Potential of Spaceborne X & L-Band SAR-Data for Soil Moisture Mapping Using GIS and its Application to Hydrological Modelling: the Example of Gottleuba Catchment, Saxony / Germany
Hydrological modelling is a powerful tool for hydrologists and engineers involved in the planning and development of integrated approach for the management of water resources. With the recent advent of computational power and the growing availability of spatial data, RS and GIS technologies can augment to a great extent the conventional methods used in rainfall runoff studies; it is possible to accurately describe watershed characteristics in particularly when determining runoff response to rainfall input. The main objective of this study is to apply the potential of spaceborne SAR data for soil moisture retrieval in order to improve the spatial input parameters required for hydrological modelling. For the spatial database creation, high resolution 2 m aerial laser scanning Digital Terrain Model (DTM), soil map, and landuse map were used. Rainfall records were transformed into a runoff through hydrological parameterisation of the watershed and the river network using HEC-HMS software for rainfall runoff simulation. The Soil Conservation Services Curve Number (SCS-CN) and Soil Moisture Accounting (SMA) loss methods were selected to calculate the infiltration losses. In microwave remote sensing, the study of how the microwave interacts with the earth terrain has always been interesting in interpreting the satellite SAR images. In this research soil moisture was derived from two different types of Spaceborne SAR data; TerraSAR-X and ALOS PALSAR (L band). The developed integrated hydrological model was applied to the test site of the Gottleuba Catchment area which covers approximately 400 sqkm, located south of Pirna (Saxony, Germany). To validate the model historical precipitation data of the past ten years were performed. The validated model was further optimized using the extracted soil moisture from SAR data. The simulation results showed a reasonable match between the simulated and the observed hydrographs. Quantitatively the study concluded that based on SAR data, the model could be used as an expeditious tool of soil moisture mapping which required for hydrological modelling
The cultural context in the translation of young people’s literature: the adaptation of Naguib Mahfuz’s Tales for telling
En este artículo, se defiende la importancia que tiene el contexto cultural en la traducción de la literatura infantil y juvenil (LIJ). El estudio analiza, desde un punto de vista comparativo-contrastivo, la adaptación infantojuvenil Cuentos para contar, realizada en español a partir del original árabe para adultos ح كاٌات حار تنا (Hikayat haratina), del Nobel egipcio Naguib Mahfuz, pero con la mediación de una traducción anterior al español igualmente para adultos: Historias de nuestro barrio. Para la clasificación y análisis de los marcadores culturales, seguimos el método de Gisela Marcelo Wirnitzer (2007), aunque adaptándolo a las características de la obra analizada. Se hace especial hincapié en el contexto cultural del árabe y en cómo se ha trasladado a la adaptación española. El objetivo último de este trabajo es mostrar la ambigüedad que se ha producido a veces en la adaptación, destinada a lectores adolescentes españoles, por un tratamiento poco adecuado de los marcadores culturales.In this paper, I uphold the importance of the cultural context in the translation of Children‟s Literature. From a comparative-contrastive point of view, I study the children‟s adaptation –Cuentos para contar– translated to Spanish from the Arabic adult‟s original work حكاٌات حارتنا (Hikayat haratina), written by the Egyptian Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz, but carried out through the mediation of a previous translation to Spanish also carried out for adults – Historias de nuestro barrio–. For the classification and analysis of cultural markers, I chose to follow Gisela Marcelo Wirnitzer‟s Methodology (2007), though adapting it according to the analyzed work‟s characteristics. This study puts special emphasis on the cultural context of the Arabic original work and how it was transferred to the Spanish adaptation. My ultimate aim here is to highlight the ambiguity which has occurred sometimes in the adapted work, bound for Spanish young-adult readers, through a not-so-adequate treatment of the cultural markers
Root extracts of Saussurea costus as prospective detoxifying food additive against sodium nitrite toxicity in male rats

methanol, and water) as a food additive in alleviating the harmful effect of sodium nitrite in rat meals. Thirty-five
adult male rats were divided into five groups as follows: control, sodium nitrite (NaNO2; 75 mg/kg BW, single
oral dose), S. costus 70% ethanol, 70% methanol, and aqueous extracts (300 mg/kg BW), respectively for four
weeks followed by a single dose of NaNO2 24h before decapitation. Results showed that the 70% ethanol extract
of S. costus has a higher concentration of total phenolic content, total flavonoids, and antioxidant effect than the
70% methanol and water extracts. Rats pretreated with S. costus extracts reduced the harmful effects induced by
NaNO2 and improved the hematological parameters, liver, and kidney function biomarkers as well as lipid profile
as compared to the NaNO2 group. Furthermore, S. costus improved the histopathological alterations in the liver
and kidney induced by NaNO2 and improved meat sensory evaluation. Conclusively, the 70% ethanol extract of
S. costus roots is the most effective extract as an antioxidant against the toxicity of sodium nitrite in male rats and
might be used safely as a natural additive in the food industry
Dynamics of laser-bumped electron–hole semiconductor plasma
Electron–hole pairs in semiconductors can be stimulated by a laser beam with energy larger than the energy gap of the semiconductor. The interaction between an electron–hole plasma with a laser beam can be a source of instability. The dependence of the instability on the electron and hole temperatures and the unperturbed potential of the incident laser are examined. Using Maxwell’s equations along with electron–hole fluid equations, an evolution equation describing the system is obtained. The latter is reduced to an energy equation that characterizes localized pulse propagation
Hepatitis C virus infection and global kidney health: the consensus proceedings of the International Federation of Kidney Foundations
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important cause of major morbidities including chronic liver disease, liver cancer, acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Among patients with kidney disease who have HCV infection, the clinical outcomes are worse. The prevalence of HCV infection is exceptionally high among dialysis and kidney transplant patients throughout the globe. It is estimated that 5% to 25% or more of dialysis-dependent patients are affected. Almost half of all deaths in CKD patients, including HCV-infected patients, are due to cardiovascular disease, and HCV-infected patients have higher mortality. Given the importance and impact of the HCV epidemic on global kidney health, and the status of Egypt as the nation with the highest prevalence of HCV infection in the world along with its initiatives to eradicate HCV, the International Federation of Kidney Foundations convened a consensus conference in Cairo in December 2017. This article reflects the opinions and recommendations of the contributing experts and reiterates that, with the current availability of highly effective and well tolerated pharmacotherapy, CKD patients should be given priority for the treatment of HCV, as an important step towards the World Health Organization’s goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health problem by 2030
Matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry as a reliable proteomic method for characterization of Escherichia coli and Salmonella isolates
Aim: Identification of pathogenic clinical bacterial isolates is mainly dependent on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of the microorganisms. These conventional methods are costive, time-consuming, and need special skills and training. An alternative, mass spectral (proteomics) analysis method for identification of clinical bacterial isolates has been recognized as a rapid, reliable, and economical method for identification. This study was aimed to evaluate and compare the performance, sensitivity and reliability of traditional bacteriology, phenotypic methods and matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in the identification of clinical Escherichia coli and Salmonella isolates recovered from chickens.
