    Attitude Determination and Launch Diagnostics for a Picosat via Kalman Filtering of Magnetometer Data

    The picosat is a hockey puck sized spinning spacecraft with a two-axis ring core \u27fluxgate magnetometer. The purpose of the picosat project is to demonstrate the technologies required to take simultaneous spatially distributed measurements of fields and particles with very small spacecraft. The on-board magnetometer supports this purpose by validating the field measurement objective, and by providing attitude dynamics information for use in evaluating the launch mechanism/procedure. The paper presents methods developed for picosat attitude determination and dynamic modeling using data from the two-axis fluxgate magnetometer. Several picosat launch anomaly scenarios will be characterized to facilitate evaluation of the on-orbit performance of the launch system

    Problems Experienced in the Second and Third Months After Discharge From a Heart Failure-Related Hospitalization

    The purpose of this study was to identify high-priority problems experienced by individuals during the second and third month after discharge from an acute care facility for heart failure. This descriptive, exploratory study, an extension of a previous analysis that examined high-priority problems in the first month, comprised 19 participants who were assigned to an intervention group that received a randomized, 12-week-pilot coping partnership (COPE-HF) intervention. A trained research nurse provided the intervention, and participants used a standard list to identify high-priority heart failure-related problems. Quantitative and content data analysis was conducted. While the highest-priority problem continued to be managing their treatment regimens, the frequency of this problem lessened by week 12. Comorbidities emerged as a new problem in managing heart failure treatment and symptoms. Coping emerged as a new problem, as individuals with heart failure dealt with the impending morbidity of their diagnosis and how it would affect loved ones. Resource issues (ie, financial, social) became more prevalent for individuals with heart failure as potential and actual resources were depleted. Health providers should develop strategies to address these problems to improve outcomes in individuals with heart failure

    Resisting the desire for the unambiguous: productive gaps in researcher, teacher and student interpretations of a number story task

    This article offers reflections on task design in the context of a Grade R (reception year) in-service numeracy project in South Africa. The research explores under what conditions, and for what learning purpose, a task designed by someone else may be recast and how varying given task specifications may support or inhibit learning, as a result of that recasting. This question is situated within a two-pronged task design challenge as to emerging gaps between the task designer’s intentions and teacher’s actions and secondly between the teachers’ intentions and students’ actions. Through analysing two teachers and their respective Grade R students’ interpretations of a worksheet task, provided to teachers in the project, we illuminate the way explicit constraints, in the form of task specifications, can be both enabling and constraining of learning. In so doing we recast this ‘double gap’ as enabling productive learning spaces for teacher educators, teachers and students

    Requirement of a Membrane Potential for the Posttranslational Transfer of Proteins into Mitochondsria

    Posttranslational transfer of most precursor proteins into mitochondria is dependent on energization of the mitochondria. Experiments were carried out to determine whether the membrane potential or the intramitochondrial ATP is the immediate energy source. Transfer in vitro of precursors to the ADP/ATP carrier and to ATPase subunit 9 into isolated Neurospora mitochondria was investigated. Under conditions where the level of intramitochondrial ATP was high and the membrane potential was dissipated, import and processing of these precursor proteins did not take place. On the other hand, precursors were taken up and processed when the intramitochondrial ATP level was low, but the membrane potential was not dissipated.
