Eccentric binary black-hole mergers: The transition from inspiral to plunge in general relativity
We study the transition from inspiral to plunge in general relativity by
computing gravitational waveforms of non-spinning, equal-mass black-hole
binaries. We consider three sequences of simulations, starting with a
quasi-circular inspiral completing 1.5, 2.3 and 9.6 orbits, respectively, prior
to coalescence of the holes. For each sequence, the binding energy of the
system is kept constant and the orbital angular momentum is progressively
reduced, producing orbits of increasing eccentricity and eventually a head-on
collision. We analyze in detail the radiation of energy and angular momentum in
gravitational waves, the contribution of different multipolar components and
the final spin of the remnant. We find that the motion transitions from
inspiral to plunge when the orbital angular momentum L=L_crit is about 0.8M^2.
For L<L_crit the radiated energy drops very rapidly. Orbits with L of about
L_crit produce our largest dimensionless Kerr parameter for the remnant,
j=J/M^2=0.724. Generalizing a model recently proposed by Buonanno, Kidder and
Lehner to eccentric binaries, we conjecture that (1) j=0.724 is the maximal
Kerr parameter that can be obtained by any merger of non-spinning holes, and
(2) no binary merger (even if the binary members are extremal Kerr black holes
with spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum, and the inspiral is highly
eccentric) can violate the cosmic censorship conjecture.Comment: Added sequence of long inspirals to the study. To match published

Collins functions for pions from SIDIS and new e+e- data: a first glance at their transverse momentum dependence
New data from Belle and BaBar Collaborations on azimuthal asymmetries,
measured in e+e- annihilations into pion pairs at Q^2=112 GeV^2, allow to take
the first, direct glance at the transverse momentum dependence of the Collins
functions, in addition to their z dependence. These data, together with
available Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) data on the Collins
asymmetry, are simultaneously analysed in the framework of the generalised
parton model assuming two alternative Q^2 evolution schemes and exploiting two
different parameterisations for the Collins functions. The corresponding
results for the transversity distributions are presented. Analogous data, newly
released by the BESIII Collaboration, on e+e- annihilations into pion pairs at
the lower Q^2 of 13 GeV^2, offer the possibility to explore the sensitivity of
these azimuthal correlations on transverse momentum dependent evolution

Probing Trilinear Gauge Boson Interactions via Single Electroweak Gauge Boson Production at the LHC
We analyze the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to study
anomalous trilinear vector-boson interactions W^+ W^- \gamma and W^+ W^- Z
through the single production of electroweak gauge bosons via the weak boson
fusion processes q q -> q q W (-> \ell^\pm \nu) and q q -> q q Z(-> \ell^+
\ell^-) with \ell = e or \mu. After a careful study of the standard model
backgrounds, we show that the single production of electroweak bosons at the
LHC can provide stringent tests on deviations of these vertices from the
standard model prediction. In particular, we show that single gauge boson
production exhibits a sensitivity to the couplings \Delta \kappa_{Z,\gamma}
similar to that attainable from the analysis of electroweak boson pair

Abundance Analysis of Planetary Host Stars I. Differential Iron Abundances
We present atmospheric parameters and iron abundances derived from
high-resolution spectra for three samples of dwarf stars: stars which are known
to host close-in giant planets (CGP), stars for which radial velocity data
exclude the presence of a close-in giant planetary companion (no-CGP), as well
as a random sample of dwarfs with a spectral type and magnitude distribution
similar to that of the planetary host stars (control). All stars have been
observed with the same instrument and have been analyzed using the same model
atmospheres, atomic data and equivalent width modeling program. Abundances have
been derived differentially to the Sun, using a solar spectrum obtained with
Callisto as the reflector with the same instrumentation. We find that the iron
abundances of CGP dwarfs are on average by 0.22 dex greater than that of no-CGP
dwarfs. The iron abundance distributions of both the CGP and no-CGP dwarfs are
different than that of the control dwarfs, while the combined iron abundances
have a distribution which is very similar to that of the control dwarfs. All
four samples (CGP, no-CGP, combined, control) have different effective
temperature distributions. We show that metal enrichment occurs only for CGP
dwarfs with temperatures just below solar and approximately 300 K higher than
solar, whereas the abundance difference is insignificant at Teff around 6000 K.Comment: 52 pages (aastex 11pt, preprint style), including 17 figures and 13

