La interculturalidad en la Educación Inicial.
The research project on interculturality in early childhood education has been developed with the purpose of studying in depth the factors that intervene in the relationships of respect and tolerance towards cultural diversity on the part of the educational community, as part of the processes comprehensive training of students. The research problem has been considered based on the deficient educational strategies to promote an intercultural education, in which the different cultural expressions that are part of the personality and history of each student are included and valued. The process of construction of intercultural education needs to be strengthened from the educational authorities and actors, from the first levels of education, since young children are in the process of forming the values and norms that allow achieving a harmonious coexistence in society . The objective on which this research has been directed is to determine the influence of interculturality in the teaching and learning processes of children in initial education. The methodology has been framed in the qualitative and quantitative approach, the bibliographic-documentary and field design, the exploratory research and the application of the techniques of the survey to the parents, interview with the teachers and the observation sheet to the parents. boys and girls of initial education level. The research project had as beneficiaries the students, teachers and parents of the initial education level of the Manuel Matheu Unit, allowing to clarify the knowledge around the formation of infants in the aspect of their personality to learn to respect, tolerate and share life experiences about the cultural expressions of each student. The results achieved by the research have allowed to conclude that interculturality is the contact and exchange between cultures in equitable terms, under conditions of equality, prioritizing respect and tolerance between members of different cultural groups, these qualities are learned from early childhood so it is convenient to stimulate it in initial education. There are some deficiencies in the educational process for which it has not been possible to strengthen interculturality, such as the lack of spaces for reflection and recognition of cultural diversity.El proyecto de investigación acerca de la interculturalidad en la educación inicial, se ha desarrollado con el propósito de estudiar a profundidad los factores que intervienen en las relaciones de respeto y tolerancia hacia la diversidad cultural por parte de la comunidad educativa, como parte de los procesos de formación integral de los estudiantes. El problema de investigación se ha considerado con base en las deficientes estrategias educativas para promover una educación interculturalidad, en la que se incluyan y valoren las diferentes expresiones culturales que son parte de la personalidad e historia de cada estudiante. El proceso de construcción de la educación intercultural necesita ser fortalecido desde las autoridades y actores educativos, desde los primeros niveles de enseñanza, pues los niños pequeños se encuentran en el proceso de formación de los valores y normas que permitan alcanzar una convivencia armoniosa en la sociedad. El objetivo sobre el cual se ha encaminado la presente investigación es determinar la influencia de la interculturalidad en los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje de los niños y niñas en la educación inicial. La metodología se ha enmarcado en el enfoque cualitativo y cuantitativo, el diseño bibliográfico-documental y de campo, la investigación exploratoria y la aplicación de las técnicas de la encuesta a los padres de familia, entrevista a los docentes y la ficha de observación a los niños y niñas del nivel de educación inicial. El proyecto de investigación tuvo como beneficiarios a los estudiantes, docentes y padres de familia del nivel de educación inicial de la Unidad Manuel Matheu, permitiendo clarificar los conocimientos en torno a la formación de los infantes en el aspecto de su personalidad para aprender a respetar, tolerar y compartir experiencias vitales acerca de las expresiones culturales de cada estudiante. Los resultados alcanzados por la investigación han permitido concluir que la interculturalidad es el contacto e intercambio entre culturas en términos equitativos, en condiciones de igualdad, priorizando el respeto y la tolerancia entre los miembros de distintos grupos culturales, estas cualidades se aprenden desde la primera infancia por lo que es conveniente estimularla en la educación inicial. Existen algunas deficiencias en el proceso educativo por lo cual no se ha podido fortalecer la interculturalidad, como la falta de espacios para la reflexión y el reconocimiento de la diversidad cultural
Identification of Differentially Expressed MicroRNAs in the Rat Hippocampus during Adolescence through an Epigenome-Wide Analysis

Their role in adolescent brain development, however, has been poorly described. The present study aimed to explore miRNA expression in the hippocampus during adolescence compared to adulthood in rats. Method: The brains of female and male Wistar rats were extracted, and the hippocampus was freshly dissected at postnatal day 41 (adolescence) and postnatal day 98 (adulthood). An epigenome-wide analysis was conducted to identify the miRNAs significantly expressed in adolescence compared to adulthood. Additionally, target genes of such miRNAs were considered to perform an exploratory Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis. Results: We identified 16 differentially expressed miRNAs in adolescent male rats compared with adult male rats and 4 differentially expressed miRNAs in adolescent females compared with adult females. Enrichment analysis reinforced that the target genes found are related to neurodevelopmental processes such as cell proliferation, cell migration, and nervous system development. Conclusion: Our findings suggest a complex pattern of miRNA expression during adolescence, which differs from that in adulthood. The differential expression of miRNA in the hippocampus during adolescence may be associated with the late developmental changes occurring in this brain region. Furthermore, the observed sex differences in miRNA expression patterns indicate potential sexual differentiation in hippocampal development. Tempranillo grape extract in transfersomes: A nanoproduct with antioxidant activity
