Topological Floquet engineering of twisted bilayer graphene
We investigate the topological properties of Floquet-engineered twisted bilayer graphene above the so-called magic angle driven by circularly polarized laser pulses. Employing a full Moiré-unit-cell tight-binding Hamiltonian based on first-principles electronic structure, we show that the band topology in the bilayer, at twisting angles above 1.05∘, essentially corresponds to the one of single-layer graphene. However, the ability to open topologically trivial gaps in this system by a bias voltage between the layers enables the full topological phase diagram to be explored, which is not possible in single-layer graphene. Circularly polarized light induces a transition to a topologically nontrivial Floquet band structure with the Berry curvature analogous to a Chern insulator. Importantly, the twisting allows for tuning electronic energy scales, which implies that the electronic bandwidth can be tailored to match realistic driving frequencies in the ultraviolet or midinfrared photon-energy regimes. This implies that Moiré superlattices are an ideal playground for combining twistronics, Floquet engineering, and strongly interacting regimes out of thermal equilibrium
Elastic response of [111]-tunneling impurities
We study the dynamic response of a [111] quantum impurity, such as lithium or
cyanide in alkali halides, with respect to an external field coupling to the
elastic quadrupole moment. Because of the particular level structure of a
eight-state system on a cubic site, the elastic response function shows a
biexponential relaxation feature and a van Vleck type contribution with a
resonance frequency that is twice the tunnel frequency . This
basically differs from the dielectric response that does not show relaxation.
Moreover, we show that the elastic response of a [111] impurity cannot be
reduced to that of a two-level system. In the experimental part, we report on
recent sound velocity and internal friction measurements on KCl doped with
cyanide at various concentrations. At low doping (45 ppm) we find the dynamics
of a single [111] impurity, whereas at higher concentrations (4700 ppm) the
elastic response rather indicates strongly correlated defects. Our theoretical
model provides a good description of the temperature dependence of
and at low doping, in particular the relaxation peaks, the absolute
values of the amplitude, and the resonant contributions. From our fits we
obtain the value of the elastic deformation potential eV.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
Effect of Mechanical Strain on the Optical Properties of Nodal-Line Semimetal ZrSiS
Optical properties of nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS are studied using first-principles calculations. Frequency-independent optical conductivity is a fingerprint of the infrared optical response in ZrSiS. It is found that this characteristic feature is robust with respect to uniaxial compressive strain of up to 10 GPa, yet with the flat region being narrowed with increasing strain. Upon uniaxial tensile stress of 2 GPa, the Fermi surface undergoes a Lifshitz transition accompanied by a weakening of the interband screening, which reduces the spectral weight of infrared excitations. It is also shown that the high-energy region is characterized by low-loss plasma excitations at ≈20 eV with essentially anisotropic dispersion. Strongly anisotropic dielectric properties suggest the existence of a hyperbolic regime for plasmons in the deep ultraviolet range. Although the frequencies of high-energy plasmons are virtually unaffected by external uniaxial deformation, their dispersion can be effectively tuned by strain. © 2019 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Probabilistic forecasts: scoring rules and their decomposition and diagrammatic representation via Bregman divergences
A scoring rule is a device for evaluation of forecasts that are given in terms of the probability of an event. In this article we will restrict our attention to binary forecasts. We may think of a scoring rule as a penalty attached to a forecast after the event has been observed. Thus a relatively small penalty will accrue if a high probability forecast that an event will occur is followed by occurrence of the event. On the other hand, a relatively large penalty will accrue if this forecast is followed by non-occurrence of the event. Meteorologists have been foremost in developing scoring rules for the evaluation of probabilistic forecasts. Here we use a published meteorological data set to illustrate diagrammatically the Brier score and the divergence score, and their statistical decompositions, as examples of Bregman divergences. In writing this article, we have in mind environmental scientists and modellers for whom meteorological factors are important drivers of biological, physical and chemical processes of interest. In this context, we briefly draw attention to the potential for probabilistic forecasting of the within-season component of nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils
A Systems Approach to Assessing the Viability of Grazing Legume Systems Across Europe
Forage legumes are important in grassland farming throughout much of the world because of their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, and hence they are expected to play an increasingly prominent role in low- input grazing farming systems in Europe. Nevertheless, the socio-economic impact of the adoption of the new legume based grazing technologies have been poorly researched (Rochon et al., 2004). Thus a methodology has been developed to:
* Assess the on-farm costs and benefits of including different legume crops for animal production;* Determine the types of management systems and environmental conditions under which forage legumes may play a major part as grazing crops in production systems in Europe;* and Determine the wider social, economic and environmental implication of widespread adoption of the new technologies
The Qualified Legal Compliance Committee: Using the Attorney Conduct Rules to Restructure the Board of Directors
The Securities and Exchange Commission introduced a new corporate governance structure, the qualified legal compliance committee, as part of the professional standards of conduct for attorneys mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. QLCCs are consistent with the Commission\u27s general approach to improving corporate governance through specialized committees of independent directors. This Article suggests, however, that assessing the benefits and costs of creating QLCCs may be more complex than is initially apparent. Importantly, QLCCs are unlikely to be effective in the absence of incentives for active director monitoring. This Article concludes by considering three ways of increasing these incentives
A Model of Tuberculosis Screening for Pregnant Women in Resource-Limited Settings Using Xpert MTB/RIF
Timely diagnosis and treatment of maternal tuberculosis (TB) is important to reduce morbidity and mortality for both the mother and child, particularly in women who are coinfected with HIV. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the integration of TB/HIV screening into antenatal services but available diagnostic tools are slow and insensitive, resulting in delays in treatment initiation. Recently the WHO endorsed Xpert MTB/RIF, a highly sensitive, real-time PCR assay for Mycobacterium tuberculosis that simultaneously detects rifampicin resistance directly from sputum and provides results within 100 minutes. We propose a model for same-day TB screening and diagnosis of all pregnant women at antenatal care using Xpert MTB/RIF. Pilot studies are urgently required to evaluate strategies for the integration of TB screening into antenatal clinics using new diagnostic technologies
