Educating Patients on Cannabidiol (CBD)
As the popularity of cannabidiol (CBD) increases, more patients are interested in trying a natural adjunct to more standard medications. But with no current FDA oversight, an estimated 70% of CBD products could be mislabeled. In Vermont, federal regulation requires hemp products to contain less than 0.3% THC, but this has only been tested one time at one location since the 2018 Farm Bill was passed. The goal of this project was to address common questions, recommend specific dosing, identify what to look for when purchasing, and list local and online resources for patients about CBD. Effort of spanwise variation of turbulence on the normal acceleration of airplanes with small span relative to turbulence scale
A rigid airplane with an unswept wing is analyzed. The results show that the power spectrum, relative to that for a one-dimensional turbulence field, is significantly attenuated at the higher frequencies even for airplanes with arbitrarily small ratios of span to scale of turbulence. This attenuation is described by a simple weighting function of frequency that depends only on aspect ratio. The weighting function, together with the attenuation due to the unsteady flow of gust penetration, allows the determination of the average rate of zero crossings for airplanes having very small spans without recourse to an integral truncation which is often required in calculations based on a one-dimensional turbulence field
A survey of active controls benefits to supersonic transports
Results are drawn from studies of the impact of advanced technologies on the design of an arrow-wing configuration. Information presented includes estimated benefits, effects of combinations of active control concepts, and constraints. Emphasis is placed on characteristics that are uniquely related to a large airframe featuring a slender body with a fixed wing of low aspect ratio, high sweep, and small thickness ratio
XMM-Newton observations of three poor clusters: Similarity in dark matter and entropy profiles down to low mass
(Abridged) We present an analysis of the mass and entropy profiles of three
poor clusters (A1991, A2717 and MKW9) observed with XMM-Newton. The clusters
have similar temperatures (kT=2.65, 2.53 and 2.58 keV), and similar redshifts
(0.04 < z < 0.06). We trace the surface brightness, temperature, entropy and
integrated mass profiles up to 0.5 (0.35 for MKW9) of the virial radius
(r_200). The integrated mass profiles are very similar in physical units and
are reasonably well fitted with the NFW mass model with concentration
parameters of c_200=4-6 and M_200=1.2-1.6 X 10^14 h_70^-1 \msun. The entropy
profiles are similar at large scale, but there is some scatter in the central
region (r<50 kpc). None of the clusters has an isentropic core. Including XMM
data on A1983 (kT=2.2 keV), and A1413 (kT = 6.5 keV), we discuss the structural
and scaling properties of cluster mass and entropy profiles. The scaled mass
profiles display <20% dispersion in the 0.05 - 0.5 r_200 radial range. The
c_200 parameters of these clusters, and other values from the literature, are
fully consistent with the c_200 - M_200 relation derived from simulations. The
dispersion in scaled entropy profiles is small, implying self-similarity down
to low mass (kT ~2 keV), and is reduced by 30-40% (to ~20%) if we use the
empirical relation S \propto T^0.65 instead of the standard self-similar
relation, S \propto T. The mean scaled profile is well fitted by a power law
for 0.05 < r_200 < 0.5, with a slope slightly lower than expected from pure
shock heating (\alpha = 0.94+/-0.14), and a normalisation at 0.1 r_200
consistent with previous studies. The gas history thus likely depends both on
gravitational processes and the interplay between cooling and various galaxy

Marriages of Convenience and Other Trade-offs: Exploring the Ambivalent Nature of Organizational Relationships
Depictions of organizational life have ranged from depictions of extreme alienation (Erikson, 1986) to extreme commitment (Butterfield, 1985; Kunda, 1992). However, the emotional portrait of workers may not be so easily captured by simple shades of positive or negative feelings. Rather, the rapid rate of change, the ever-increasing complexity, and the seeming incompleteness characteristic of social life in the twentieth century suggest that this is an "age of ambivalence" (Weigert & Franks, 1989). In the work place, individuals confront the realities of hyper-competitive market places, technologically mediated relationships, empowerment, and economic insecurity. These and other issues have become embedded in the social structure of organizations and affect the bonds between individuals and between individuals and their organization. The result, we argue, is that individuals often experience ambivalence: "overlapping approach-avoidance tendencies" (Sincoff, 1990) characterized by "mixed feelings" about their work groups and organizations. Despite the fact that ambivalence is inherent in modern life, and is a central concept in many social sciences (cf. Boehm, 1989; Freud, 1950/1920; Bowlby, 1982; Merton, 1976; Smelser, 1998), our understanding of ambivalence in organizations is limited. In this chapter, we examine the topic of emotional ambivalence in the context of work relationships. We have four major goals in this regard: (1) to briefly review the concept of ambivalence, especially emotional ambivalence; (2) to argue for the prevalence of ambivalence in individuals' relationships both with and in organizations; (3) to propose two major sources of ambivalence in these relationships; and (4) to offer a typology of responses that individuals use to cope with emotional ambivalence. To illustrate these goals, we draw upon two different cases, rural doctors whose practices have been recently bought out by a large managed care organization (referred to hereafter as HealthCo), and employees at bank call-centers. These cases reveal two types of ambivalent relationships in organizations. The case of the rural doctors illustrates how individuals can become ambivalent with their employing organization. Thus, it illustrates an individuals' ambivalence with their collective. The call-center, by contrast, primarily illustrates ambivalent relationships between bank call-center employees and co-workers, as well as between employees and customers. Thus, it shows us ambivalent relationships within (rather than with) an organization. We believe that both types of ambivalent relationships (both with and within) are likely to be common in modern organizations.
