Knowledge modeling for software design
This paper develops a modeling framework for systems engineering that encompasses systems modeling, task modeling, and knowledge modeling, and allows knowledge engineering and software engineering to be seen as part of a unified developmental process. This framework is used to evaluate what novel contributions the 'knowledge engineering' paradigm has made and how these impact software engineering
Intending to be ethical: An examination of consumer choice in sweatshop avoidance
While much research in ethical consumption has focused on contexts such as food, this research explores ethical consumer decision-making in the context of intention to avoid sweatshop apparel. This research seeks to deepen the Theory of Planned Behavior with respect to the motivation and volitional stages underlying behavior. The findings of the research, based on 794 consumers, are novel and support an enriched framework which reveals that the role of attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control are mediated by desire, intention and plan. The findings have implications for research seeking to address the âintention-behaviorâ gap

Visualising and quantifying 'excess deaths' in Scotland compared with the rest of the UK and the rest of Western Europe
BACKGROUND: Scotland has higher mortality rates than the rest of Western Europe (rWE), with more cardiovascular disease and cancer among older adults; and alcohol-related and drug-related deaths, suicide and violence among younger adults. METHODS: We obtained sex, age-specific and year-specific all-cause mortality rates for Scotland and other populations, and explored differences in mortality both visually and numerically. RESULTS: Scotland's age-specific mortality was higher than the rest of the UK (rUK) since 1950, and has increased. Between the 1950s and 2000s, 'excess deaths' by age 80 per 100â
000 population associated with living in Scotland grew from 4341 to 7203 compared with rUK, and from 4132 to 8828 compared with rWE. UK-wide mortality risk compared with rWE also increased, from 240 'excess deaths' in the 1950s to 2320 in the 2000s. Cohorts born in the 1940s and 1950s throughout the UK including Scotland had lower mortality risk than comparable rWE populations, especially for males. Mortality rates were higher in Scotland than rUK and rWE among younger adults from the 1990s onwards suggesting an age-period interaction. CONCLUSIONS: Worsening mortality among young adults in the past 30â
years reversed a relative advantage evident for those born between 1950 and 1960. Compared with rWE, Scotland and rUK have followed similar trends but Scotland has started from a worse position and had worse working age-period effects in the 1990s and 2000s

An Examination of the Volitional Stages in Consumer Decisions to Avoid Sweatshop Clothing
While much research in ethical consumption has focused on contexts such as food, this research explores ethical consumer decision-making in the context of intention to avoid sweatshop clothing where consumer concern has increased but response from the market remains limited. This research seeks to deepen the theory of planned behaviour with respect to the volitional stages underlying behaviour. The findings of the research support a modified theory of planned behaviour model and also reveal volitional stages from intention to trying and plan which reveal the stages of consumer decision-making to avoid sweatshop clothing. Implications for consumer decision-making are discussed
Exclusion process for particles of arbitrary extension: Hydrodynamic limit and algebraic properties
The behaviour of extended particles with exclusion interaction on a
one-dimensional lattice is investigated. The basic model is called -ASEP
as a generalization of the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) to particles of
arbitrary length . Stationary and dynamical properties of the -ASEP
with periodic boundary conditions are derived in the hydrodynamic limit from
microscopic properties of the underlying stochastic many-body system. In
particular, the hydrodynamic equation for the local density evolution and the
time-dependent diffusion constant of a tracer particle are calculated. As a
fundamental algebraic property of the symmetric exclusion process (SEP) the
SU(2)-symmetry is generalized to the case of extended particles
Two-Channel Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Processes
Totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes, consisting of two coupled
parallel lattice chains with particles interacting with hard-core exclusion and
moving along the channels and between them, are considered. In the limit of
strong coupling between the channels, the particle currents, density profiles
and a phase diagram are calculated exactly by mapping the system into an
effective one-channel totally asymmetric exclusion model. For intermediate
couplings, a simple approximate theory, that describes the particle dynamics in
vertical clusters of two corresponding parallel sites exactly and neglects the
correlations between different vertical clusters, is developed. It is found
that, similarly to the case of one-channel totally asymmetric simple exclusion
processes, there are three stationary state phases, although the phase
boundaries and stationary properties strongly depend on inter-channel coupling.
An extensive computer Monte Carlo simulations fully support the theoretical

Local Inhomogeneity in Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Processes with Extended Objects
Totally asymmetric simple exclusion processes (TASEP) with particles which
occupy more than one lattice site and with a local inhomogeneity far away from
the boundaries are investigated. These non-equilibrium processes are relevant
for the understanding of many biological and chemical phenomena. The
steady-state phase diagrams, currents, and bulk densities are calculated using
a simple approximate theory and extensive Monte Carlo computer simulations. It
is found that the phase diagram for TASEP with a local inhomogeneity is
qualitatively similar to homogeneous models, although the phase boundaries are
significantly shifted. The complex dynamics is discussed in terms of
domain-wall theory for driven lattice systems.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