Polyphenols are gaining increasing interest due to their beneficial properties to human health. Grape pomace, the by-product of wine production, is a source of these bioactive compounds. An extract from Tempranillo grape pomace was obtained and characterized qualitatively and quantitatively. The major components found were anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols, and flavonols. To improve the bioavailability of these compounds, the extract was formulated in phospholipid vesicles, namely transfersomes. Spherical unilamellar vesicles around 100 nm each were obtained. The antioxidant activity of both the extract and the transfersomes was evaluated by using colorimetric assays (i.e., DPPH, FRAP, and Folin–Ciocalteu). The cells’ viability and the antioxidant activity were assessed in keratinocytes. The results showed that the extract and the transfersomes had no cytotoxic effects and exerted remarkable antioxidant activity, which was more evident in a vesicle formulation. These findings highlighted the potential of the Tempranillo grape pomace extract and the efficacy of the incorporation into phospholipid vesicles.Fil: Asensio Regalado, Carlos. Antimicrobial activity of phenolic extract of apple pomace against Paenibacillus larvae and its toxicity on Apis mellifera
Apis mellifera populations are exposed to different biotic and abiotic stressors that affect the bee survival. Paenibacillus larvae, the causative agent of American foulbrood, is one of the most important bacterial pathogens that affect bee health. In some countries, the use of antibiotics is the most common method for prevention and treatment of P. larvae infected colonies. However, this application can increase the risk of occurrence of resistant strains. An ecological alternative is the use of vegetal extracts containing bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols. The aim of this study is to check the antimicrobial activity of phenolic extracts of apple pomace, coming from the cider industry, against P. larvae strains by the broth micro dilution method. Besides, the toxicity of the phenolic extracts on A. mellifera was verified using the complete exposure method. All extracts contain from 715.31 to 11348.16 μg gal/g DW, determined by Folin-Ciocalteu showed antimicrobial activity against P. larvae genotype ERIC I, ranging from 23µg/mL to 150 µg/mL. Toxicity assays of apple pomace extracts on adult bees exhibited a maximum mortality of 18% after 48h. Exploring the Chemistry of Ocimum Species under Specific Extractions and Chromatographic Methods: A Systematic Review
Ocimum is considered the largest genus in the Lamiacea family. The genus includes basil, a group of aromatic plants with a wide range of culinary uses that nowadays draws attention for its medicinal and pharmaceutical potential. This systematic review intends to explore the chemical composition of nonessential oils and their variation across different Ocimum species. Moreover, we aimed to identify the state of knowledge regarding the molecular space in this genus as well as the different methods of extraction/identification and geographical location. Seventy-nine eligible articles were selected for the final analysis, from which we extracted more than 300 molecules. We found that the countries with the highest number of studies into Ocimum species are India, Nigeria, Brazil, and Egypt. However, from all known species of Ocimum, only 12 were found to have an extensive chemical characterization, particularly Ocimum basilicum and Ocimum tenuiflorum. Our study focused especially on alcoholic, hydroalcoholic, and water extracts, in which the main techniques for compound identifications are GC-MS, LC-MS, and LC-UV. Across the compiled molecules, we found a wide variety of compounds, especially flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids, suggesting that this genus could be a very useful source of possible bioactive compounds. The information collected in this review also emphasizes the huge gap between the vast number of Ocimum species discovered and the number of studies in each of them that determined the chemical characterization.We thank the Universidad de Las Américas, Quito, Ecuador, for the financial support of the PhD students A. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles decorated mesoporous silica nanosystem for combined antibiofilm therapy
A crucial challenge to face in the treatment of biofilm-associated infection is the ability of bacteria to develop resistance to traditional antimicrobial therapies based on the administration of antibiotics alone. This study aims to apply magnetic hyperthermia together with controlled antibiotic delivery from a unique magnetic-responsive nanocarrier for a combination therapy against biofilm. The design of the nanosystem is based on antibiotic-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) externally functionalized with a thermo-responsive polymer capping layer, and decorated in the outermost surface with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). The SPIONs are able to generate heat upon application of an alternating magnetic field (AMF), reaching the temperature needed to induce a change in the polymer conformation from linear to globular, therefore triggering pore uncapping and the antibiotic cargo release. The microbiological assays indicated that exposure of E. coli biofilms to 200 µg/mL of the nanosystem and the application of an AMF (202 kHz, 30 mT) decreased the number of viable bacteria by 4 log10 units compared with the control. 1H–NMR fingerprinting and supervised pattern recognition to evaluate the stability of virgin olive oil during storage
