    The “Singapore Model” in Gaming: Applications in South Korea

    The gaming governance system in Singapore is a very well-known and internationally renowned model. Singapore began to launch their gaming regulation system in 2005 by establishing a national framework on gambling prior to opening two integrated resorts in the country in 2010 (Winslow, Cheok, & Subramaniam, 2015). In contrast, the South Korean “model” is much less renowned. Though there have been discussions about introducing full-scale integrated resorts, the government currently allows South Korean citizens to gamble in only one property - Kangwon Land (Research, 2016). However, Kangwon Land’s situation is controversial in South Korea, with concerns about problem gambling issues arising from the very beginning. The gambling addiction rate of South Korea in 2012 study conducted by National Gaming Control Commission, was 6.1%, which was significantly higher than that of Singapore which was only 0.2% in 2014 (though it should be noted, measurement differences are common in this field). This gambling addiction rate also appears to be high compared to some other countries such as the U.K. (2.5%), Australia (2.4%), and France (1.3%) (The Chosunilbo, 2012)

    The size of ships has increased notably over recent decades. The size of harbours and ports has however not grown in proportion. As a result ship manoeuvring in harbours and ports has become more problematic, and more of an art than a science. The ‘pivot point’ concept can be useful in analysing slow ship manoeuvring and has therefore been widely adopted by practitioners and training institutions. As a result many practitioners now routinely plan con-fined manoeuvring using the ‘pivot point’ concept. Traditionally the ‘pivot point’ concept has been defined in a number of contradictory and inaccurate ways leading to confusion and mystification. As a result many practitioners and trainers often rely on intuition to bridge the gap between reality and their flawed understanding of theory. In this presentation the theoretical aspect of the pivot point is reviewed and correct definitions put forward and applied to basic and ‘special’ ship’s manoeuvres

    Angiogenic and Neurotrophic Effects of Human Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Conditioned Medium for Erectile Dysfunction

    Department of Biomedical EngineeringA three-dimensional spheroid culture system to harvest conditioned medium (CM) from human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs) with high efficiency were introduced and investigated the therapeutic effects of hBM-MSC-CM on erectile dysfunction (ED). In order to harvest CM with higher protein concentration than CM harvested by conventional method in 2D culture system, a variable parameter study considering the culture conditions such as spheroid diameter and centrifugation time was performed. As a result, it was confirmed that CM harvested from 3D spheroid culture system had much more proteins than those cultured in 2D environment. In addition, the total protein concentration in CM increased in proportion to the centrifugation time using a centrifugal filter. Additionally, ELISA and secretome assay showed that CM contained growth factors that help in angiogenesis such as angiogenin (ANG) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and in nerve regeneration like glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Also, it was identified that angiogenic effects of CM contributing to tube, node and mesh formation of endothelial cells was proportional to the concentration of CM in vitro tube formation assay. Then, histomorphometric studies such as immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence were performed using the cavernous nerve (CN) injury rat model. In result, histomorphometric analysis showed that neural regeneration and vascular regeneration increased along with CM concentration. To sum up, we established an efficient method to obtain hBM-MSC-CM containing high concentration of growth factors, which is expected to be one of the promising methods of regenerative medicine for treating ED disease.clos

    Effects of field modulation on Aharonov-Bohm cages in a two-dimensional bipartite periodic lattice

    We study the effects of field modulation on the energy spectrum of an electron in a two-dimensional bipartite periodic lattice subject to a magnetic field. Dependence of the energy spectrum on both the period and the strength of field modulation is discussed in detail. Our main finding is that introducing field modulation drastically changes the energy spectrum and the localization properties of the system appearing in the absence of field modulation; the degeneracies induced by a uniform magnetic field are broken and the resultant energy spectrum shows a dispersive band structure, indicating that most of Aharonov-Bohm cages become unbounded. The effects of field modulation on the superconducting transition temperature and the critical current in a wire network with the same geometry are also discussed.Comment: 9 figures; To appear on Phys.