Digital adaptive controllers for VTOL vehicles. Volume 1: Concept evaluation
A digital self-adaptive flight control system was developed for flight test in the VTOL approach and landing technology (VALT) research aircraft (a modified CH-47 helicopter). The control laws accept commands from an automatic on-board guidance system. The primary objective of the control laws is to provide good command-following with a minimum cross-axis response. Three attitudes and vertical velocity are separately commanded. Adaptation of the control laws is based on information from rate and attitude gyros and a vertical velocity measurement. The final design resulted from a comparison of two different adaptive concepts--one based on explicit parameter estimates from a real-time maximum-likelihood estimation algorithm, the other based on an implicit model reference adaptive system. The VTOL approach and landing test (VALT) adaptive software is documented. Two self-adaptive algorithms, one based on an implicit model reference design and the other on an explicit parameter estimation technique were evaluated. The organization of the software, user options, and a nominal set of input data are presented along with a flow chart and program listing of each algorithm
Reforming Australian Higher Education: From Crisis to Excellence?
Reforms in Australian higher education in the 1980s and 1990s have led to declining levels of real government funding to universities, particularly in the late 1990s, requiring universities to develop alternative revenue sources. In 2001, the Senate released a report âUniversities in Crisisâ which found government funding to be inadequate. Despite the consistent denials by the Australian Government, this was perceived by many others as a sector in crisis.
The Australian Government responded to claims of deteriorating standards with the âCrossroadsâ Ministerial papers and has reasserted its aim of achieving âworld classâ universities in Australia.
Are the recent responses of the Government likely to enhance excellence in higher education? What does âexcellentâ mean to various higher education stakeholders and how do they perceive the current response of Australiaâs higher education system to these challenges? These issues will be analysed in the context of the Governmentâs reforms as detailed in the âCrossroadsâ papers. The authors conclude that the Australian Governmentâs decisions in relation to the levels and sources of funding for Australiaâs universities will have future implications for the nationâs social capital
Calibration of the galaxy cluster M_500-Y_X relation with XMM-Newton
The quantity Y_ X, the product of the X-ray temperature T_ X and gas mass M_
g, has recently been proposed as a robust low-scatter mass indicator for galaxy
clusters. Using precise measurements from XMM-Newton data of a sample of 10
relaxed nearby clusters, spanning a Y_ X range of 10^13 -10^15 M_sun keV, we
investigate the M_500-Y_ X relation. The M_500 - Y_ X data exhibit a power law
relation with slope alpha=0.548 \pm 0.027, close to the self-similar value
(3/5) and independent of the mass range considered. However, the normalisation
is \sim 20% below the prediction from numerical simulations including cooling
and galaxy feedback. We discuss two effects that could contribute to the
normalisation offset: an underestimate of the true mass due to the HE
assumption used in X-ray mass estimates, and an underestimate of the hot gas
mass fraction in the simulations. A comparison of the functional form and
scatter of the relations between various observables and the mass suggest that
Y_ X may indeed be a better mass proxy than T_ X or M_g,500.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&
