    Non-Adiabatic Spin Transfer Torque in Real Materials

    The motion of simple domain walls and of more complex magnetic textures in the presence of a transport current is described by the Landau-Lifshitz-Slonczewski (LLS) equations. Predictions of the LLS equations depend sensitively on the ratio between the dimensionless material parameter β\beta which characterizes non-adiabatic spin-transfer torques and the Gilbert damping parameter α\alpha. This ratio has been variously estimated to be close to 0, close to 1, and large compared to 1. By identifying β\beta as the influence of a transport current on α\alpha, we derive a concise, explicit and relatively simple expression which relates β\beta to the band structure and Bloch state lifetimes of a magnetic metal. Using this expression we demonstrate that intrinsic spin-orbit interactions lead to intra-band contributions to β\beta which are often dominant and can be (i) estimated with some confidence and (ii) interpreted using the "breathing Fermi surface" model.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures; submitted to Phys.     Gilbert Damping in Conducting Ferromagnets II: Model Tests of the Torque-Correlation Formula

    We report on a study of Gilbert damping due to particle-hole pair excitations in conducting ferromagnets. We focus on a toy two-band model and on a four-band spherical model which provides an approximate description of ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As. These models are sufficiently simple that disorder-ladder-sum vertex corrections to the long-wavelength spin-spin response function can be summed to all orders. An important objective of this study is to assess the reliability of practical approximate expressions which can be combined with electronic structure calculations to estimate Gilbert damping in more complex systems.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures.     Se presentan los materiales procedentes de un nuevo yacimiento al aire libre localizado en la costa de Bizkaia. Éste fue localizado como resultado de unas obras de saneamiento por lo que los materiales recuperados están desprovistos de un contexto arqueológico preciso. Aun así un análisis tecnológico y tipológico ha permitido valorar la unidad del conjunto proponiendo la adscripción del grueso del material al Chatelperroniense. Este hallazgo abre nuevas posibilidades para el conocimiento sobre este periodo en la región Cantábrica ya que supondría la primera evidencia de un hábitat al aire libre semejante a los excavados en torno a Bayona

    Reprocessing of Soft X-ray Emission Lines in Black Hole Accretion Disks

    By means of a Monte Carlo code that accounts for Compton scattering and photoabsorption followed by recombination, we have investigated the radiation transfer of Ly alpha, He alpha, and recombination continua photons of H- and He-like C, N, O, and Ne produced in the photoionized atmosphere of a relativistic black hole accretion disk. We find that photoelectric opacity causes significant attenuation of photons with energies above the O VIII K-edge; that the conversion efficiencies of these photons into lower-energy lines and recombination continua are high; and that accounting for this reprocessing significantly (by factors of 21% to 105%) increases the flux of the Ly alpha and He alpha emission lines of H- and He-like C and O escaping the disk atmosphere.Comment: 4 pages including 4 encapsulated postscript figures; LaTeX format, uses aastex.cls and emulateapj5.sty; accepted on 2004 January 13 for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Dynamical Ne K Edge and Line Variations in the X-Ray Spectrum of the Ultra-compact Binary 4U 0614+091

    We observed the ultra-compact binary candidate 4U 0614+091 for a total of 200 ksec with the high-energy transmission gratings onboard the \chandra X-ray Observatory. The source is found at various intensity levels with spectral variations present. X-ray luminosities vary between 2.0×1036\times10^{36} \ergsec and 3.5×1036\times10^{36} \ergsec. Continuum variations are present at all times and spectra can be well fit with a powerlaw component, a high kT blackbody component, and a broad line component near oxygen. The spectra require adjustments to the Ne K edge and in some occasions also to the Mg K edge. The Ne K edge appears variable in terms of optical depths and morphology. The edge reveals average blue- and red-shifted values implying Doppler velocities of the order of 3500 \kms. The data show that Ne K exhibits excess column densities of up to several 1018^{18} cm2^{-2}. The variability proves that the excess is intrinsic to the source. The correponding disk velocities also imply an outer disk radius of the order of <109< 10^9 cm consistent with an ultra-compact binary nature. We also detect a prominent soft emission line complex near the \oviii Lα\alpha position which appears extremely broad and relativistic effects from near the innermost disk have to be included. Gravitationally broadened line fits also provide nearly edge-on angles of inclination between 86 and 89^{\circ}. The emissions appear consistent with an ionized disk with ionization parameters of the order of 104^4 at radii of a few 107^7 cm. The line wavelengths with respect to \oviiia\ are found variably blue-shifted indicating more complex inner disk dynamics.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astrophyscial Main Journa

