Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass with a Linear e+e- Collider
The potential of a linear e+e- collider operated at a centre-of-mass energy
of 350 GeV is studied for the measurement of the Higgs boson mass. An
integrated luminosity of 500 fb-1 is assumed. For Higgs boson masses of 120,
150 and 180 GeV the uncertainty on the Higgs boson mass measurement is
estimated to be 40, 65 and 70 MeV, respectively. The effects of beam related
systematics, namely a bias in the beam energy measurement, the beam energy
spread and the luminosity spectrum due to beamstrahlung, on the precision of
the Higgs boson mass measurement are investigated. In order to keep the
systematic uncertainty on the Higgs boson mass well below the level of the
statistical error, the beam energy measurement must be controlled with a
relative precision better than 10-4.Comment: 19 pages, 10 Figure
The Singularity Threshold of the Nonlinear Sigma Model Using 3D Adaptive Mesh Refinement
Numerical solutions to the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM), a wave map from 3+1
Minkowski space to S^3, are computed in three spatial dimensions (3D) using
adaptive mesh refinement (AMR). For initial data with compact support the model
is known to have two regimes, one in which regular initial data forms a
singularity and another in which the energy is dispersed to infinity. The
transition between these regimes has been shown in spherical symmetry to
demonstrate threshold behavior similar to that between black hole formation and
dispersal in gravitating theories. Here, I generalize the result by removing
the assumption of spherical symmetry. The evolutions suggest that the
spherically symmetric critical solution remains an intermediate attractor
separating the two end states.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; To be published in Phys. Rev. D.; Added

The effect of spontaneous collapses on neutrino oscillations
We compute the effect of collapse models on neutrino oscillations. The effect
of the collapse is to modify the evolution of the `spatial' part of the wave
function, which indirectly amounts to a change on the flavor components. In
many respects, this phenomenon is similar to neutrino propagation through
matter. For the analysis we use the mass proportional CSL model, and perform
the calculation to second order perturbation theory. As we will show, the CSL
prediction is very small - mainly due to the very small mass of neutrinos - and
practically undetectable.Comment: 24 pages, RevTeX. Updated versio
Limits on excited tau leptons masses from leptonic tau decays
We study the effects induced by excited leptons on the leptonic tau decay at
one loop level. Using a general effective lagrangian approach to describe the
couplings of the excited leptons, we compute their contributions to the
leptonic decays and use the current experimental values of the branching ratios
to put limits on the mass of excited states and the substructure scale.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Greenhouse designs for Mexico. Aguascalientes, Querétaro and Sinaloa
This study reports on the environmental and economic impacts of greenhouses with different technological levels in the states of Aguascalientes, Querétaro and Sinaloa in Mexico. Seven technology levels were evaluated, varying in the type of substrate, covering material, heating, CO2 enrichment, misting, screens, and the use of re-circulation. Increased technology results in increased production. With increased technology, water use increases (with the exception of the highest level of technology, a semi-closed greenhouse), energy use increases (with the exception of a greenhouse with a screen and a glass-covered greenhouse), water use efficiency increases, but energy use efficiency decreases (with the exception of a glass-covered greenhouse). Net income is highest for a glass-covered greenhouse for Aguascalientes and Querétaro, and for systems with heating, CO2, misting and screens for Sinaloa. If the most simple and closed greenhouse for Aguascalientes and Querétaro are excluded (because they are very different technological levels), then pay-back periods for the remaining scenarios do not differ very much. The pay-back period for Sinaloa is shortest for a system with heating and CO2. Opportunities for the Netherlands supply industry exist in the (further) introduction of recirculation systems (water saving), heating (production, net income), screens and glass greenhouse cover (energy saving, production, net income), geothermal energy and solar panels (renewable energy)

Supersymmetry Breaking and Moduli Stabilization with Anomalous U(1) Gauge Symmetry
We examine the effects of anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry on soft
supersymmetry breaking terms while incorporating the stabilization of the
modulus-axion multiplet responsible for the Green-Schwarz (GS) anomaly
cancellation mechanism. In case of the KKLT stabilization of the GS modulus,
