Demand for 30/20 GHz satellite systems over the next two decades is projected. Topics include a profile of the communications market, switched, dedicated, and packet transmission modes, deferred and real-time traffic, quality and reliability considerations, the capacity of competing transmission media, and scenarios for the growth and development of 30/20 GHz satellite communications

Portuguese-Americans and Mental Health Treatment Client-Therapist Ethnic Match, Ethnic Identity, and Satisfaction with Treatment

Multicultural issues in psychotherapy have increasingly been recognized as important in the provision of mental health services to our diverse population. Issues such as beliefs about mental health, attitudes toward authority, and even world view affect how clients access and make use of psychotherapy. Cultural views are essential to how one sees the world, and consequently there is much debate about whether clients would benefit from having therapists from the same cultural background. Ethnic identity, or the degree to which a person holds to the beliefs of their culture of origin, consequently plays an important role in psychotherapy. The Portuguese culture is one that has limited areas of settlement, but that accounts for a significant portion of the population in certain areas. They are an understudied population in the literature on multicultural counseling. This study examined the relationships among the variables of client-therapist ethnic match, degree of ethnic identity, and level of satisfaction with therapy. Twenty-four Portuguese-Americans, aged 23 to 58, who were currently in psychotherapy completed questionnaires measuring ethnic identity and satisfaction with therapy. Satisfaction did not differ between those who had ethnically similar therapists and those who had non-Portuguese therapists. However, for those with ethnically matched therapists, satisfaction with therapy was significantly correlated with Portuguese ethnic identity. Clients with high ethnic identity were more satisfied with therapy than clients with low ethnic identity. Clients whose families had immigrated in more recent generations were confirmed to have a higher ethnic identity than those whose families had been in the United States for generations. There was a trend for clients to be more satisfied if their families were involved in therapy, although this was not statistically significant. Clinical implication of these findings and directions for future research are discussed

Customer premises services market demand assessment 1980 - 2000. Volume 1: Executive summary

    Get PDF
Estimates of market demand for domestic civilian telecommunications services for the years 1980 to 2000 are provided. Overall demand, demand or satellite services, demand for satellite delivered Customer Premises Service (CPS), and demand for 30/20 GHz Customer Premises Services are covered. Emphasis is placed on the CPS market and demand is segmented by market, by service, by user class and by geographic region. Prices for competing services are discussed and the distribution of traffic with respect to distance is estimated. A nationwide traffic distribution model for CPS in terms of demand for CPS traffic and earth stations for each of the major SMSAs in the United States are provided

Factors That Impact the Achievement Gap Between African American Male and Female Siblings

This study examined factors that impact the achievement gap between American male and African American female siblings. The researcher gathered data through interviews and academic artifacts consisting of Georgia\u27s writing test for grades 8th and 11th, the 8th grade Criteria Reference Competency Test results, and Georgia High School Graduation test requirements. Through this qualitative research, participants including : African American male and African American female siblings, African American parents, teachers, and administrators were able to explain personal experiences that impacted the academic success of African American males and African American female siblings. The African American male and African American female siblings, teachers, and administrators were all affiliated with a Southeastern Georgia high school during the 2008-2011 academic school years. Each participant was asked specific interview questions to determine their perspective on factors that impact the achievement gap between African American male and African American female siblings. Factors contributing to the achievement gap between African American male and African American female siblings consist of: (1) social environment, (2) family support, (3) parenting, (4) education, and (5) order of siblings. Data from the study also revealed five 2 themes such as: (1) parent expectation, (2) peer acceptance, (3) school culture. (4) family relationship, and (5) teacher/student relationship that impact the academic success of African American males. In short, African American male students\u27 academic success improved when they are understood, nurtured, and supported

The 30/20 GHz fixed communications systems service demand assessment. Volume 2: Main report

A forecast of demand for telecommunications services through the year 2000 is presented with particular reference to demand for satellite communications. Estimates of demand are provided for voice, video, and data services and for various subcategories of these services. The results are converted to a common digital measure in terms of terabits per year and aggregated to obtain total demand projections

The 30/20 GHz fixed communications systems service demand assessment. Volume 1: Executive summary

Demand for telecommunications services is forecasted for the period 1980-2000, with particular reference to that portion of the demand associated with satellite communications. Overall demand for telecommunications is predicted to increase by a factor of five over the period studied and the satellite portion of demand will increase even more rapidly. Traffic demand is separately estimated for voice, video, and data services and is also described as a function of distance traveled and city size. The satellite component of projected demand is compared with the capacity available in the C and Ku satellite bands and it is projected that new satellite technology and the implementation of Ka band transmission will be needed in the decade of the 1990's

A review of studies forecasting the communication market in the United States is given. The applicability of these forecasts to assessment of demand for the 30/20 GHz fixed communications system is analyzed. Costs for the 30/20 satellite trunking systems are presented and compared with the cost of terrestrial communications

Species Limits and Phylogeography of North American Cricket Frogs (Acris: Hylidae)

    Get PDF
Cricket frogs are widely distributed across the eastern United States and two species, the northern cricket frog (Acris crepitans) and the southern cricket frog (A. gryllus) are currently recognized. We generated a phylogenetic hypothesis for Acris using fragments of nuclear and mitochondrial genes in separate and combined phylogenetic analyses. We also used distance methods and fixation indices to evaluate species limits within the genus and the validity of currently recognized subspecies of A. crepitans. The distributions of existing A. crepitans subspecies, defined by morphology and call types, do not match the distributions of evolutionary lineages recovered using our genetic data. We discuss a scenario of call evolution to explain this disparity. We also recovered distinct phylogeographic groups within A. crepitans and A. gryllus that are congruent with other codistributed taxa. Under a lineage-based species concept, we recognize Acris blanchardi as a distinct species. The importance of this revised taxonomy is discussed in light of the dramatic declines in A. blanchardi across the northern and western portions of its range
