Soil and water pollution in a banana production region in tropical Mexico
The effects of abundant Mancozeb (Mn, Zn— bisdithiocarbamate) applications (2.5 kg ha-1week-1 for 10 years) on soil and surface-, subsurface- and groundwater pollution were monitored in a banana production region of tropical Mexico. In soils, severe manganese accumulation was observed, wheras the main metabolite ethylenethiourea was near the detection limit. Surface and subsurface water was highly polluted with ethylenethiourea, the main metabolite of Mancozeb (22.5 and 4.3 lg L-1, respectively), but not with manganese. In deep ground water, no ethylenethiourea was detected. The level of pollution in the region presents a worrisome risk for aquatic life and for human health
A mechanism for randomness
We investigate explicit functions that can produce truly random numbers. We
use the analytical properties of the explicit functions to show that certain
class of autonomous dynamical systems can generate random dynamics. This
dynamics presents fundamental differences with the known chaotic systems. We
present realphysical systems that can produce this kind of random time-series.
We report theresults of real experiments with nonlinear circuits containing
direct evidence for this new phenomenon. In particular, we show that a
Josephson junction coupled to a chaotic circuit can generate unpredictable
dynamics. Some applications are discussed.Comment: Accepted in Physics Letters A (2002). 11 figures (.eps
A little garbage in, lots of garbage out: Assessing the impact of careless responding in personality survey data
[EN]In self-report surveys, it is common that some individuals do not pay enough attention and effort to give valid responses. Our aim was to investigate the extent to which careless and insufficient effort responding contributes to the biasing of data.We performed analyses of dimensionality, internal structure, and data reliability of four personality scales (extroversion, conscientiousness, stability, and dispositional optimism) in two independent samples. In order to identify careless/insufficient effort (C/IE) respondents, we used a factor mixture model (FMM) designed to detect inconsistencies of response to items with different semantic polarity. The FMM identified between 4.4% and 10% of C/IE cases, depending on the scale and the sample examined. In the complete samples, all the theoretical models obtained an unacceptable fit, forcing the rejection of the starting hypothesis and making additional wording factors necessary. In the clean samples, all the theoretical models fitted satisfactorily, and the wording factors practically disappeared. Trait estimates in the clean samples were between 4.5% and 11.8% more accurate than in the complete samples. These results show that a limited amount of C/IE data can lead to a drastic deterioration in the fit of the theoretical model, produce large amounts of spurious variance, raise serious doubts about the dimensionality and internal structure of the data, and reduce the reliability with which the trait scores of all surveyed are estimated. Identifying and filtering C/IE responses is necessary to ensure the validity of research result
Core Mass Estimates in Strong Lensing Galaxy Clusters Using a Single-halo Lens Model
The core mass of galaxy clusters is an important probe of structure formation. Here we evaluate the use of a singlehalo model (SHM) as an efficient method to estimate the strong lensing cluster core mass, testing it with ray-traced images from the Outer Rim simulation. Unlike detailed lens models, the SHM represents the cluster mass distribution with a single halo and can be automatically generated from the measured lensing constraints. We find that the projected core mass estimated with this method, MSHM, has a scatter of 8.52% and a bias of 0.90% compared to the “true” mass within the same aperture. Our analysis shows no systematic correlation between the scatter or bias and the lens-source system properties. The bias and scatter can be reduced to 3.26% and 0.34%, respectively, by excluding models that fail a visual inspection test. We find that the SHM success depends on the lensing geometry, with single giant arc configurations accounting for most of the failed cases due to their limiting constraining power. When excluding such cases, we measure a scatter and bias of 3.88% and 0.84%, respectively. Finally, we find that when the source redshift is unknown, the model-predicted redshifts are overestimated, and the MSHM is underestimated by a few percent, highlighting the importance of securing spectroscopic redshifts of background sources. Our analysis provides a quantitative characterization of MSHM, enabling its efficient use as a tool to estimate the strong lensing cluster core masses in the large samples, expected from current and future surveys
Gender Differences Regarding Self-Perceived Physical and Mental Health in Spanish University Sports and Physical Therapy Students after Termination of the COVID-19 Lockdown Period
