pregnant women and the non-pregnant women. Conclusions: Maternal educational practices, but not paternal, seem to be associated with the occurrence of adolescent pregnancy

    Conocimientos y prácticas sobre métodos anticonceptivos en jóvenes universitarios

    O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar o conhecimento de universitários sobre métodos contraceptivos e sua utilização na primeira relação sexual e no momento da coleta de dados. Foi aplicado um questionário sobre dados sociodemográficos, conhecimentos e práticas contraceptivas a 293 universitários. A maioria dos entrevistados já teve relações sexuais. Contraceptivos foram utilizados por 91,7% das jovens e 81,3% dos participantes do sexo masculino na iniciação sexual, e por 96,3% das participantes e 90,0% dos jovens no último ano. O preservativo foi mais utilizado na iniciação sexual, sendo parcialmente substituído pela pílula nas relações subsequentes. Os métodos mais conhecidos pelos participantes foram o preservativo e a pílula anticoncepcional. Constatou-se a influência dos papéis de gênero e de fatores como o contexto do relacionamento e o tempo de atividade sexual nas práticas sexuais.The aim of this study was to verify university students’ knowledge about contraceptive methods and its use during their first sexual experience and during data collection. A questionnaire about sociodemographic data, information level and contraceptive practices was administered to 239 students. The majority of the people interviewed had already engaged in a sexual intercourse. In the first sexual experience, 91,7% of women and 81,3% of men used contraceptives, whereas over their last year 96% of women and 90% of men used. Condoms were most used in sexual initiation, being partially substituted for pills in their following relations. Pills and condoms were the most known contraceptive methods. Gender role and factors such as relationships context and time of sexual activity were considered influences in sexual practices.Este estudio investigó el conocimiento de universitarios acerca de los métodos anticonceptivos y su utilización en la primera relación y en el momento de la recogida de datos. Un cuestionario sobre datos sociodemográficos, conocimientos y prácticas anticonceptivas fue aplicado a 293 estudiantes universitarios. La mayoría de los encuestados han tenido relaciones sexuales. Anticonceptivos fueron utilizados por 91,7% de las jóvenes y 81,3% de los participantes del sexo masculinos en la primera relación sexual, y el 96,3% de las participantes y el 90,0% de los jóvenes en el último año. El condón es el método más utilizado a la iniciación sexual, siendo sustituido en parte por la píldora en las relaciones posteriores. Los métodos más conocidos eran el condón y la píldora. Se encontró la influencia de los roles de género y los factores situacionales, como el contexto de la relación y el tiempo de la actividad sexual

    Life-Space Mobility and Aging in Place

    Research on older adults explores the notion of “aging in place”—providing older adults the opportunity to continue to occupy familiar surroundings, to live in their own homes and communities. But oftentimes one’s ability to stay or leave, particularly in old age, depends on the built environment. Mobility is the ability to meet the basic needs to access goods, activities, services, and social interactions as they relate to quality of life. Thus, mobility is essential to older adults due to their limited, or gradually reducing, physical and cognitive abilities. In transportation research, mobility is often regarded in terms of travel behavior and it is measured by the number of outside-home travel. However, in other fields, including public health, it refers to the relative ease and freedom of movement in all of its forms. This study intends to broaden the understanding of the environmental factors on older adults’ mobility in different life spaces, from one’s bedroom to sidewalk, from home to a final destination via walking, public transit and/or driving. We document and examine 1) the ways in which older adults talk about, understand, and make meaning of their experiences and conditions related to life-space mobility and, 2) how these frames of reference guide their ability to be able to age in place. To achieve these aims, we developed a life-space mobility assessment tool and conduct semi-structured interviews with 25 older adults who have participated in home accessibility modification programs in the U.S. Western region. Given that interviewees already have engaged in some level of self-determination to improve their lives at home, we are interested in their life-space mobility and which opportunities they might see to improve their auto sufficiency. Our work provides both a basis and springboard for studying further geographies and discussion about policy initiatives to effectively and equitably address growing mobility disparities

    Reduction of HIV-1 Reservoir Size and Diversity After 1 Year of cART Among Brazilian Individuals Starting Treatment During Early Stages of Acute Infection

    The aim of early combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) of HIV is to limit the seeding of the viral reservoir during the initial phase of infection and, consequently, decrease intrahost viral diversity. Here, we assessed the effect of early cART on size and complexity of the proviral reservoir. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) and plasma samples were obtained from ten HIV-infected Brazilian individuals diagnosed at the acute phase of infection, before (PREART) and 12 months (M12ART) after suppressive cART. HIV proviral reservoir size was determined by quantitative real-time PCR; intrahost viral diversity of the env C2-V3 region was assessed by single genome amplification or next-generation sequencing in PBMC and plasma, respectively. Mean nucleotide diversity (π) and normalized Shannon entropy (HSN) were used to infer the complexity of the viral population. Compared to PREART, M12ART saw an immunological recovery with a gain of ∼200 CD4+ T cells (P = 0.008) and a normalization of the CD4/CD8 ratio [1.0 (IQR: 0.88–1.18), P = 0.016], as well as a significant decrease in HIV-1 RNA (∼4 log, P = 0.004) and DNA (∼1 log, P = 0.002) levels. The median time to achieve viral suppression was 3 months (IQR: 2.8–5.8 months). The high intermixing between sequences from both visits suggests that the HIV-1 DNA reservoir remained remarkably stable under cART. After 1 year of cART, there was a minor reduction in proviral π (PreART = 0.20 vs. M12ART = 0.10; P = 0.156) but a significant decrease in HSN (PreART = 0.41 vs. M12ART = 0.25; P = 0.019). We found no correlation between π or HSN at PreART and the rate of HIV DNA decay, T CD4+ counts, or CD4/CD8 ratio at M12ART. Based on a small cohort of Brazilian infected individuals under early cART and analyses of the env region, 1 year of follow-up suggested a reservoir size reduction, allowed a significant decrease of HIV-1 complexity, and achieved immunological restoration regardless of the initial HIV-1 plasma viral load, CD4+ T cell counts, or HIV-1 subtype. However, further studies in the Brazilian setting aiming a longer follow-up and larger cohort are required in this field

