    Decadal decline in demersal fish biomass coincident with a prolonged drought and the introduction of an exotic starfish

    Between 1990 and 2011, Port Phillip Bay in southern Australia experienced 2 major ecological disturbances: a prolonged drought from 1997 to 2010, and the introduction of the invasive starfish, Asterias amurensis. The drought reduced land-based nitrogen inputs by 64%, and the biomass of A. amurensis in the deep centre of the bay peaked at 56% of the resident fish biomass in 2000. The impacts of these disturbances on fish were assessed using a demersal trawl time-series spanning 2 decades (1990 to 2011). The timing and spatial extent of changes to fish biomass were analysed using ANCOVA and change point analysis. During the drought, fish biomass declined by 69% in the deep centre of the bay, by 50% at intermediate depths, and showed no significant change around the shallow fringes. This spatial pattern is consistent with hydrodynamic modelling, which suggests that during the drought a greater proportion of the (lower) nitrogen input was retained near the coastal fringe. Most of the decline in fish biomass was attributed to the cumulative effects of reduced productivity during the 12 yr drought. However, declines in 3 species in the deep region were attributed to competition with A. amurensis. Each of these species exhibited high dietary overlap with A. amurensis and displayed sharp declines in biomass coinciding with the peak abundance of A. amurensis in 2000

    objective To measure the effect of androgens or aromatase activity as an index of androgen responsiveness in patients with androgen insensitivity design Genital skin fibroblasts were established in culture using primary skin explants obtained from normal males at the time of circumcision and from androgen insensitive patients who had surgery either for gonadectomy (complete androgen insensitivity syndrome) or for reconstruction of the external genitalia (partial androgen insensitivity syndrome) patients Foreskin samples were obtained at the time of circumcision in 27 normal males. Scrotal or labla majora skin was obtained at the time of surgery from 14 patients with the complete and 22 with the partial forms of the androgen insensitivity syndrome measurements Basal and stimulated levels of aromatase activity were measured in genital skin fibroblasts following preincubation with natural and synthetic, non-metabolizable androgens results Following a 48-hour preincubation with testosterone or dihydrotestosterone, there was a five to six-fold stimulation of aromatase activity in normal fibroblasts. Mibolerone, a synthetic androgen, produced similar results. The stimulatory effect was blocked by anti-androgens. Seven patients with partial androgen insensitivity, of whom four were either receptor deficient or showed a qualitative defect in androgen binding, had reduced mibolerone induced stimulation of aromatase activity. All ten patients with receptor negative complete androgen insensitivity had an absent response. There was no aromatase induction in a further three patients with complete androgen insensitivity who were receptor positive. Two siblings in the latter group had an exon deletion encoding for part of the DNA binding domain of the androgen receptor conclusions Androgens stimulate aromatase activity in genital skin fibroblasts from normals. The response is mediated via the androgen receptor and can be decreased or absent in patients with the androgen insensitivity syndrome. This may be a useful in-vitro marker of androgen responsiveness in such patient

    Kelp forest as a habitat for mobile epifauna: case study of Caprella septentrionalis

    Distribution and abundance of the amphipod Caprella septentrionalis in relation to environmental conditions and habitat preferences were investigated in a kelp forest in Hornsund, Spitsbergen. Three sampling sites differed in hydrodynamics, organic and inorganic suspension concentration, and sedimentation rates. None of these abiotic factors or species of a macroalgal host appeared to have a significant influence on C. septentrionalis abundance and size range. An apparent preference towards the blade parts of the algal thalli was observed. These results support the idea of C. septentrionalis as a generalist Arctic–boreal species that takes advantage of the protective nature of kelp forests
