Nucleation Induced Undulative Instability in Thin Films of nCB Liquid Crystals
A surface instability is reported in thin nematic films of 5CB and 8CB,
occurring near the nematic--isotropic phase transition.
Although this instability leads to patterns reminiscent of spinodal
dewetting, we show that it is actually based on a nucleation mechanism. Its
characteristic wavelength does not depend markedly on film thickness, but
strongly on the heating rate.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Spin Susceptibility of the Topological Superconductor UPt3 from Polarized Neutron Diffraction
Experiment and theory indicate that UPt3 is a topological superconductor in
an odd-parity state, based in part from temperature independence of the NMR
Knight shift. However, quasiparticle spin-flip scattering near a surface, where
the Knight shift is measured, might be responsible. We use polarized neutron
scattering to measure the bulk susceptibility with H||c, finding consistency
with the Knight shift but inconsistent with theory for this field orientation.
We infer that neither spin susceptibility nor Knight shift are a reliable
indication of odd-parity
Beyond evidence-based practice: rethinking the relationship between research, theory and practice

⢠The history of the evidence-based practice movement.
⢠Problems with the scientist practitioner model
⢠Alternative conceptualisations of the link between research evidence and practice.
⢠Some of the problems with randomised controlled research trials.
⢠The social context of research.
⢠The need for a different approach, focusing on the views of participants and utilising a broader range of research methods

Polynomial rings of the chiral models
Via explicit diagonalization of the chiral fusion matrices, we
discuss the possibility of representing the fusion ring of the chiral SU(N)
models, at level K=2, by a polynomial ring in a single variable when is odd
and by a polynomial ring in two variables when is even.Comment: 10 pages, LaTex (ioplppt.sty
Automorphism Modular Invariants of Current Algebras
We consider those two-dimensional rational conformal field theories (RCFTs)
whose chiral algebras, when maximally extended, are isomorphic to the current
algebra formed from some affine non-twisted Kac--Moody algebra at fixed level.
In this case the partition function is specified by an automorphism of the
fusion ring and corresponding symmetry of the Kac--Peterson modular matrices.
We classify all such partition functions when the underlying finite-dimensional
Lie algebra is simple. This gives all possible spectra for this class of RCFTs.
While accomplishing this, we also find the primary fields with second smallest
quantum dimension.Comment: 32 pages, plain Te
Branes in the plane wave background with gauge field condensates
Supersymmetric branes in the plane wave background with additional constant
magnetic fields are studied from the world-sheet point of view. It is found
that in contradistinction to flat space, boundary condensates on some maximally
supersymmetric branes necessarily break at least some supersymmetries. The
maximally supersymmetric cases with condensates are shown to be in one to one
correspondence with the previously classified class II branes.Comment: LaTeX, 31 pages, no figures; v2: references added, some typos

On the complete classification of the unitary N=2 minimal superconformal field theories
Aiming at a complete classification of unitary N=2 minimal models (where the
assumption of space-time supersymmetry has been dropped), it is shown that each
modular invariant candidate of a partition function for such a theory is indeed
the partition function of a minimal model. A family of models constructed via
orbifoldings of either the diagonal model or of the space-time supersymmetric
exceptional models demonstrates that there exists a unitary N=2 minimal model
for every one of the allowed partition functions in the list obtained from
Gannon's work.
Kreuzer and Schellekens' conjecture that all simple current invariants can be
obtained as orbifolds of the diagonal model, even when the extra assumption of
higher-genus modular invariance is dropped, is confirmed in the case of the
unitary N=2 minimal models by simple counting arguments.Comment: 53 pages; Latex; minor changes in v2: intro expanded, references

rewritten for greater generality, section 3.3 review removed. To appear in