Metabolomic fingerprinting of virgin olive oil (VOO) by 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to study its stability during storage simulating normal shelf life conditions during its commercialization. A representative set of VOOs covering the full range of possible chemical compositions were exposed to light (500 lux for 12 h/day) at 25 °C for 12 months or stored in the dark at 25 °C, 30 °C and 35 °C for 24 months. Multivariate data analysis of the 1H NMR spectra of the oil samples provided classification models to evaluate VOO freshness and to verify the light exposure of the VOO during storage, as well as regression models to determine VOO storage time and tentatively the best before date of a fresh VOO. These predictive models disclosed the chemical compounds responsible for the compositional changes in VOO due to hydrolytic and oxidative degradation taking place during its storage, and confirmed that light and increasing temperature enhance these processes. The presence of characteristic resonances of hydroperoxides (primary oxidation products) and the decrease of 1H signals assigned to phenolic compounds, mainly secoiridoid derivatives, and other minor compounds such as fatty acids, squalene and native (E)-2-hexenal present in fresh VOO revealed its oxidative degradation. Further, the emergence of low intensity 1H signals of saturated aldehydes meant that the secondary oxidation process has started at a low rate and yield. Moreover, the decrease of the 1H signals of triacylglycerides and sn-1,2-diacylglycerides, and the increase of sn-1,3-diacylglycerides indicated that hydrolytic degradation of VOO and diacylglyceride isomerisation was occurring. 1H NMR fingerprint of VOO together with pattern recognition techniques afford relevant information to assess the quality of VOOs taking into consideration legal, sensory and health-promoting aspects.Fil: Alonso Salces, Rosa Maria. One-Step Isolation of Monoterpene Indole Alkaloids from Psychotria Leiocarpa Leaves and Their Antiviral Activity on Dengue Virus Type-2
The leaf MeOH extract of Psychotria leiocarpa (Rubiaceae) showed in vitro non-cytotoxic and anti-dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV2) activity in human hepatocarcinoma cell lineage (HepG2). A one-step and cost-effective reversed-phase solid-phase extraction method based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) parameters allowed the isolation, directly from this bioactive extract, of the monoterpene indole alkaloids: N-glucopyranosyl vincosamide (1), vincosamide (2) and strictosidinic acid (3). The chemical structures were characterized based on 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), UV and high-resolution mass spectra (HRMS). The methodology has also allowed yielding a polyphenolic-rich fraction that was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detection and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS) revealing two fiavonol triglycosides (4, 5) and three caffeoylquinic acid isomers (6-8). Compound 3 is reported for the first time in P leiocarpa and all the phenolic compounds (4-8) are described for the first time in the genus Psychotria. Reduced L-carnitine transport in aortic endothelial cells from spontaneously hypertensive rats
Impaired L-carnitine uptake correlates with higher blood pressure in adult men, and L-carnitine restores endothelial function in aortic rings from spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Thus, endothelial dysfunction in hypertension could result from lower L-carnitine transport in this cell type. L-Carnitine transport is mainly mediated by novel organic cation transporters 1 (Octn1, Na+-independent) and 2 (Octn2, Na+-dependent); however, their kinetic properties and potential consequences in hypertension are unknown. We hypothesize that L-carnitine transport kinetic properties will be altered in aortic endothelium from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). L-Carnitine transport was measured at different extracellular pH (pHo 5.5–8.5) in the absence or presence of sodium in rat aortic endothelial cells (RAECs) from non-hypertensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats and SHR. Octn1 and Octn2 mRNA relative expression was also determined. Dilation of endothelium-intact or denuded aortic rings in response to calcitonine gene related peptide (CGRP, 0.1–100 nmol/L) was measured (myography) in the absence or presence of L-carnitine. Total L-carnitine transport was lower in cells from SHR compared with WKY rats, an effect due to reduced Na+-dependent (Na+dep) compared with Na+-independent (Na+indep) transport components. Saturable L-carnitine transport kinetics show maximal velocity (Vmax), without changes in apparent Km for Na+indep transport in SHR compared with WKY rats. Total and Na+dep component of transport were increased, but Na+indep transport was reduced by extracellular alkalization in WKY rats. However, alkalization reduced total and Na+indep transport in cells from SHR. Octn2 mRNA was higher than Octn-1 mRNA expression in cells from both conditions. Dilation of artery rings in response to CGRP was reduced in vessels from SHR compared with WKY rats. CGRP effect was endothelium-dependent and restored by L-carnitine. All together these results suggest that reduced L-carnitine transport (likely via Na+-dependent Octn2) could limit this compound's potential beneficial effects in RAECs from SHR