The SSS phase of RS Ophiuchi observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton I.: Data and preliminary Modeling
The phase of Super-Soft-Source (SSS) emission of the sixth recorded outburst
of the recurrent nova RS Oph was observed twice with Chandra and once with
XMM-Newton. The observations were taken on days 39.7, 54.0, and 66.9 after
outburst. We confirm a 35-sec period on day 54.0 and found that it originates
from the SSS emission and not from the shock. We discus the bound-free
absorption by neutral elements in the line of sight, resonance absorption lines
plus self-absorbed emission line components, collisionally excited emission
lines from the shock, He-like intersystem lines, and spectral changes during an
episode of high-amplitude variability. We find a decrease of the oxygen K-shell
absorption edge that can be explained by photoionization of oxygen. The
absorption component has average velocities of -1286+-267 km/s on day 39.7 and
of -771+-65 km/s on day 66.9. The wavelengths of the emission line components
are consistent with their rest wavelengths as confirmed by measurements of
non-self absorbed He-like intersystem lines. We have evidence that these lines
originate from the shock rather than the outer layers of the outflow and may be
photoexcited in addition to collisional excitations. We found collisionally
excited emission lines that are fading at wavelengths shorter than 15A that
originate from the radiatively cooling shock. On day 39.5 we find a systematic
blue shift of -526+-114 km/s from these lines. We found anomalous He-like f/i
ratios which indicates either high densities or significant UV radiation near
the plasma where the emission lines are formed. During the phase of strong
variability the spectral hardness light curve overlies the total light curve
when shifted by 1000sec. This can be explained by photoionization of neutral
oxygen in the line of sight if the densities of order 10^{10}-10^{11} cm^{-3}.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. Accepted by ApJ; v2: Co-author

Rare manifestation of a c.290 C\u3eT, p.Gly97Glu VCP mutation
Introduction. The valosin-containing protein (VCP) regulates several distinct cellular processes. Consistent with this, VCP mutations manifest variable clinical phenotypes among and within families and are a diagnostic challenge. Methods. A 60-year-old man who played ice hockey into his 50âs was evaluated by electrodiagnostics, muscle biopsy, and molecular genetics. Results. With long-standing pes cavus and toe walking, our patient developed progressive weakness, cramps, memory loss, and paresthesias at age 52. An axonal sensorimotor neuropathy was found upon repeated testing at age 58. Neuropathic histopathology was present in the quadriceps, and exome sequencing revealed the VCP mutation c.290 C>T, p.Gly97Glu. Conclusions. Our patient reflects the clinical heterogeneity of VCP mutations, as his neurological localization is a spectrum between a lower motor neuron disorder and a hereditary axonal peripheral neuropathy such as CMT2. Our case demonstrates a rare manifestation of the c.290 C>T, pGly97Glu VCP mutation
Relating harmonic and projective descriptions of N=2 nonlinear sigma models
Recent papers have established the relationship between projective superspace
and a complexified version of harmonic superspace. We extend this construction
to the case of general nonlinear sigma models in both frameworks. Using an
analogy with Hamiltonian mechanics, we demonstrate how the Hamiltonian
structure of the harmonic action and the symplectic structure of the projective
action naturally arise from a single unifying action on a complexified version
of harmonic superspace. This links the harmonic and projective descriptions of
hyperkahler target spaces. For the two examples of Taub-NUT and Eguchi-Hanson,
we show how to derive the projective superspace solutions from the harmonic

Horizon Formation in High-Energy Particles Collision
We investigate a classical formation of a trapped surface in 4-dimensional
flat space-time in a process of a non-head-on collision of two high-energy
particles which are treated as Aichelburg-Sexl shock waves. From the condition
of the horizon volume local maximality an equation for the trapped surface is
deduced. Using a known solution on the shocks we find a time-dependent solution
describing the trapped surface between the shocks. We analyze the horizon
appearance and evolution. Obtained results may describe qualitatively the
