    Epidemiological and some clinical characteristics of neuroblastoma in Mexican children (1996–2005)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Neuroblastoma (NB) is the principal tumor of the sympathetic nervous system in children under one year of age. The incidence in developed countries is greater than that in developing countries. The aim of this article is to present the epidemiological and some clinical characteristics of Mexican children with NB.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A population-based, prolective study, with data obtained from the Childhood Cancer Registry of the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social. Statistical analysis: The simple frequencies of the variables of the study and the annual average incidence (per 1,000,000 children/years) by age and sex were obtained. The trend was evaluated by calculating the annual percentage of change. The curves of Kaplan-Meyer were employed for the survival rate and the log-rank test was used to compare the curves.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of a total of 2,758 children with cancer registered during the period from 1996–2005, 72 (2.6%) were identified as having Group IV, defined according to the International Classification of Childhood Cancer. The incidence for NB was 3.8 per 1,000,000 children/year; NB was highest in the group of children under one year of age, followed by the group of children between the ages 1–4 years (18.5 and 5.4 per 1,000,000 children/years, respectively). The male/female ratio was 1.1 and there was no trend toward an increase. The time of diagnosis was 26 days (median), but varied according to the stage at diagnosis. Stages III and IV were presented in 88% of the cases. There was no association between the stage, the age at time of diagnosis, or the histological pattern. The overall five-year survival rate was 64%; the patients with stage I, II, III, or IVs did not die; and the five-year survival rate of cases in Stage IV was 40%.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It is possible that the low incidence of neuroblastoma in Mexican children is due to the difficulty in diagnosing the cases with the best prognosis, some of which could have had spontaneous regression. There was no trend to an increase; the majority of the cases were diagnosed in the advanced stages; and the overall five-years survival rate was similar to that for developed countries.</p

    The Distribution and Ages of Star Clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud: Constraints on the Interaction History of the Magellanic Clouds

    International audienceWe present a new study of the spatial distribution and ages of the star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). To detect and estimate the ages of the star clusters we rely on the new fully automated method developed by Bitsakis et al. Our code detects 1319 star clusters in the central 18 deg 2 of the SMC we surveyed (1108 of which have never been reported before). The age distribution of those clusters suggests enhanced cluster formation around 240 Myr ago. It also implies significant differences in the cluster distribution of the bar with respect to the rest of the galaxy, with the younger clusters being predominantly located in the bar. Having used the same setup, and data from the same surveys as for our previous study of the LMC, we are able to robustly compare the cluster properties between the two galaxies. Our results suggest that the bulk of the clusters in both galaxies were formed approximately 300 Myr ago, probably during a direct collision between the two galaxies. On the other hand, the locations of the young (50 Myr) clusters in both Magellanic Clouds, found where their bars join the H I arms, suggest that cluster formation in those regions is a result of internal dynamical processes. Finally, we discuss the potential causes of the apparent outside-in quenching of cluster formation that we observe in the SMC. Our findings are consistent with an evolutionary scheme where the interactions between the Magellanic Clouds constitute the major mechanism driving their overall evolution

    Acute lichenoid and varioliform pityriasis in a pediatric patient

    Background: Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) is a rare dermatosis recognized as a benign condition of unknown etiopathogenesis. It is more common in pediatric patients and young adults and is characterized by multiple small or large erythematous plaques spread over the trunk and extremities. Case report: We describe the case of a 5-year-old male, previously healthy, with multiple erythematous lesions that disappeared leaving hypopigmented macules. The biopsy reported histological changes suggestive of mycosis fungoides. After a second revision of lamellae in this hospital, lymphocytic vasculitis (LV) with focal epidermal necrosis consistent with acute pityriasis lichenoides (PL) was identified. Conclusions: The existing knowledge about PLEVA lacks a consensus in specifying its classification, etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment, so this clinical condition represents a medical challenge. The diagnosis is made by clinical suspicion and confirmed by histology. The objective of this article was to report a case of PLEVA with an atypical presentation due to its histopathological findings, being the first report showing LV in children, as well as a review of the literature

    [Social network and social support among poor elderly ill in Guadalajara, Mexico]

    This paper examines social networks and social support among poor elderly ill in Guadalajara, Mexico. We interviewed 40 hospitalized elderly patients. The mean size of social networks was 7.5, basically involving women, multiple generations, and members of the extended family. Emotional support was more frequent than other types of social support. Elderly women had larger social networks and received more social support than men. Married elderly also had larger social networks and more social support than single patients. There were no differences between age and living arrangements with social networks and social support. Future studies are needed on the social and cultural environment of social support for the elderly

    A Novel Method to Automatically Detect and Measure the Ages of Star Clusters in Nearby Galaxies: Application to the Large Magellanic Cloud

    We present our new, fully automated method to detect and measure the ages of star clusters in nearby galaxies, where individual stars can be resolved. The method relies purely on statistical analysis of observations and Monte-Carlo simulations to define stellar overdensities in the data. It decontaminates the cluster color-magnitude diagrams and, using a revised version of the Bayesian isochrone fitting code of Ramirez-Siordia et al., estimates the ages of the clusters. Comparisons of our estimates with those from other surveys show the superiority of our method to extract and measure the ages of star clusters, even in the most crowded fields. An application of our method is shown for the high-resolution, multiband imaging of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We detect 4850 clusters in the 7 deg(2) we surveyed, 3451 of which have not been reported before. Our findings suggest multiple epochs of star cluster formation, with the most probable occurring similar to 310 Myr ago. Several of these events are consistent with the epochs of the interactions among the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, and the Galaxy, as predicted by N-body numerical simulations.     Chaotic Cryptosystem for Selective Encryption of Faces in Photographs

    In this article, a safe communication system is proposed that implements one or more portable devices denominated SBC (single-board computers), with which photographs are taken and that later utilizes the OpenCV Library for the detection and identification of the faces that appear in them. Subsequently, it consults the information in a stored database, whether locally in SBC or in a remote server, to verify that the faces should be coded, and it encrypts these, implementing a new cryptosystem that executes mathematical models to generate chaotic orbits, one of which is used for application on two occasions the technique of diffusion with the purpose of carrying out a small change in one of the pixels of the image, generating very different cryptograms. In addition, in order to make a safer system, it implements other chaotic orbits during the technique of confusion. With the purpose of verifying the robustness of the encryption algorithm, a statistical analysis is performed employing histograms, horizontal, vertical, and diagonal correlation diagrams, entropy, number of pixel change rate (NPCR), unified average change intensity (UACI), sensitivity of the key, encryption quality analysis, and the avalanche effect. The cryptosystem is very robust in that it generates highly disordered cryptograms, supports differential attacks, and in addition is highly sensitive to changes in the pixels as well as in the encrypted keys
