Absolute determination of D_s branching ratios and f_{D_s} extraction at a neutrino factory
A method for a direct measurement of the exclusive D_s branching ratios and
of the decay constant f_{D_s} with a systematical error better than 5% is
presented. The approach is based on the peculiar vertex topology of the
anti-neutrino induced diffractive charm events. The statistical accuracy
achievable with a neutrino factory is estimated
A Novel Muco-Gingival Approach for Immediate Implant Placement to Obtain Soft- and Hard-Tissue Augmentation
The aim of this article is to describe a novel approach combining muco-gingival, regenerative and prosthetics concepts for immediate implant insertion that overcomes the limits traditionally considered as contraindications for Type 1 flapless implant positioning, simultaneously obtaining soft- and hard-tissue augmentation. After pre-surgical CBCT evaluation, the surgical technique consisted in the execution of a lateral-approach coronally advanced envelope flap, with oblique submarginal interproximal incisions directed towards the flap’s center of rotation (the tooth to be extracted); after buccal-flap elevation, the atraumatic extraction of the tooth was performed. Following guided implant insertion, a mixture of biomaterial and autologous bone was placed, stabilized by a pericardium membrane and a connective-tissue graft sutured in the inner aspect of the buccal flap. The peri-implant soft tissues were conditioned with a provisional crown until the shape and position for the mucosal scallop to resemble the gingival margin of the adjacent corresponding tooth were obtained; then, the definitive screw-retained restoration was placed. Within the limitations of this case report, the proposed immediate implant placement approach combining CTG application and buccal bone regeneration showed the possibility of obtaining 1-year-follow-up implant success, stable bone level, good esthetic results and high patient satisfaction
Surgical management of gingival recession using autogenous soft tissue grafts
One of the chief goals of periodontal plastic surgery is establishment of ideal pink esthetics through the reconstruction of gingival recessions. A gold standard treatment approach for coverage of gingival recession with predictable esthetic outcomes is the transplantation of autogenous soft tissue grafts. Various surgical techniques can be used in combination with autogenous soft tissue grafts for gingival recession coverage
Diagnostic challenges of an incidental finding: case report of definitely-congenital glioblastoma multiforme in a very preterm infant
Background: Congenital brain tumors are extremely rare in the neonatal population, and often associated with a poor prognosis. The diagnostic suspicion is often aroused at antenatal scans or postnatally, if clinical signs and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure become evident. We present a case of definitely congenital glioblastoma multiforme incidentally diagnosed in a preterm infant, aiming to raise clinical awareness on this condition and to highlight the challenges of the related diagnostic work-up. Case presentation: This female infant was born at 31 weeks’ gestation after an uneventful pregnancy. No abnormalities were detected at antenatal ultrasound scans and genetic tests. Head circumference at birth was on the 25th centile. A routine brain ultrasound scan performed on day 1 revealed a large, inhomogeneous lesion in the right cerebral hemisphere, with contralateral midline shift, which was confirmed by brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Eye fundus and routine blood exams, including platelets count, coagulation screening and C-reactive protein, were normal. Given the high risk of complications, surgical biopsy of the lesion was temporarily hold and a daily sonographic follow-up was undertaken. Although head circumference growth was steady on the 25th centile, progressive changes of the lesion were detected by cranial ultrasound. The repeat MRI scans showed a significant enlargement of the mass, with contralateral midline shift and signs of intralesional and intraventricular bleeding. In view of this worsening, surgical resection was performed. The histological examination of the lesion biopsy documented a GFAP+ highly cellular neoplasm, with no mutation on SMARCB1 gene. At the molecular analysis, mutations on IDH and H3F3A genes were absent, whereas MGMT promoter was unmethylated. The diagnosis was grade IV glioblastoma IDH wild-type. Conclusions: Congenital glioblastoma multiforme is an extremely rare but highly aggressive neoplasm. Since intralesional biopsy is not often feasible in affected neonates, knowledge of the associated clinical and neuroradiological features is particularly important, as they can also add useful information on the neoplasm behavior. Specimens from open surgical resection allow to perform a definite histological analysis and an extended molecular characterization, with relevant prognostic implications