Materials and Methods: A total of 110 samples (cloacal, liver, spleen, and/or gall bladder) were collected from apparently healthy and diseased chickens showing clinical signs as white chalky diarrhea, pasty vent, and decrease egg production as well as freshly dead chickens which showing postmortem lesions as enlarged liver with congestion and enlarged gall bladder from different poultry farms.
Results: Depending on colonial characteristics and morphological characteristics, E. coli and Salmonella isolates were recovered and detected in only 42 and 35 samples, respectively. Biochemical identification using API 20E identification system revealed that the suspected E. coli isolates were 33 out of 42 of colonial and morphological identified E. coli isolates where Salmonella isolates were represented by 26 out of 35 of colonial and morphological identified Salmonella isolates. Serological identification of isolates revealed that the most predominant E. coli serotypes were O1 and O78 while the most predominant Salmonella serotype of Salmonella was Salmonella Pullorum. All E. coli and Salmonella isolates were examined using MALDI-TOF MS. In agreement with traditional identification, MADI-TOF MS identified all clinical bacterial samples with valid scores as E. coli and Salmonella isolates except two E. coli isolates recovered from apparently healthy and diseased birds, respectively, with recovery rate of 93.9% and 2 Salmonella isolates recovered from apparently healthy and dead birds, respectively, with recovery rate of 92.3%.
Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that Bruker MALDI-TOF MS Biotyper is a reliable rapid and economic tool for the identification of Gram-negative bacteria especially E. coli and Salmonella which could be used as an alternative diagnostic tool for routine identification and differentiation of clinical isolates in the bacteriological laboratory. MALDI-TOF MS need more validation and verification and more study on the performance of direct colony and extraction methods to detect the most sensitive one and also need using more samples to detect sensitivity, reliability, and performance of this type of bacterial identification
Supplementation of Saussurea costus root alleviates sodium nitrite-induced hepatorenal toxicity by modulating metabolic profile, inflammation, and apoptosis
Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) is a widely used food ingredient, although excessive concentrations can pose potential health risks. In the present study, we evaluated the deterioration effects of NaNO2 additives on hematology, metabolic profile, liver function, and kidney function of male Wistar rats. We further explored the therapeutic potential of supplementation with S. costus root ethanolic extract (SCREE) to improve NaNO2-induced hepatorenal toxicity. In this regard, 65 adult male rats were divided into eight groups; Group 1: control, Groups 2, 3, and 4 received SCREE in 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight, respectively, Group 5: NaNO2 (6.5 mg/kg body weight), Groups 6, 7 and 8 received NaNO2 (6.5 mg/kg body weight) in combination with SCREE (200, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight), respectively. Our results revealed that the NaNO2-treated group shows a significant change in deterioration in body and organ weights, hematological parameters, lipid profile, and hepatorenal dysfunction, as well as immunohistochemical and histopathological alterations. Furthermore, the NaNO2-treated group demonstrated a considerable increase in the expression of TNF-α cytokine and tumor suppressor gene P53 in the kidney and liver, while a significant reduction was detected in the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 and the apoptosis suppressor gene BCL-2, compared to the control group. Interestingly, SCREE administration demonstrated the ability to significantly alleviate the toxic effects of NaNO2 and improve liver function in a dose-dependent manner, including hematological parameters, lipid profile, and modulation of histopathological architecture. Additionally, SCREE exhibited the ability to modulate the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines and apoptotic genes in the liver and kidney. The phytochemical analysis revealed a wide set of primary metabolites in SCREE, including phenolics, flavonoids, vitamins, alkaloids, saponins and tannins, while the untargeted UPLC/T-TOF–MS/MS analysis identified 183 metabolites in both positive and negative ionization modes. Together, our findings establish the potential of SCREE in mitigating the toxic effects of NaNO2 by modulating metabolic, inflammatory, and apoptosis. Together, this study underscores the promise of SCREE as a potential natural food detoxifying additive to counteract the harmful impacts of sodium nitrite.Peer Reviewe
Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis
BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.
