On the relation between the IR continuum and the active galactic nucleus in Seyfert galaxies
A sample of the brightest known Seyfert galaxies from the CfA sample is
analyzed on the basis of ISO photometric and spectroscopic data.
Regardless of the Seyfert type, the mid-IR continuum emission from these
galaxies is found to be correlated with the coronal line emission arising in
the nuclear active region. Conversely, the correlation degrades progressively
when moving from the mid- to the far-IR emission, where it ends to vanish. It
is concluded that the mid-IR emission is largely dominated by dust heated by
processes associated with the active nucleus whereas the far-IR is a different
component most probably unrelated with the active region. We suggest that the
far-IR component is due to dust heated by the stellar population in the disks

Cosmological Bianchi Class A models in S\'aez-Ballester theory
We use the S\'aez-Ballester (SB) theory on anisotropic Bianchi Class A
cosmological model, with barotropic fluid and cosmological constant, using the
Hamilton or Hamilton-Jacobi approach. Contrary to claims in the specialized
literature, it is shown that the S\'aez-Ballester theory cannot provide a
realistic solution to the dark matter problem of Cosmology for the dust epoch,
without a fine tunning because the contribution of the scalar field in this
theory is equivalent to a stiff fluid (as can be seen from the energy--momentum
tensor for the scalar field), that evolves in a different way as the dust
component. To have similar contributions of the scalar component and the dust
component implies that their past values were fine tunned. So, we
reinterpreting this null result as an indication that dark matter plays a
central role in the formation of structures and galaxy evolution, having
measureable effects in the cosmic microwave bound radiation, and than this
formalism yield to this epoch as primigenius results. We do the mention that
this formalism was used recently in the so called K-essence theory applied to
dark energy problem, in place to the dark matter problem. Also, we include a
quantization procedure of the theory which can be simplified by reinterpreting
the theory in the Einstein frame, where the scalar field can be interpreted as
part of the matter content of the theory, and exact solutions to the
Wheeler-DeWitt equation are found, employing the Bianchi Class A cosmological

Managing Waiting Times to Predict No-shows and Cancelations at a Children’s Hospital
Purpose: Since long waits in hospitals have been found to be related to high rates of no-shows and cancelations, managing waiting times should be considered as an important tool that hospitals can use to reduce missed appointments. The aim of this study is to analyze patients’ behavior in order to predict no-show and cancelation rates correlated to waiting times.
Design/methodology/approach: This study is based on the data from a US children’s hospital, which includes all the appointments registered during one year of observation. We used the call-appointment interval to establish the wait time to get an appointment. Four different types of appointment-keeping behavior and two types of patients were distinguished: arrival, no-show, cancelation with no reschedule, and cancelation with reschedule; and new and established patients.
Findings: Results confirmed a strong impact of long waiting times on patients’ appointment-keeping behavior, and the logarithmic regression was found as the best-fit function for the correlation between variables in all cases. The correlation analysis showed that new patients tend to miss appointments more often than established patients when the waiting time increases. It was also found that, depending on the patients’ appointment distribution, it might get more complicated for hospitals to reduce missed appointments as the waiting time is reduced.
Originality/value: The methodology applied in our study, which combines the use of regression analysis and patients’ appointment distribution analysis, would help health care managers to understand the initial implications of long waiting times and to address improvement related to patient satisfaction and hospital performance.Peer Reviewe
Integral Field Spectroscopy based H\alpha\ sizes of local Luminous and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies. A Direct Comparison with high-z Massive Star Forming Galaxies
Aims. We study the analogy between local U/LIRGs and high-z massive SFGs by
comparing basic H{\alpha} structural characteristics, such as size, and
luminosity (and SFR) surface density, in an homogeneous way (i.e. same tracer
and size definition, similar physical scales). Methods. We use Integral Field
Spectroscopy based H{\alpha} emission maps for a representative sample of 54
local U/LIRGs (66 galaxies). From this initial sample we select 26 objects with
H{\alpha} luminosities (L(H{\alpha})) similar to those of massive (i.e. M\ast
\sim 10^10 M\odot or larger) SFGs at z \sim 2, and observed on similar physical
scales. Results. The sizes of the H{\alpha} emitting region in the sample of
local U/LIRGs span a large range, with r1/2(H{\alpha}) from 0.2 to 7 kpc.
However, about 2/3 of local U/LIRGs with Lir > 10^11.4 L\odot have compact
H{\alpha} emission (i.e. r1/2 < 2 kpc). The comparison sample of local U/LIRGs
also shows a higher fraction (59%) of objects with compact H{\alpha} emission
than the high-z sample (25%). This gives further support to the idea that for
this luminosity range the size of the star forming region is a distinctive
factor between local and distant galaxies of similar SF rates. However, when
using H{\alpha} as a tracer for both local and high-z samples, the differences
are smaller than the ones recently reported using a variety of other tracers.
Despite of the higher fraction of galaxies with compact H{\alpha} emission, a
sizable group (\sim 1/3) of local U/LIRGs are large (i.e. r1/2 > 2 kpc). These
are systems showing pre-coalescence merger activity and they are
indistinguishable from the massive high-z SFGs galaxies in terms of their
H{\alpha} sizes, and luminosity and SFR surface densities.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. (!5 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables
Implications of plant material origin, land use history and soil properties in the incidence of verticillium wilt in olive groves

dahliae Kleb.) in olive groves is often related to the
use of infected propagation material and to the planting
of new olive trees in contaminated soils. This study assessed
the implications of plant propagation, land-use
history and soil properties on disease prevalence in
southern Spain, the most important olive-growing area
worldwide. To this purpose, a large-scale sampling survey
was carried out in this area, V. dahliae pathotypes
were identified by PCR, and GIS was used to analyze
soil properties and cropland-use history. Finally, multiple
correspondence analysis was performed to show the
statistical association between the variables taken into
account. Results strongly indicated the potential risk of
planting olive in valleys with irrigated cropland history,
especially those that had hosted herbaceous crops, highlighted
the importance of using pathogen-free certified
planting material as a key component for a successful
disease management, and confirmed the role played by
saline, alkaline, and steep-slope soils in enhancing V.