    Interplay between Symmetric Exchange Anisotropy, Uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Magnetic Fields in the Phase Diagram of Quantum Magnets and Superconductors

    We theoretically study the joint influence of uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, symmetric exchange anisotropy (with its axis parallel to the DM vector) and arbitrarily oriented magnetic fields on one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnets. We show that the zero-temperature phase diagram contains three competing phases: (i) an antiferromagnet with Neel vector in the plane spanned by the DM vector and the magnetic field, (ii) a {\em dimerized} antiferromagnet with Neel vector perpendicular to both the DM vector and the magnetic field, and (iii) a gapless Luttinger liquid. Phase (i) is destroyed by a small magnetic field component along the DM vector and is furthermore unstable beyond a critical value of easy-plane anisotropy, which we estimate using Abelian and non-Abelian bosonization along with perturbative renormalization group. We propose a mathematical equivalent of the spin model in a one-dimensional Josephson junction (JJ) array located in proximity to a bulk superconductor. We discuss the analogues of the magnetic phases in the superconducting context and comment on their experimental viability.Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Identification of an Extended Accretion Disk Corona in the Hercules X-1 Low State: Moderate Optical Depth, Precise Density Determination, and Verification of CNO Abundances

    We identify an accretion disk atmosphere and corona from the high resolution X-ray spectrum of Hercules X-1, and we determine its detailed physical properties. More than two dozen recombination emission lines (from Fe XXVI at 1.78 A to N VI at 29.08 A) and Fe K-alpha, K-beta fluorescence lines were detected in a 50 ks observation with the Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS). They allow us to measure the density, temperature, spatial distribution, elemental composition, and kinematics of the plasma. We exclude HZ Her as the source of the recombination emission. We compare accretion disk model atmospheres with the observed spectrum in order to constrain the stratification of density and ionization, disk atmosphere area, elemental composition, and energetics. The atmospheric spectrum observed during the low state is photoionized by the main-on X-ray continuum, indicating that the disk is observed edge-on during the low state. We infer the mean number of scatterings N of Ly-alpha and Ly-beta line photons from H-like ions. We derive N < 69 for O VIII Ly_alpha_1, which rules out the presence of a mechanism modeled by Sako (2003) to enhance N VII emission via a line overlap with O VIII. The line optical depth diagnostics are consistent with a flattened atmosphere. Our spectral analysis, the disk atmosphere model, and the presence of intense N VII and N VI lines (plus N V in the UV), confirm the over-abundance of nitrogen relative to other metals, which was shown to be indicative of CNO cycle processing in a massive progenitor.Comment: 38 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    A new approach to the inverse-scattering technique of Alekseev is presented which permits real-pole soliton solutions of the Ernst equations to be considered. This is achieved by adopting distinct real poles in the scattering matrix and its inverse. For the case in which the electromagnetic field vanishes, some explicit solutions are given using a Minkowski seed metric. The relation with the corresponding soliton solutions that can be constructed using the Belinskii-Zakharov inverse-scattering technique is determined.Comment: 8 pages, LaTe

    Solution of the 3D-Helmholtz equation in exterior domains using spherical harmonic decomposition

    AbstractThis work is devoted to a finite element formulation for the Helmholtz equation in exterior domains. The proposed formulation uses a separation of variables, combining a 2D FE discretization on an intermediate spherical boundary and an ‘a priori’ analytical pattern for the radial direction. Using the analytical radial pattern and the series expansion of trial and test functions in terms of spherical harmonics, an efficient semi-analytical technique is obtained for the direct calculation of the global FE matrices. The accuracy and reliability of the formulation are illustrated through numerical examples of radiation and scattering in the exterior domain
