Characterization of beet necrotic yellow vein furovirus from Spanish sugar beets

Rhizomania is a viral disease, caused by beet necrotic yellow vein furovirus (BNYVV), which was detected in Spanish sugar beets in 1988, it being focused on the Castilla y León region. BNYVV has five RNA fragments with specific functions, and the different composition and proportion of RNA in the virions allow their separation and the characterization of their activities during the development of the disease. Thirty–six samples of sugar beet rootlets and frozen pulps from three different sugar beet zones of Castilla y León were analyzed by DAS-ELISA and Immunocapture-Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (IC-RT-PCR) using specific primers. The identity of the cDNA products was confirmed by nested- PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). The uniformity of the patterns obtained by RFLP analyses with nine endonucleases showed the existence of a unique strain of BNYVV in 80,000 Ha of crop surface which could be explained by a recent arrival of the rhizomania disease to this region. The isolates studied were more similar to type A, which has been previously described in BNYVV, but a nonexpected cleavage site for this molecular group was observed with endonuclease Hinc II on the RNA-2 IC-RT-PCR product (nt 2133–3293) in the thirty–six Spanish samples and also in a North American strain taken as reference. The use of frozen pulps obtained as a previous step to the industrial extraction of sugar avoids problems due to erratic distribution of the virus in the roots, provides repetitive results for a particular sample, and facilitates epidemiological and distributional studies on rhizomania disease

Sorbent design for CO2 capture under different flue gas conditions

CO2 capture by solid sorbents is a physisorption process in which the gas molecules are adsorbed in a different porosity range, depending on the temperature and pressure of the capture conditions. Accordingly, CO2 capture capacities can be enhanced if the sorbent has a proper porosity development and a suitable pore size distribution. Thus, the main objective of this work is to maximize the CO2 capture capacity at ambient temperature, elucidating which is the most suitable porosity that the adsorbent has to have as a function of the emission source conditions. In order to do so, different activated carbons have been selected and their CO2 capture capacities have been measured. The obtained results show that for low CO2 pressures (e.g., conditions similar to post-combustion processes) the sorbent should have the maximum possible volume of micropores smaller than 0.7 nm. However, the sorbent requires the maximum possible total micropore volume when the capture is performed at high pressures (e.g., conditions similar to oxy-combustion or pre-combustion processes). Finally, this study also analyzes the important influence that the sorbent density has on the CO2 capture capacity, since the adsorbent will be confined in a bed with a restricted volume. The authors thank the Generalitat Valenciana and FEDER (project PROMETEO/2009/047) for financial support

Systematic pseudopotentials from reference eigenvalue sets for DFT calculations

    Get PDF
Under a Creative Commons license.-- et al.Pseudopotential-based Density-Functional Theory (DFT) permits the calculation of material properties with a modest computational effort, besides an acknowledged tradeoff of generating and testing pseudopotentials that reproduce established benchmark structural and electronic properties. To facilitate the needed benchmarking process, here we present a pragmatic method to optimize pseudopotentials for arbitrary materials directly from eigenvalue sets consistent with all-electron results. This method thus represents a much needed pragmatic route for the creation and assessment of sensitive pseudopotentials for DFT calculations that has been exemplified within the context of the SIESTA code. Comprehensive optimized pseudopotentials, basis sets, and lattice parameters are provided for twenty chemical elements in the bulk, and for both LDA and GGA exchange–correlation potentials. This method helps addressing the following issues: (i) the electronic dispersion and structural properties for Ge, Pd, Pt, Au, Ag, and Ta better agree with respect to all-electron results now, (ii) we provide the expected metallic behavior of Sn in the bulk – which comes out semiconducting when using available pseudopotentials, (iii) we create a validated pseudopotential for LDA-tungsten, and (iv) we create the first Bi pseudopotential for SIESTA that reproduces well-known electron and hole pockets at the L and T points. We investigated the transferability of these pseudopotentials and basis sets, and predict a new phase for two-dimensional tin as well.P.R. and S.B.L. acknowledge partial support from the Arkansas Biosciences Institute. Current trends on the early diagnosis of Alzheimer\u27s Disease by means of neural computation methods

    Get PDF
The prevalence of dementia is expected to increment in the next decades as the elderly population grows and ages. Hence, Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), as the most frequent dementia, will be more problematic from a socioeconomic point of view. Different diagnostic criteria have been proposed by clinicians for the early diagnosis of AD. After discarding the longitudinal and prognosis articles, a selection of articles from the last decade and based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) was collated from the PubMed database, and complemented with researches extracted from others. The latest trends on this field were discovered in these selected articles, which were later discussed. Only articles based whether on shallow ANNs, Deep Learning (DL) or a mix of both were included. The total number of cross-sectional articles that complied with our selection criteria was 154. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) combined with neuroimaging has been the most popular approach, yielding very good performance results. Approaches based on non- neuroimaging techniques, such as gait, genetics, speech and neuropsychological tests, were less common but have their own advantages. Multimodality solutions may become even more prevalent in the near future. Similarly, novel diagnostic criteria will appear and the popularity of currently not-so-common ones will expand. A new proposal emerged from these trends, which is based on ontogenetic ANNs