The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented situation that raised concerns about the physical and mental health of adolescents. Several surveys demonstrated that post-lockdown, women reported more complaints and lower perceived quality of life compared to men. The aim of this study was to analyze gender differences in self-reported physical and mental health immediately after the second lock-down restrictions (July 2020 to December 2020) were suspended and physical exercise classes resumed after a break of several months. This was achieved using a comparative cross-sectional survey of over-18-year-old students from the faculties of Sports Science and Physical Therapy at the University of Cadiz (UCA) in Spain. Quality of life was assessed using two types of questionnaires. The first covered quality of nutrition (PREDIMED), and the second assessed emotional impact (SF12). Physical activity level was estimated using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Of the 166 participants in this study, about two-thirds were men. Men had a better perception of their overall health quality than women. In addition, men had significantly fewer limitations in performing activities of daily living than their female counterparts. In contrast, female university students had better coping strategies, that is, they were better able to handle the problems of daily life and did so with more composure, attention, and concentration. These findings highlight the differences in post-release recovery between men and women and can be used to develop programs to promote better living standards and services to reduce gender disparities, which can ultimately improve quality of life.13 página
This work provides new Ar40-Ar39 geochronological data in submarine ankaramite rocks located in two distant points of Anaga (NE Tenerife): the submarine hydrothermally altered ankaramites of Punta Poyata area (NNW Anaga) and the ankaramitic pillow lavas at Barranco de Igueste (SE Anaga). The studied samples were collected from outcrops of the lowest stratigraphic levels throughout the volcanics that build up the Anaga massif. At Punta Poyata, two collected samples yielded an age of 12,2 ± 1,9 Ma and 13,0 ± 1,0 Ma. At Barranco de Igueste, sample results are of 12,7 ± 1,6 Ma and 9,7 ± 1,0 Ma. These data support the assumption that the Anaga massif began its subaerial growth earlier than that previously was supposed, most likely in the Mid-Miocene Instead of late Miocene as currently believed.Depto. de Geodinámica, Estratigrafía y PaleontologíaFac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEpu
Semiclassical theory of shot noise in ballistic n+-i-n+ semiconductor strucutres: relevance of Pauli and long range Coulomb correlations
We work out a semiclassical theory of shot noise in ballistic n+-i-n+
semiconductor structures aiming at studying two fundamental physical
correlations coming from Pauli exclusion principle and long range Coulomb
interaction. The theory provides a unifying scheme which, in addition to the
current-voltage characteristics, describes the suppression of shot noise due to
Pauli and Coulomb correlations in the whole range of system parameters and
applied bias. The whole scenario is summarized by a phase diagram in the plane
of two dimensionless variables related to the sample length and contact
chemical potential. Here different regions of physical interest can be
identified where only Coulomb or only Pauli correlations are active, or where
both are present with different relevance. The predictions of the theory are
proven to be fully corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. Title changed and Introduction rewritten.

Dynamical properties of liquid Al near melting. An orbital-free molecular dynamics study
The static and dynamic structure of liquid Al is studied using the orbital
free ab-initio molecular dynamics method. Two thermodynamic states along the
coexistence line are considered, namely T = 943 K and 1323 K for which X-ray
and neutron scattering data are available. A new kinetic energy functional,
which fulfills a number of physically relevant conditions is employed, along
with a local first principles pseudopotential. In addition to a comparison with
experiment, we also compare our ab-initio results with those obtained from
conventional molecular dynamics simulations using effective interionic pair
potentials derived from second order pseudopotential perturbation theory.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, submitted to PR
Suppression of non-Poissonian shot noise by Coulomb correlations in ballistic conductors
We investigate the current injection into a ballistic conductor under the
space-charge limited regime, when the distribution function of injected
carriers is an arbitrary function of energy F_c(epsilon). The analysis of the
coupled kinetic and Poisson equations shows that the injected current
fluctuations may be essentially suppressed by Coulomb correlations, and the
suppression level is determined by the shape of F_c(epsilon). This is in
contrast to the time-averaged quantities: the mean current and the spatial
profiles are shown to be insensitive to F_c(epsilon) in the leading-order terms
at high biases. The asymptotic high-bias behavior for the energy resolved
shot-noise suppression has been found for an arbitrary (non-Poissonian)
injection, which may suggest a new field of investigation on the optimization
of the injected energy profile to achieve the desired noise-suppression level.Comment: extended version 4 -> 8 pages, examples and figure adde
