Cost Efficiency in Greek Banking
TThis study uses the distribution free approach to investigate cost efficiency in a panel of Greek banks over 1993-1999, a period characterized by major changes in the banking sector brought about by gradual financial deregulation. These reforms were supposed to provide an opportunity to Greek banks to improve their efficiency and to enhance their competitiveness in view of ongoing financial integration in Europe and the introduction of the euro. The results obtained indicate that important cost X-inefficiencies are in place. Some evidence is provided that bank characteristics such as bank size, type of ownership and risk behaviour do play a role in explaining differences in measured inefficiencies. Scale economies are also examined and the findings indicate that the Greek banking industry experiences economies of scale, though they have declined throughout the observed period. Generative Design in Minecraft (GDMC), Settlement Generation Competition
This paper introduces the settlement generation competition for Minecraft,
the first part of the Generative Design in Minecraft challenge. The settlement
generation competition is about creating Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents
that can produce functional, aesthetically appealing and believable settlements
adapted to a given Minecraft map - ideally at a level that can compete with
human created designs. The aim of the competition is to advance procedural
content generation for games, especially in overcoming the challenges of
adaptive and holistic PCG. The paper introduces the technical details of the
challenge, but mostly focuses on what challenges this competition provides and

Lupus Nephritis: Clinical Picture, Histopathological Diagnosis, and Management
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can affect almost every organ of the body and presents with a great variety of clinical features. SLE effect on kidneys, mostly referred to as lupus nephritis, is of special interest for the rheumatologist and nephrologist for three reasons. First, lupus nephritis is one of the commonest types of organ involvement in this disorder, affecting as up to 45% of all patients with SLE. Second, it presents with a great variety of clinical and histopathological findings, and thus, therapy must be tailored accordingly. Third, it greatly affects the morbidity and mortality of SLE patients. Taking these facts into account, this chapter is centered on lupus nephritis from the perspective of the clinical nephrologist and renal pathologist. This chapter elaborates the diversity of clinical features of lupus nephritis, in relation to the different histopathological forms of the disease and the therapeutic options that are available to date, as well as the pathogenesis, natural history, and prognosis of patients with lupus nephritis

can be summarized, based on the
notions pre-existing in aspect-based summarization
and sentiment analysis. The

Inflammatory pseudotumor associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection
SummaryBackgroundInflammatory pseudotumor is a relatively rare entity; originally identified in the lung, it has been described in multiple extrapulmonary anatomic locations.Case reportWe report on the unusual case of an inflammatory pseudotumor associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, which was initially mistaken for a renal malignancy both in clinical and radiological settings. We additionally present three brief reviews concerning: (1) infectious agents postulated to induce morphological changes of an inflammatory pseudotumor; (2) mycobacterial pseudotumors; and (3) distinction from inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors of the renal pelvis.ConclusionsThe present case highlights the diagnostic importance of PCR-based detection of mycobacterial DNA in granulomatous tissue responses. It is of crucial importance that clinicians are aware of this unusual manifestation of mycobacterial infection to ensure that pertinent laboratory evaluation is employed and appropriate treatment is administered in order to avoid potential clinical implications

Mycotic pseudoaneurysms complicating renal transplantation: a case series and review of literature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Kidney transplantation can be complicated by infection and subsequent development of mycotic aneurysm, endangering the survival of the graft and the patient. Management of this condition in five cases is discussed, accompanied by a review of the relevant literature.</p> <p>Case presentations</p> <p>Five patients, three men 42-, 67- and 57-years-old and two women 55- and 21-years-old (mean age of 48 years), all Caucasians, developed a mycotic aneurysm in the region of the anastomosis between renal graft artery and iliac axes. Four patients presented with systemic fever and iliac fossa pain and one presented with hemorrhagic shock. Morphologic investigation by color doppler ultrasonography revealed a pseudoaneurysm at the anastomotic site. A combination of antibiotic therapy, surgery and interventional procedures was required as all kidney transplants had to be removed. No recurrence was recorded during the follow-up period.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A high index of suspicion is required for the timely diagnosis of a mycotic aneurysm; aggressive treatment with cover stents and/or surgical excision is necessary in order to prevent potentially fatal complications.</p
Optimal management of asymptomatic carotid stenosis in 2021: the jury is still out. An International, multispecialty, expert review and position statement
Objectives: The recommendations of international guidelines for the management of asymptomatic carotid stenosis (ACS) often vary considerably and extend from a conservative approach with risk factor modification and best medical treatment (BMT) alone, to a more aggressive approach with a carotid intervention plus BMT. The aim of the current multispecialty position statement is to reconcile the conflicting views on the topic. Materials and methods: A literature review was performed with a focus on data from recent studies. Results: Several clinical and imaging high-risk features have been identified that are associated with an increased long-term ipsilateral ischemic stroke risk in patients with ACS. Such high-risk clinical/imaging features include intraplaque hemorrhage, impaired cerebrovascular reserve, carotid plaque echolucency/ulceration/ neovascularization, a lipid-rich necrotic core, a thin or ruptured fibrous cap, silent brain infarction, a contralateral transient ischemic attack/stroke episode, male patients <75 years and microembolic signals on transcranial Doppler. There is growing evidence that 80-99% ACS indicate a higher stroke risk than 50-79% stenoses. Conclusions: Although aggressive risk factor control and BMT should be implemented in all ACS patients, several high-risk features that may increase the risk of a future cerebrovascular event are now documented. Consequently, some guidelines recommend a prophylactic carotid intervention in high-risk patients to prevent future cerebrovascular events. Until the results of the much-anticipated randomized controlled trials emerge, the jury is still out regarding the optimal management of ACS patients

Natural-based nanocomposites for bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine: a review
Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine has been providing exciting
technologies for the development of functional substitutes aimed to repair and
regenerate damaged tissues and organs. Inspired by the hierarchical nature of
bone, nanostructured biomaterials are gaining a singular attention for tissue
engineering, owing their ability to promote cell adhesion and proliferation, and
hence new bone growth, compared with conventional microsized materials.
Of particular interest are nanocomposites involving biopolymeric matrices and
bioactive nanosized fi llers. Biodegradability, high mechanical strength, and
osteointegration and formation of ligamentous tissue are properties required
for such materials. Biopolymers are advantageous due to their similarities with
extracellular matrices, specifi c degradation rates, and good biological performance.
By its turn, calcium phosphates possess favorable osteoconductivity,
resorbability, and biocompatibility. Herein, an overview on the available natural
polymer/calcium phosphate nanocomposite materials, their design, and properties
is presented. Scaffolds, hydrogels, and fi bers as biomimetic strategies for
tissue engineering, and processing methodologies are described. The specifi c
biological properties of the nanocomposites, as well as their interaction with
cells, including the use of bioactive molecules, are highlighted. Nanocomposites
in vivo studies using animal models are also reviewed and discussed.
