Fabrication of AZ4562 refractive microlenses array for light enhancement on optical microsystems

This paper presents the fabrication of an array of high aspect ratio photoresist based refractive microlenses (ML) using photolithography and thermal reflow. First, and in order to evaluate and predict the MLs optical properties and physical dimensions, finite element analysis was done. These simulations helped to design the super high resolution chrome on soda lime glass photomask as well as the parameters for the lithographic processes. Then, an array of high aspect ratio structures (length 4.9 mm, width 30 μm and 5 μm spacing between adjacent structures) with 5 μm thickness were fabricated. The thermal reflow technique (using a hotplate) was applied and an array of MLs measuring 5 and 32 μm at the vertex and radius, respectively, was achieved. When the photoresist (PR) is heated up above its glass transition temperature, it melts and the surface tension effect causes the fabricated microstructure to obtain the spherical lens profile. The hotplate thermal reflow is simple and easy to control, thus permitting the fabrication of smooth and homogeneous surfaces essential for good quality refractive microlenses.This work was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology under the projects FCT/PTDC/EEA-ELC/109936/2009 and FCT/MITPT/ EDAM-SI/0025/2008

Advanced tools and techniques to add value to soil stabilization practice

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the advanced tools and techniques used for adding value to the soil stabilization practice. The tools presented involve advanced laboratory tests and modeling using codes and soft computing to evaluate the mechanical behavior of stabilized soils with cement, ranging from short-term to long-term behavior. More precisely, these tools are able to: 1. Predict the mechanical behavior of the stabilized soils over time from data obtained in the early ages saving time in laboratory tests; 2. Predict the mechanical behavior of the stabilized soils over time based on basic parameters of soil type and binder using historical accurate data, avoiding mechanical laboratory tests. 3. Controle químico de Ipomoea hederifolia em áreas de cana soca crua colhidas nas épocas seca e semiúmida.

Com os objetivos de estudar o controle de I. hederifolia (corda-de-viola) pelos herbicidas sulfentrazone (0,9 kg ha-1), amicarbazone (1,4 kg ha-1), imazapic (0,147 kg ha-1) e hexazinone + tebuthiuron (0,325 + 0,75 kg ha-1), aplicados em pré-emergência na época seca ou semiúmida; mesotrione isolado (0,192 kg ha-1) e em mistura (0,12 kg ha-1) com atrazine (1,5 kg ha-1) ou diuron + hexazinone (0,491 + 0,139 kg ha-1), aplicados em pós emergência na época úmida (em novembro); e a seletividade dos tratamentos químicos para cana-de-açúcar; cinco experimentos foram instalados na região de Catanduva - SP

Advances on the development of novel heterogeneous catalysts for transesterification of triglycerides in biodiesel

This paper describes experimental work done towards the search for more profitable and sustainable alternatives regarding biodiesel production, using heterogeneous catalysts instead of the conventional homogenous alkaline catalysts, such as NaOH, KOH or sodium methoxide, for the methanolysis reaction. This experimental work is a first stage on the development and optimization of new solid catalysts, able to produce biodiesel from vegetable oils. The heterogeneous catalytic process has many differences from the currently used in industry homogeneous process. The main advantage is that, it requires lower investment costs, since no need for separation steps of methanol/catalyst, biodiesel/catalyst and glycerine/catalyst. This work resulted in the selection of CaO and CaO modified with Li catalysts, which showed very good catalytic performances with high activity and stability. In fact FAME yields higher than 92% were observed in two consecutive reaction batches without expensive intermediate reactivation procedures. Therefore, those catalysts appear to be suitable for biodiesel production
