    Imprints of Spinning Particles on Primordial Cosmological Perturbations

    If there exist higher-spin particles during inflation which are light compared to the Hubble rate, they may leave distinct statistical anisotropic imprints on the correlators involving scalar and graviton fluctuations. We characterise such signatures using the dS/CFT3_3 correspondence and the operator product expansion techniques.     Knowledge-based System to Support Architectural Design. Intelligent objects, project net-constraints, collaborative work

    The architectural design business is marked by a progressive increase in operators all cooperating towards the realization of building structures and complex infrastructures (Jenckes, 1997). This type of design implies the simulta-neous activity of specialists in different fields, often working a considerable dis-tance apart, on increasingly distributed design studies. Collaborative Architectural Design comprises a vast field of studies that em-braces also these sectors and problems. To mention but a few: communication among operators in the building and design sector; design process system logic architecture; conceptual structure of the building organism; building component representation; conflict identification and management; sharing of knowledge; and also, user interface; global evaluation of solutions adopted; IT definition of objects; inter-object communication (in the IT sense). The point of view of the research is that of the designers of the architectural arte-fact (Simon, 1996); its focus consists of the relations among the various design operators and among the latter and the information exchanged: the Building Objects. Its primary research goal is thus the conceptual structure of the building organ-ism for the purpose of managing conflicts and developing possible methods of resolving them

    Repeatability and Two-Dimensionality of Model Scale Sloshing Impacts

    Canonical test cases for sloshing wave impact problems are pre-sented and discussed. In these cases the experimental setup has been simpli?ed seeking the highest feasible repeatability; a rectangular tank subjected to harmonic roll motion has been the tested con?guration. Both lateral and roof impacts have been studied, since both cases are relevant in sloshing assessment and show speci?c dynamics. An analysis of the impact pressure of the ?rst four impact events is provided in all cases. It has been found that not in all cases a Gaussian ?tting of each individual peak is feasible. The tests have been conducted with both water and oil in order to obtain high and moderate Reynolds number data; the latter may be useful as simpler test cases to assess the capabilities of CFD codes in simulating sloshing impacts. The re-peatability of impact pressure values increases dramatically when using oil. In addition, a study of the two-dimensionality of the problem using a tank con?guration that can be adjusted to 4 di?erent thicknesses has been carried out. Though the kinemat-ics of the free surface does not change signi cantly in some of the cases, the impact pressure values of the ?rst impact events changes substantially from the small to the large aspect ratios thus meaning that attention has to be paid to this issue when reference data is used for validation of 2D and 3D CFD codes

    How Does Positive Work-Related Stress Affect the Degree of Innovation Development?

    Many studies sustain that work-related stress exerts pervasive consequences on the employees’ levels of performance, productivity, and wellbeing. However, it remains unclear whether certain levels of stress might lead to positive outcomes regarding employees’ innovativeness. Hence, this paper examines how the five dimensions of work-related stress impact on the employees’ levels of innovation performance. To this aim, this study focused on a sample of 1487 employees from six Italian companies. To test the research hypotheses under assessment, we relied on the use of the partial least squares (PLS) technique. Our results reveal that, in summary, the stressors job autonomy, job demands, and role ambiguity exert a positive and significant impact on the employees’ levels of innovativeness. However, this study failed to find evidence that the supervisors’ support–innovation and colleagues’ support–innovation links are not statistically significant. View Full-Tex

    Reference values for railway sidings track geometry

    Railway sidings are operated at speeds much lower than those used on national railway lines; a typical speed is 6 km/h. In establishing reference values for maintenance of railway infrastructure in terms of the geometry for such operating conditions, it is noted that both national and European regulations do not provide specific information regarding railway sidings. The overall objective of the research is, therefore, the definition of possible reference values for track geometry, based on those adopted by European rail networks (European and national standards), which can guarantee the appropriate security level for low speed operation typical of railway sidings connected to the national network. The basic principle in defining these values is the maximization of technical-economic efficiency and the maintenance of the acceptability of the risk associated to railway operation. The research results can therefore provide useful information about the cost-effective management of maintenance and safe operation for railway sidings. For this purpose, the approach was inspired to that of Regulation 402/2013, which defines at European level a common safety method for risk analysis. Quantification of probabilities and damages should be based on simulation models because the available statistics do not allow significant results to be inferred. However, the research sector has not yet produced a consolidated modelling. For these reasons, and since it is not possible to quantify probabilities reliably, the proposals resulting from this research are based on the identification of situations where it can be shown that the hazard probability remains unchanged. The approach used to formulate possible reference values valid outside of national networks (railway sidings) is based on an understanding of the underlying principles of the codes of good practice, on the formulation of hypotheses conform to the same principles, and the proposals about mitigative measures of risk associated to the use of different reference values, such as to keep the risk of the railway within the limits of acceptability, acting conservatively so as to keep unchanged, or reduce, the probability of hazardous events.The assessment parameters, object of the first phase of the research referred to in this work and used here as an example, are longitudinal level and alignment of railway track. In the case of vehicles running at low speed, the study was conducted by varying the magnitude of the reference values by using values that belong to external intervals with respect to those in accordance with European and national codes of good practice, examining the corresponding effects on the physical quantities related to safety. The effects of their variations on the wheel-rail interaction forces were studied using a simple dynamic model (with one degree of freedom) and a random generated excitation given by track defectiveness and the corresponding random response in terms of vertical and lateral contact forces (Q and Y)

    Multimedia and Knowledge-based Computer-aided Architectural Design

    It appears by now fairly accepted to many researchers in the field of the Computer Aided Architectural Design that the way to realize support tools for these aims is by means of the realization of Knowledge Based Assistants. This kind of computer programs, based on the knowledge engineering, finds their power and efficaciousness by their knowledge bases. Nowdays this kind of tools is leaving the research world and it appears evident that the common graphic interfaces and the modalities of dialogue between the architect and the computer, are inadequate to support the exchange of information that the use of these tools requires. The use of the knowledge bases furthermore, presupposes that the conceptual model of the building realized by others, must be made entirely understandable to the architect . The CAAD Laboratory has carried out a system software prototype based on Knowledge Engineering in the field of hospital buildings. In order to overcame the limit of software systems based on usual Knowledge Engineering, by improving architect-computer interaction, at CAAD Lab it is refining building model introducing into the knowledge base two complementary each other methodologies: the conceptual clustering and multimedia technics. This research will make it possible for architects navigate consciously through the domain of the knowledge base already implemented
