Extreme southern locations for moss sporophytes in Antarctica
Abundant immature sporophytes of the moss Pottia heimii are reported from the Lower Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys and from Cape Chocolate, Victoria Land. These finds extend the reported southern limit for the occurrence of abundant moss sporophytes to 77° 55âČS
Solid angle subtended by a cylindrical detector at a point source in terms of elliptic integrals
The solid angle subtended by a right circular cylinder at a point source
located at an arbitrary position generally consists of a sum of two terms: that
defined by the cylindrical surface () and the other by either of
the end circles (). We derive an expression for
in terms of elliptic integrals of the first and third kinds and give similar
expressions for using integrals of the first and second kinds.
These latter can be used alternatively to an expression also in terms of
elliptic integrals, due to Philip A. Macklin and included as a footnote in
Masket (Rev. Sci. Instr., 28 (3), 191-197, 1957). The solid angle subtended by
the whole cylinder when the source is located at an arbitrary location can then
be calculated using elliptic integrals.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, LaTex. Typos corrected. References added.

Electrical and Mechanical Properties of new Recyclable Power Cable Insulation Materials based upon Polyethylene Blends
Chemically crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) has been used as electrical insulation for power cables since the 1970s due to its favourable combination of electrical and mechanical properties. However, as the electrical engineering community has become increasingly aware of the life cycle environmental impacts, XLPE has come under scrutiny for its lack of recyclability and the high process energies used in its manufacture. Although technologies are being developed to facilitate the re-use of XLPE at the end of its initial service life, the use of this material is inferior to fully recyclable and low process energy alternatives. In this investigation, we concentrated on the use of binary blends of linear and branched polyethylene (LPE / BPE) as potential replacement materials for XLPE, since such systems have the potential to combine comparable mechanical properties and enhanced breakdown strength with good recyclability. We compare the thin film AC ramp breakdown behaviour of blends as a function of temperature up to 97 oC. These consist of the same BPE in virgin and crosslinked states and in a blend with 20wt% LPE. These data are augmented with dynamic mechanical analysis. In concert, these data indicate that with appropriate morphological control the blended thermoplastic material exhibits superior properties to XLPE under conventional operating conditions and may even be suitable for higher temperature operation than XLPE. The paper will discuss the importance of polymer blending and blend physical properties in the context of the process requirements and the implications for cable manufacture and on cable electrical and environmental performance in comparison with XLPE
Analytical calculation of the solid angle defined by a cylindrical detector and a point cosine source with orthogonal axes
We derive analytical expressions for the solid angle subtended by a right
circular cylinder at a point source with cosine angular distribution in the
case where the source and the cylinder axes are mutually orthogonal.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, Latex. Typos corrected. Accepted in Rad. Phys.

Instantons and SL(2,R) Symmetry in Type IIB Supergravity
We discuss the relation between the dual formulations of Type IIB
supergravity emphasizing the differences between Lorentz and Euclidean
signature. We demonstrate how the SL(2,R) symmetry of the usual action is
manifested in the solution of the equations of motion with Euclidean signature
for the dual theory.Comment: 4 pages, no figure
Understanding basic numbers : examples from Brexit, Covid and common medical conditions
The UK Brexit debate and the current Covid pandemic have been fertile grounds for people seeking poor use of statistics, and demonstrate a need to reiterate some basic principles of data presentation. Communicating basic numbers to convey the correct message is a vital skill for a public health professional but even basic numbers can be difficult to understand, and are susceptible to misuse. The first issue is how to understand âorphanâ numbers; numbers quoted without comparison or context. This leads on to the problems of understanding numbers as proportions and how to make comparisons using proportions. Percentages, and in particular percentage changes, are also a major source of misunderstanding and the baseline percentage should always be given. The use of relative risk can also convey the wrong message and should always be accompanied by a measure of absolute risk. Similarly, numbers needed to treat should also refer to baseline risks. Communicating numbers is often more effective using natural counts or frequencies rather than fractions or proportions, and using pictorial representations of proportions can also be effective. The paper will also examine the problems of using simple ratios to try and adjust one continuous variable by another in particular the use of the BMI and for standardising death rates by institution. The misuse of reporting occurs in primary sources such as academic papers, but even more so in secondary reporting sources such as general media reports. It is natural to try and convey complex messages using a single summary number, but there are assumptions behind these summaries that should be questioned. It is usually better to give the individual numbers rather than a ratio of them
Instantons of Type IIB Supergravity in Ten Dimensions
A family of SO(10) symmetric instanton solutions in Type IIB supergravity is
developed. The instanton of least action is a candidate for the low-energy,
semiclassical approximation to the {D=--1} brane. Unlike a previously published
solution,[GGP] this admits an interpretation as a tunneling amplitude between
perturbatively degenerate asymptotic states, but with action twice that found
previously. A number of associated issues are discussed such as the relation
between the magnetic and electric pictures, an inversion symmetry of the
dilaton and the metric, the topology of the background, and some
properties of the solution in an "instanton frame" corresponding to a
Lagrangian in which the dilaton's kinetic energy vanishes.Comment: 15 pages, no figures; Version 2 has revised sections IV and V.

The Coupling of Yang-Mills to Extended Objects
The coupling of Yang-Mills fields to the heterotic string in bosonic
formulation is generalized to extended objects of higher dimension (p-branes).
For odd p, the Bianchi identities obeyed by the field strengths of the
(p+1)-forms receive Chern-Simons corrections which, in the case of the 5-brane,
are consistent with an earlier conjecture based on string/5-brane duality.Comment: 14 Page
D3-branes on the Coulomb branch and instantons
The relative coefficients of higher derivative interactions of the IIB
effective action of the form C^4, (D F_5)^4, F_5^8, ... (where C is the Weyl
tensor and F_5 is the five-form field strength) are motivated by supersymmetry
arguments. It is shown that the classical supergravity solution for N parallel
D3-branes is unaltered by this combination of terms. The non-vanishing of
\zeroC^2 in this background (where \zero C is the background value of the Weyl
tensor) leads to effective O(1/alpha') interactions, such as C^2 and Lambda^8
(where Lambda is the dilatino). These contain D-instanton contributions in
addition to tree and one-loop terms. The near horizon limit of the N D3-brane
system describes a multi-AdS_5xS^5 geometry that is dual to \calN=4 SU(N)
Yang-Mills theory spontaneously broken to S(U(M_1)x...xU(M_r)). Here, the N
D3-branes are grouped into r coincident bunches with M_r in each group, with
M_r/N = m_r fixed as N goes to infinity. The boundary correlation function of
eight Lambda's is constructed explicitly. The second part of the paper
considers effects of a constrained instanton in this large-N Yang-Mills theory
by an extension of the analysis of Dorey, Hollowood and Khoze of the
one-instanton measure at finite N. This makes precise the correspondence with
the supergravity D-instanton measure at leading order in the 1/N expansion.
However, the duality between instanton-induced correlation functions in
Yang-Mills theory and the dual supergravity is somewhat obscured by
complications relating to the structure of constrained instantons.Comment: 30 pages, JHEP style. Typos corrected and minor clarifications adde
