    Real-time phase-shift detection of the surface plasmon resonance

    We investigate a method to directly measure the phase of a laser beam reflected from a metallic film after excitation of surface plasmon polaritons. This method permits real time access to the phase information, it increases the possible speed of data acquisition, and it may thus prove useful for increasing the sensitivity of surface plasmon based sensors

    Se presenta la primera aproximación global al conocimiento e interpretación de los pastizales terofíticos no nitrófilos murciano-almerienses, realizada desde la óptica de la fitosociología integrada. El análisis se llevó a cabo con 190 inventarios fitosociológicos, utilizando métodos de ordenación clásicos y multivariantes (análisis de correspondencias), así como una profunda revisión bibliográfica. Se han reconocido 25 comunidades o asociaciones vegetales pertenecientes a las clases Helianthemetea guttati (18), Saginetea maritimae (3), Thero-Salicornietea (3) e Isoeto-Nanojuncetea (1). Se proponen como nuevas las cinco asociaciones que se recogen en el resumen en inglés.The present paper is the first approach to the global synthesis of the murciano-almerian, non nitrophilous therophytic grassland, belonging to the classes Helianthemetea guttati, Saginetea maritimae, Thero-Salicornietea and lsoeto-Nanojuncetea. These communities have been studied according to the methodology of the Integrated Phytosociology. Tables have been ordered by means of the manual method and also multivariate analysis (Correspondence Analysis). 25 plant communities have been recognized, the following are proposed as new associations: Stipo capensis-Diplota.xidetum lagascanae, Plantagini ovatae-Diplotaxidetum ilorcitanae, Leysero leyseroidis-Rumicetum gallici, Campanulo fastigiatae-Chaenorhinetum rupestris and Polypogoni maritimi-Teucrietum campanulati

    Protein Translation Inhibition is Involved in the Activity of the Pan-PIM Kinase Inhibitor PIM447 in Combination with Pomalidomide-Dexamethasone in Multiple Myeloma

    Background: Proviral Insertion site for Moloney murine leukemia virus (PIM) kinases are overexpressed in hematologic malignancies, including multiple myeloma. Previous preclinical data from our group demonstrated the anti-myeloma effect of the pan-PIM kinase inhibitor PIM447. Methods: Based on those data, we evaluate here, by in vitro and in vivo studies, the activity of the triple combination of PIM447 + pomalidomide + dexamethasone (PIM-Pd) in multiple myeloma. Results: Our results show that the PIM-Pd combination exerts a potent anti-myeloma effect in vitro and in vivo, where it markedly delays tumor growth and prolongs survival of treated mice. Mechanism of action studies performed in vitro and on mice tumor samples suggest that the combination PIM-Pd inhibits protein translation processes through the convergent inhibition of c-Myc and mTORC1, which subsequently disrupts the function of eIF4E. Interestingly the MM pro-survival factor IRF4 is also downregulated after PIM-Pd treatment. As a whole, all these molecular changes would promote cell cycle arrest and deregulation of metabolic pathways, including glycolysis and lipid biosynthesis, leading to inhibition of myeloma cell proliferation.     Stroma-Mediated Resistance to S63845 and Venetoclax through MCL-1 and BCL-2 Expression Changes Induced by miR-193b-3p and miR-21-5p Dysregulation in Multiple Myeloma.

    BH3-mimetics targeting anti-apoptotic proteins such as MCL-1 (S63845) or BCL-2 (venetoclax) are currently being evaluated as effective therapies for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM). Interleukin 6, produced by mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), has been shown to modify the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins and their interaction with the pro-apoptotic BIM protein in MM cells. In this study, we assess the efficacy of S63845 and venetoclax in MM cells in direct co-culture with MSCs derived from MM patients (pMSCs) to identify additional mechanisms involved in the stroma-induced resistance to these agents. MicroRNAs miR-193b-3p and miR-21-5p emerged among the top deregulated miRNAs in myeloma cells when directly co-cultured with pMSCs, and we show their contribution to changes in MCL-1 and BCL-2 protein expression and in the activity of S63845 and venetoclax. Additionally, direct contact with pMSCs under S63845 and/or venetoclax treatment modifies myeloma cell dependence on different BCL-2 family anti-apoptotic proteins in relation to BIM, making myeloma cells more dependent on the non-targeted anti-apoptotic protein or BCL-XL. Finally, we show a potent effect of the combination of S63845 and venetoclax even in the presence of pMSCs, which supports this combinatorial approach for the treatment of MM

    Non-motor symptom burden in patients with Parkinson's disease with impulse control disorders and compulsive behaviours: results from the COPPADIS cohort.

    The study was aimed at analysing the frequency of impulse control disorders (ICDs) and compulsive behaviours (CBs) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and in control subjects (CS) as well as the relationship between ICDs/CBs and motor, nonmotor features and dopaminergic treatment in PD patients. Data came from COPPADIS-2015, an observational, descriptive, nationwide (Spain) study. We used the validated Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease-Rating Scale (QUIP-RS) for ICD/CB screening. The association between demographic data and ICDs/CBs was analyzed in both groups. In PD, this relationship was evaluated using clinical features and treatment-related data. As result, 613 PD patients (mean age 62.47 ± 9.09 years, 59.87% men) and 179 CS (mean age 60.84 ± 8.33 years, 47.48% men) were included. ICDs and CBs were more frequent in PD (ICDs 12.7% vs. 1.6%, p < 0.001; CBs 7.18% vs. 1.67%, p = 0.01). PD patients had more frequent previous ICDs history, premorbid impulsive personality and antidepressant treatment (p < 0.05) compared with CS. In PD, patients with ICDs/CBs presented younger age at disease onset, more frequent history of previous ICDs and premorbid personality (p < 0.05), as well as higher comorbidity with nonmotor symptoms, including depression and poor quality of life. Treatment with dopamine agonists increased the risk of ICDs/CBs, being dose dependent (p < 0.05). As conclusions, ICDs and CBs were more frequent in patients with PD than in CS. More nonmotor symptoms were present in patients with PD who had ICDs/CBs compared with those without. Dopamine agonists have a prominent effect on ICDs/CBs, which could be influenced by dose

    Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (M-WCST): Normative data for Spanish-speaking pediatric population

    OBJECTIVE: To generate normative data for the Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (M-WCST) in Spanish-speaking pediatric populations. METHOD: The sample consisted of 4,373 healthy children from nine countries in Latin America (Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Puerto Rico) and Spain. Each participant was administered the M-WCST as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. Number of categories, perseverative errors, and total error scores were normed using multiple linear regressions and standard deviations of residual values. Age, age2, sex, and mean level of parental education (MLPE) were included as predictors in the analyses. RESULTS: The final multiple linear regression models indicated main effects for age on all scores, such that the number of categories correct increased and total number of perseverative errors and total number of errors decrease linearly as a function of age. Age2 had a significant effect in Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, and Spain for numbers of categories; a significant effect for number of perseverative errors in Chile, Cuba, Mexico, and Spain; and a significant effect for number of total errors in Chile, Cuba, Peru, and Spain. Models showed an effect for MLPE in Cuba (total errors), Ecuador (categories and total errors), Mexico (all scores), Paraguay (perseverative errors and total error), and Spain (categories and total errors). Sex affected number of total errors for Ecuador. CONCLUSIONS: This is the largest Spanish-speaking pediatric normative study in the world, and it will allow neuropsychologists from these countries to have a more accurate way to interpret the M-WCST with pediatric populations