Eight weddings and six funerals: An fMRI study on autobiographical memories
\u201cAutobiographical memory\u201d (AM) refers to remote memories from one's own life. Previous neuroimaging studies have highlighted that voluntary retrieval processes from AM involve different forms of memory and cognitive functions. Thus, a complex and widespread brain functional network has been found to support AM. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study used a multivariate approach to determine whether neural activity within the AM circuit would recognize memories of real autobiographical events, and to evaluate individual differences in the recruitment of this network. Fourteen right-handed females took part in the study. During scanning, subjects were presented with sentences representing a detail of a highly emotional real event (positive or negative) and were asked to indicate whether the sentence described something that had or had not really happened to them. Group analysis showed a set of cortical areas able to discriminate the truthfulness of the recalled events: medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate/retrosplenial cortex, precuneus, bilateral angular, superior frontal gyri, and early visual cortical areas. Single-subject results showed that the decoding occurred at different time points. No differences were found between recalling a positive or a negative event. Our results show that the entire AM network is engaged in monitoring the veracity of AMs. This process is not affected by the emotional valence of the experience but rather by individual differences in cognitive strategies used to retrieve AMs
Neutrino tomography - Learning about the Earth's interior using the propagation of neutrinos
Because the propagation of neutrinos is affected by the presence of Earth
matter, it opens new possibilities to probe the Earth's interior. Different
approaches range from techniques based upon the interaction of high energy
(above TeV) neutrinos with Earth matter, to methods using the MSW effect on the
neutrino oscillations of low energy (MeV to GeV) neutrinos. In principle,
neutrinos from many different sources (sun, atmosphere, supernovae, beams etc.)
can be used. In this talk, we summarize and compare different approaches with
an emphasis on more recent developments. In addition, we point out other
geophysical aspects relevant for neutrino oscillations.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures. Proceedings of ``Neutrino sciences 2005:

Acellular dermal matrix and coronally advanced flap or tunnel technique in the treatment of multiple adjacent gingival recessions. A 12-year follow-up from a randomized clinical trial
AimTo evaluate the long-term outcomes of Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) with Coronally Advanced Flap (CAF) or Tunnel technique (TUN) in the treatment of multiple adjacent gingival recessions (MAGRs).Material and methodsNineteen of the original 24 patients contributing to a total number of 33 sites for CAF and 34 for TUN were available for the 12 years follow-up examination. Recession depth, mean root coverage (mRC), keratinized tissue width (KTW), gingival thickness (GT) were evaluated and compared with baseline values and 6-months results. Regression analysis was performed to identify factors related to the stability of the gingival margin.ResultsA highly significant drop in mRC was observed for both groups from the 6 months timepoint to the 12 years recall (p  .05). KTW - 2 mm and GT - 1.2 mm at 6-months were two predictors for stability of the gingival margin (p = .03 and p = .01, respectively).ConclusionsA significant relapse of the gingival margin of MAGRs treated with CAF or TUN + ADM was observed after 12 years.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/151340/1/jcpe13163_am.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/151340/2/jcpe13163.pd
Signals for strange quark contributions to the neutrino (antineutrino) scattering in quasi-elastic region
Strange quark contributions to the neutrino (antineutrino) scattering are
investigated on the elastic neutrino-nucleon scattering and the
neutrino-nucleus scattering for 12C target in the quasi-elastic region on the
incident energy of 500 MeV, within the framework of a relativistic single
particle model. For the neutrino-nucleus scattering, the effects of final state
interaction for the knocked-out nucleon are included by a relativistic optical
potential. In the cross sections we found some cancellations of the strange
quark contributions between the knocked-out protons and neutrons. Consequently,
the asymmetries between the incident neutrino and antineutrino which is the
ratio of neutral current to charged current, and the difference between the
asymmetries are shown to be able to yield more feasible quantities for the
strangeness effects. In order to explicitly display importance of the
cancellations, results of the exclusive reaction 16O(\nu, \nu' p) are
additionally presented for detecting the strangeness effects.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