    Measurement of the correlation between flow harmonics of different order in lead-lead collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Correlations between the elliptic or triangular flow coefficients vm (m=2 or 3) and other flow harmonics vn (n=2 to 5) are measured using √sNN=2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collision data collected in 2010 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7 μb−1. The vm−vn correlations are measured in midrapidity as a function of centrality, and, for events within the same centrality interval, as a function of event ellipticity or triangularity defined in a forward rapidity region. For events within the same centrality interval, v3 is found to be anticorrelated with v2 and this anticorrelation is consistent with similar anticorrelations between the corresponding eccentricities, ε2 and ε3. However, it is observed that v4 increases strongly with v2, and v5 increases strongly with both v2 and v3. The trend and strength of the vm−vn correlations for n=4 and 5 are found to disagree with εm−εn correlations predicted by initial-geometry models. Instead, these correlations are found to be consistent with the combined effects of a linear contribution to vn and a nonlinear term that is a function of v22 or of v2v3, as predicted by hydrodynamic models. A simple two-component fit is used to separate these two contributions. The extracted linear and nonlinear contributions to v4 and v5 are found to be consistent with previously measured event-plane correlations

    Measurements of fiducial cross-sections for t\bart production with one or two additional b-jets in pp collisions at √s =8 TeVusing the ATLAS detector

    Fiducial cross-sections for ttˉt\bar{t} production with one or two additional bb-jets are reported, using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb1^{-1} of proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider, collected with the ATLAS detector. The cross-section times branching ratio for ttˉt\bar{t} events with at least one additional bb-jet is measured to be 950 ±\pm 70 (stat.) 190+240^{+240}_{-190} (syst.) fb in the lepton-plus-jets channel and 50 ±\pm 10 (stat.) 10+15^{+15}_{-10} (syst.) fb in the eμe \mu channel. The cross-section times branching ratio for events with at least two additional bb-jets is measured to be 19.3 ±\pm 3.5 (stat.) ±\pm 5.7 (syst.) fb in the dilepton channel (eμe \mu,\,μμ\mu\mu, and \,eeee) using a method based on tight selection criteria, and 13.5 ±\pm 3.3 (stat.) ±\pm 3.6 (syst.) fb using a looser selection that allows the background normalisation to be extracted from data. The latter method also measures a value of 1.30 ±\pm 0.33 (stat.) ±\pm 0.28 (syst.)\% for the ratio of ttˉt\bar{t} production with two additional bb-jets to ttˉt\bar{t} production with any two additional jets.     Measurement of the energy asymmetry in t(t)over-barj production at 13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment and interpretation in the SMEFT framework

    A measurement of the energy asymmetry in jet-associated top-quark pair production is presented using 139fb1139\,{\mathrm {fb}}^{-1} 139 fb - 1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during pp collisions at s=13TeV\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV} s = 13 TeV . The observable measures the different probability of top and antitop quarks to have the higher energy as a function of the jet scattering angle with respect to the beam axis. The energy asymmetry is measured in the semileptonic ttˉt{\bar{t}} t t ¯ decay channel, and the hadronically decaying top quark must have transverse momentum above 350GeV350\,\text {GeV} 350 GeV . The results are corrected for detector effects to particle level in three bins of the scattering angle of the associated jet. The measurement agrees with the SM prediction at next-to-leading-order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics in all three bins. In the bin with the largest expected asymmetry, where the jet is emitted perpendicular to the beam, the energy asymmetry is measured to be 0.043±0.020-0.043\pm 0.020 - 0.043 ± 0.020 , in agreement with the SM prediction of 0.037±0.003-0.037\pm 0.003 - 0.037 ± 0.003 . Interpreting this result in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), it is shown that the energy asymmetry is sensitive to the top-quark chirality in four-quark operators and is therefore a valuable new observable in global SMEFT fits

    Search for invisible particles produced in association with single-top-quarks in proton–proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the production of single-top-quarks in association with missing energy is performed in proton– proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the large hadron collider using data collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. In this search, the W boson from the top quark is required to decay into an electron or a muon and a neutrino. No deviation from the standard model prediction is observed, and upper limits are set on the production cross-section for resonant and non-resonant production of an invisible exotic state in association with a right-handed top quark. In the case of resonant production, for a spin-0 resonance with a mass of 500 GeV, an effective coupling strength above 0.15 is excluded at 95 % confidence level for the top quark and an invisible spin-1/2 state with mass between 0 and 100 GeV. In the case of non-resonant production, an effective coupling strength above 0.2 is excluded at 95 % confidence level for the top quark and an invisible spin-1 state with mass between 0 and 657 GeV
