Compact star clusters of the LMC HII region N11C
Based on imaging and spectroscopy obtained at the ESO NTT telescope and using
an efficient image analysis algorithm, we study the core of the LMC OB
association LH13, particularly the two compact stellar clusters Sk-6641 and HNT
in the HII, region N11C. We resolve Sk-6641 into 15 components and for the
first time the HNT cluster into 70 stars, and derive photometry for the
members. Moreover, from medium resolution spectroscopy we determine the
spectral types for sixteen stars in N11C. We compare the color-magnitude
diagrams of the clusters with that of the field stars and discuss the cluster
ages. With an age of ~100 Myr, the HNT cluster appears significantly older than
the very young (< 5 Myr) Sk-6641 starburst. We suggest that most of the `field'
O-stars in the core of N11C have actually been ejected from Sk-6641 through
dynamical interactions in the compact cluster. The properties of the Sk-6641
and HNT clusters suggest that we are viewing different star formation regions
lying at different distances along the same line of sight.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
The atypical emission-line star Hen3-209
We analyse observations, spanning 15 years, dedicated to the extreme
emission-line object Hen3-209. Our photometric data indicate that the
luminosity of the star undergoes marked variations with a peak-to-peak
amplitude of 0.65mag. These variations are recurrent, with a period of
16.093+-0.005d. The spectrum of Hen3-209 is peculiar with many different lines
(HI, HeI, FeII,...) showing P Cygni profiles. The line profiles are apparently
changing in harmony with the photometry. The spectrum also contains [OIII]
lines that display a saddle profile topped by three peaks, with a maximum
separation of about 600km/s. Hen3-209 is most likely an evolved luminous object
suffering from mass ejection events and maybe belonging to a binary system.Comment: 6p, 5 fig, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Probing viscoelastic properties of a thin polymer film sheared between a beads layer and quartz crystal resonator
We report measurements of viscoelastic properties of thin polymer films of
10-100 nm at the MHz range. These thin films are confined between a quartz
crystal resonator and a millimetric bead layer, producing an increase of both
resonance frequency and dissipation of the quartz resonator. The shear modulus
and dynamic viscosity of thin films extracted from these measurements are
consistent with the bulk values of the polymer. This modified quartz resonator
provides an easily realizable and effective tool for probing the rheological
properties of thin films at ambient environment.Comment: submitted to ap

Palomar 13: a velocity dispersion inflated by binaries ?
Recently, combining radial velocities from Keck/HIRES echelle spectra with
published proper motion membership probabilities, Cote et al (2002) observed a
sample of 21 stars, probable members of Palomar 13, a globular cluster in the
Galactic halo. Their projected velocity dispersion sigma_p = 2.2 +/-0.4 km/s
gives a mass-to-light ratio M/L_V = 40 +24/-17, about one order of magnitude
larger than the usual estimate for globular clusters. We present here radial
velocities measured from three different CCD frames of commissioning
observations obtained with the new ESO/VLT instrument FLAMES (Fibre Large Array
Multi Element Spectrograph). From these data, now publicly available, we
measure the homogeneous radial velocities of eight probable members of this
globular cluster. A new projected velocity dispersion sigma_p = 0.6-0.9 +/-0.3
km/s implies Palomar 13 mass-to-light ratio M/L_V = 3-7, similar to the usual
value for globular clusters. We discuss briefly the two most obvious reasons
for the previous unusual mass-to-light ratio finding: binaries, now clearly
detected, and more homogeneous data from the multi-fibre FLAMES spectrograph.Comment: 9 pages, 2 Postscript figure
FUSE observations of G226-29: First detection of the H_2 quasi-molecular satellite at 1150A
We present new FUV observations of the pulsating DA white dwarf G226-29
obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). This ZZ Ceti
star is the brightest one of its class and the coolest white dwarf observed by
FUSE. We report the first detection of the broad quasi-molecular
collision-induced satellite of Ly-beta at 1150 A, an absorption feature that is
due to transitions which take place during close collisions of hydrogen atoms.
The physical interpretation of this feature is based on recent progress of the
line broadening theory of the far wing of Ly-beta. This predicted feature had

