    Yang-Baxter algebra and generation of quantum integrable models

    An operator deformed quantum algebra is discovered exploiting the quantum Yang-Baxter equation with trigonometric R-matrix. This novel Hopf algebra along with its q1q \to 1 limit appear to be the most general Yang-Baxter algebra underlying quantum integrable systems. Three different directions of application of this algebra in integrable systems depending on different sets of values of deforming operators are identified. Fixed values on the whole lattice yield subalgebras linked to standard quantum integrable models, while the associated Lax operators generate and classify them in an unified way. Variable values construct a new series of quantum integrable inhomogeneous models. Fixed but different values at different lattice sites can produce a novel class of integrable hybrid models including integrable matter-radiation models and quantum field models with defects, in particular, a new quantum integrable sine-Gordon model with defect.Comment: 13 pages, revised and bit expanded with additional explanations, accepted for publication in Theor.     Stability of a horizontal viscous fluid layer in a vertical time periodic electric field

    The stability of a horizontal interface between two viscous fluids, one of which is conducting and the other is dielectric, acted upon by a vertical time-periodic electric field is considered. The two fluids are bounded by electrodes separated by a finite distance. By means of Floquet theory, the marginal stability curves are obtained, thereby elucidating the dependency of the critical voltage and wavenumber upon the fluid viscosities. The limit of vanishing viscosities is shown to be in excellent agreement with the marginal stability curves predicted by means of a Mathieu equation. The methodology to obtain the marginal stability curves developed here is applicable to any arbitrary but time periodic-signal, as demonstrated for the case of a signal with two different frequencies. As a special case, the marginal stability curves for an applied ac voltage biased by a dc voltage are depicted. It is shown that the mode coupling caused by the normal stress at the interface due to the electric field leads to appearance of harmonic modes and subharmonic modes. This is in contrast to the application of a voltage with a single frequency which always leads to a harmonic mode. Whether a harmonic or subharmonic mode is the most unstable one depends on details of the excitation signal. It is also shown that the electrode spacing has a distinct effect on the stability bahavior of the system

    An investigation into the effect of thickness of titanium dioxide and gold-silver nanoparticle titanium dioxide composite thin-films on photocatalytic activity and photo-induced oxygen production in a sacrificial system

    Thin films of titanium dioxide and titanium dioxide with incorporated gold and silver nanoparticles were deposited onto glass microscope slides, steel and titanium foil coupons by two sol–gel dip-coating methods. The film's photocatalytic activity and ability to evolve oxygen in a sacrificial solution were assessed. It was found that photocatalytic activity increased with film thickness (from 50 to 500 nm thick samples) for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in solution and resazurin redox dye in an intelligent ink dye deposited on the surface. Contrastingly, an optimum film thickness of [similar]200 nm for both composite and pure films of titanium dioxide was found for water oxidation, using persulfate (S2O82−) as a sacrificial electron acceptor. The nanoparticle composite films showed significantly higher activity in oxygen evolution studies compared with plain TiO2 films

    Constraints on R-parity violating supersymmetry from neutral meson mixing

    Upper bounds at the weak scale are put on all λijkλimn\lambda'_{ijk}\lambda'_{imn} type products of R-parity violating supersymmetry that may affect K-Kbar and B-Bbar mixing. We constrain all possible products, including some not considered before, using next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the mixing amplitudes. Constraints are obtained for both real and imaginary parts of the couplings.     An X-ray emitting black hole in a globular cluster

    We present optical and X-ray data for the first object showing strong evidence for being a black hole in a globular cluster. We show the initial X-ray light curve and X-ray spectrum which led to the discovery that this is an extremely bright, highly variable source, and thus must be a black hole. We present the optical spectrum which unambiguously identifies the optical counterpart as a globular cluster, and which shows a strong, broad [O III] emission line, most likely coming from an outflow driven by the accreting source.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of IAUS 246, "Dynamical Evolution of Dense Stellar Systems", ed.