soft terms are determined by the GS modulus mediation, the anomaly mediation
and the U(1)_A mediation which are generically comparable to each other,
thereby yielding the mirage mediation pattern of superparticle masses at low
energy scale. Independently of the mechanism of moduli stabilization and
supersymmetry breaking, the U(1)_A D-term potential can not be an uplifting
potential for de Sitter vacuum when the gravitino mass is smaller than the
Planck scale by many orders of magnitude. We also discuss some features of the
supersymmetry breaking by red-shifted anti-brane which is a key element of the
KKLT moduli stabilization.Comment: 32 pages; references are adde
Reproducibility of computed tomography angiography data analysis using semiautomated plaque quantification software: Implications for the design of longitudinal studies
Reproducibility of the quantitative assessment of atherosclerosis by computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) is paramount for the design of longitudinal studies. The purpose of this study was to assess the inter- and intra-observer reproducibility using semiautomated CT plaque analysis software in symptomatic individuals. CTCA was performed in 10 symptomatic patients after percutaneous treatment of the culprit lesions and was repeated after 3 years. The plaque quantitative analysis was performed in untreated vessels with mild-tomoderate atherosclerosis and included geometrical and compositional characteristics using semiautomated CT plaque analysis software. A total of 945 matched crosssections from 21 segments were analyzed independently by a second reviewer to assess inter-observer variability; the first observer repeated all the analyses after 3 months to assess intra-observer variability. The observer variability was also compared to the absolute plaque changes detected over time. Agreement was evaluated by Bland-Altman analysis and co
Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations and New Physics
We study the robustness of the determination of the neutrino masses and
mixing from the analysis of atmospheric and K2K data under the presence of
different forms of phenomenologically allowed new physics in the nu_mu--nu_tau
sector. We focus on vector and tensor-like new physics interactions which allow
us to treat, in a model independent way, effects due to the violation of the
equivalence principle, violations of the Lorentz invariance both CPT conserving
and CPT violating, non-universal couplings to a torsion field and non-standard
neutrino interactions with matter. We perform a global analysis of the full
atmospheric data from SKI together with long baseline K2K data in the presence
of nu_mu -> nu_tau transitions driven by neutrino masses and mixing together
with sub-dominant effects due to these forms of new physics. We show that
within the present degree of experimental precision, the extracted values of
masses and mixing are robust under those effects and we derive the upper bounds
on the possible strength of these new interactions in the nu_mu--nu_tau sector.Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX file using RevTEX4, 5 figures and 4 tables include
Probing neutrino non-standard interactions with atmospheric neutrino data
We have reconsidered the atmospheric neutrino anomaly in light of the laetst
data from Super-Kamiokande contained events and from Super-Kamiokande and MACRO
up-going muons. We have reanalysed the proposed solution to the atmospheric
neutrino anomaly in terms of non-standard neutrino-matter interactions (NSI) as
well as the standard nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations (OSC). Our statistical
analysis shows that a pure NSI mechanism is now ruled out at 99%, while the
standard nu_mu -> nu_tau OSC mechanism provides a quite remarkably good
description of the anomaly. We therefore study an extended mechanism of
neutrino propagation which combines both oscillation and non-standard
neutrino-matter interactions, in order to derive limits on flavour-changing
(FC) and non-universal (NU) neutrino interactions. We obtain that the
off-diagonal flavour-changing neutrino parameter epsilon and the diagonal
non-universality neutrino parameter epsilon' are confined to -0.03 < epsilon <
0.02 and |epsilon'| < 0.05 at 99.73% CL. These limits are model independent and
they are obtained from pure neutrino-physics processes. The stability of the
neutrino oscillation solution to the atmospheric neutrino anomaly against the
presence of non-standard neutrino interactions establishes the robustness of
the near-maximal atmospheric mixing and massive-neutrino hypothesis. The best
agreement with the data is obtained for Delta_m^2 = 2.3*10^{-3} eV^2,
sin^2(2*theta) = 1, epsilon = 6.7*10^{-3} and epsilon' = 1.1*10^{-3}, although
the chi^2 function is quite flat in the epsilon and epsilon' directions for
epsilon, epsilon' -> 0.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX file using REVTeX4, 1 table and 12 figures included.