The Herschel view of the nebula around the luminous blue variable star AG Carinae
Far-infrared Herschel PACS imaging and spectroscopic observations of the
nebula around the luminous blue variable (LBV) star AG Car have been obtained
along with optical imaging in the Halpha+[NII] filter. In the infrared light,
the nebula appears as a clumpy ring shell that extends up to 1.2 pc with an
inner radius of 0.4 pc. It coincides with the Halpha nebula, but extends
further out. Dust modeling of the nebula was performed and indicates the
presence of large grains. The dust mass is estimated to be ~ 0.2 Msun. The
infrared spectrum of the nebula consists of forbidden emission lines over a
dust continuum. Apart from ionized gas, these lines also indicate the existence
of neutral gas in a photodissociation region that surrounds the ionized region.
The abundance ratios point towards enrichment by processed material. The total
mass of the nebula ejected from the central star amounts to ~ 15 Msun, assuming
a dust-to-gas ratio typical of LBVs. The abundances and the mass-loss rate were
used to constrain the evolutionary path of the central star and the epoch at
which the nebula was ejected, with the help of available evolutionary models.
This suggests an ejection during a cool LBV phase for a star of ~ 55 Msun with

initial correlations and show that it is assured only when a joint dynamics is

Abundances of lithium, oxygen, and sodium in the turn-off stars of Galactic globular cluster 47 Tuc
We aim to determine abundances of Li, O and Na in a sample of of 110 turn-off
(TO) stars, in order to study the evolution of light elements in this cluster
and to put our results in perspective with observations of other globular and
open clusters, as well as with field stars. We use medium resolution spectra
obtained with the GIRAFFE spectrograph at the ESO 8.2m Kueyen VLT telescope and
use state of the art 1D model atmospheres and NLTE line transfer to determine
the abundances. We also employ CO5BOLD hydrodynamical simulations to assess the
impact of stellar granulation on the line formation and inferred abundances.
Our results confirm the existence of Na-O abundance anti-correlation and hint
towards a possible Li-O anti-correlation in the TO stars of 47 Tuc. We find no
convincing evidence supporting the existence of Li-Na correlation. The obtained
3D NLTE mean lithium abundance in a sample of 94 TO stars where Li lines were
detected reliably,
dex, appears to be significantly lower than what is observed in other globular
clusters. At the same time, star-to-star spread in Li abundance is also larger
than seen in other clusters. The highest Li abundance observed in 47 Tuc is
about 0.1 dex lower than the lowest Li abundance observed among the un-depleted
stars of the metal-poor open cluster NGC 2243. The lithium abundances in 47
Tuc, when put into context with observations in other clusters and field stars,
suggest that stars that are more metal-rich than [FeH] \sim -1.0 experience
significant lithium depletion during their lifetime on the main sequence, while
the more metal-poor stars do not. Rather strikingly, our results suggest that
initial lithium abundance with which the star was created may only depend on
its age (the younger the star, the higher its Li content) and not on its

Making On-Demand Routing Efficient with Route-Request Aggregation
In theory, on-demand routing is very attractive for mobile ad hoc networks
(MANET), because it induces signaling only for those destinations for which
there is data traffic. However, in practice, the signaling overhead of existing
on-demand routing protocols becomes excessive as the rate of topology changes
increases due to mobility or other causes. We introduce the first on-demand
routing approach that eliminates the main limitation of on-demand routing by
aggregating route requests (RREQ) for the same destinations. The approach can
be applied to any existing on-demand routing protocol, and we introduce the
Ad-hoc Demand-Aggregated Routing with Adaptation (ADARA) as an example of how
RREQ aggregation can be used. ADARA is compared to AODV and OLSR using
discrete-event simulations, and the results show that aggregating RREQs can
make on-demand routing more efficient than existing proactive or on-demand
routing protocols
