High spectral resolution of GaAs/AlAs phononic cavities by subharmonic resonant pump-probe excitation
We present here precise measurement of the resonance frequency, lifetime and
shape of confined acoustic modes in the tens of GHz regime in GaAs/AlAs
superlattice planar and micropillar cavities at low temperature (). The subharmonic resonant pump-probe technique, where the
repetition rate of the pump laser is tuned to a subharmonic of the cavity
resonance to maximize the amplitude of the acoustic resonance, in combination
with a Sagnac interferometer technique for high sensitivity () to the surface displacement, has been used. The cavity
fundamental mode at and the higher order cavity
harmonics up to have been clearly resolved. Mechanical
Q-values up to have been measured in a planar superlattice,
and direct spatial mapping of confined acoustic modes in a superlattice cavity
micropillar has been demonstrated. The Q-frequency product obtained is demonstrating the suitability of these superlattice cavities
for optomechanical applications.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
X-ray flare modeling in the single giant HR 9024
We analyze a Chandra-HETGS observation of the single G-type giant HR 9024.
The high flux allows us to examine spectral line and continuum diagnostics at
high temporal resolution, to derive plasma parameters (thermal distribution,
abundances, temperature, ...). A time-dependent 1D hydrodynamic loop model with
semi-length 10cm (), and impulsive footpoint heating
triggering the flare, satisfactorily reproduces the observed evolution of
temperature and emission measure, derived from the analysis of the strong
continuum emission. The observed characteristics of the flare appear to be
common features in very large flares in active stars (also pre-main sequence
stars), possibly indicating some fundamental physics for these very dynamic and
extreme phenomena in stellar coronae.Comment: 2 pages, 4 figures. To be included in the proceedings of the 'X-ray

HIV and Early Life Stress on Neuroimaging and Risky Behavior
This study examined the interactive effects of early life stress (ELS) and HIV on brain morphometry, diffusion-basis-spectrum-imaging (DBSI), risky decision-making, and sex-risk behavior. 122 people with HIV (PWH) and 113 people without HIV (PWoH), free of major psychiatric illness and neurological confounds, were stratified into high (≥ 3 events) vs. low (\u3c 3 events) ELS [PWoH/low ELS (n = 57), PWoH/high ELS (n =56), PWH/low ELS (n = 43), PWH/high ELS (n = 79)] and underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging, DBSI, neuropsychological, and risky-behavior assessment; all PWH were virologically controlled. Compared to PWoH, PWH had smaller orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), parietal lobes, insula, caudate and anterior cingulate. No ELS effects were detected in volumetric measures. Significant interactions were found between HIV serostatus and ELS on the OFC and on cellularity of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus after multiple comparisons adjustment. Specifically, PWH/high ELS exhibited significantly smaller OFC and PWoH/high ELS show significantly larger OFC than the other groups. PWoH/high ELS exhibited higher DBSI cellularity (neuroinflammation proxy) of the inferior-occipital-fasciculus compared to PWoH/high ELS. Regardless of HIV status, executive function moderated the relationship between the OFC and sex-risk behavior such that individuals within the sample who performed above average on a measure of executive function and had a larger OFC reported fewer sex partners in past six months than individuals with smaller volumes. No interaction was found between HIV serostatus and ELS on risky behavior measures. Clustering analyses defined ELS subgroups in PWH that were determined by demographic characteristics, duration of infection, recent CD4+ T-cell count, nadir CD4+ T-cell count and high/low ELS.Even in PWH that are virologically controlled, without major current psychiatric comorbidities, there is evidence of a synergistic impact of ELS and HIV on OFC volumes. Higher volumes in the OFC were detrimental when associated with lower executive function scores or advantageous when associated with higher executive function. Findings suggest that ELS is associated with different brain signatures among PWoH and virally suppressed PWH. However, ELS was not directly associated with risky behaviors, and subgroups in PWH were characterized by demographic variables, past substance use and HIV clinical variables

Farmers' Demand for Information about Agribusiness
This study is focused on the habits of the Brazilian farmers that access the Internet for searching information to their economical activities. The main goal is to understand how come those agents of the agribusiness use the formal and informal (personal contact) means of communication, as well as the functions that each of those means accomplish to this public. In other words, it intends to identify the channels of communication of major importance to farmers (used more often, considered the ones of more credibility and preferred among them). That is possible by means of a questionnaire sent exclusively by e-mail, answered by Brazilian farmers. The motivation of the study is to contribute to make the communication more efficient to those who work on farms. That can produce benefits to the communication companies and to the public. The results show that the Internet is the mean of communication more often used and preferred on the process of searching information about the agribusiness among Brazilian farmers. The personal contact, not considered in the valuation about preference, appears in second position in the ranking for intensity of use. On the other hand, the radio, regional press newspapers and newsletters of class entities were the less consulted and the last ones in the ranking of preference.Agribusiness, Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,

Development of teaching competencies through the professional teaching practice
This research reports the findings of a systematization of experiences whose main purpose was to identify the competencies developed by student teachers during their professional teaching practice. In 2014, students from the Bachelor Program in English Language Teaching at Uniminuto University worked as student teachers in Luigi Pirandello and Instituto Técnico Distrital Republica de Guatemala Schools where they had to deal with different situations in the classroom. Teaching journals, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires, were used as data collection instruments. Findings suggest that context (public or private) is a determining factor when it comes to the development of teaching competencies
