In the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, we give thIn the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, we give the chiral expansion for the πNππN\pi N \to \pi \pi N threshold amplitudes D1D_1 and D2D_2 to quadratic order in the pion mass. The theoretical results agree within one standard deviation with the empirical values. We also derive a relation between the two threshold amplitudes of the reaction πNππN\pi N \to \pi \pi N and the ππ\pi \pi S--wave scattering lengths, a00a_0^0 and a02a_0^2, respectively, to order O(Mπ2){\cal O}(M_\pi^2). We show that there are uncertainties mostly related to resonance excitation which make an accurate determination of the ππ\pi \pi scattering length a00a_0^0 from the ππN\pi \pi N threshold amplitudes at present very difficult. The situation is different in the ππ\pi \pi isospin two final state. Here, the chiral series converges and one finds a02=0.031±0.007a_0^2 = -0.031 \pm 0.007 consistent with the one--loop chiral perturbation theory prediction.Comment: 30 pp, LaTeX file, uses epsf, 6 figures (appended), corrections in sections 5 and 6, conclusions unchange

    The Reaction πNππN\pi N \to \pi \pi N at Threshold

We consider the chiral expansion for the reaction πNππN\pi N \to \pi \pi N in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. To order MπM_\pi we derive novel low--energy theorems that compare favorably with recent determinations of the total cross sections for π+pπ+π+n\pi^+ p \to \pi^+ \pi^+ n and πpπ0π0n\pi^- p \to \pi^0 \pi^0 n.Comment: 7 pp, LateX (uses epsf.sty), 3 figures appended as ps files (split off as ppnf1.ps,ppnf2.ps,ppnf3.ps), CRN 94/1

General properties of the pion production reaction in nuclear matter

The pion production reaction π+π+π±\pi^+ \to \pi^+\pi^{\pm} on 45Sc^{45}Sc was studied at incident pion energies of Tπ+T_{\pi^{+}} = 240, 260, 280, 300, and 320 MeV. The experiment was performed using the M11M11 pion-channel at TRIUMF, and multiparticle events, (π+,π+π±\pi^+,\pi^+\pi^{\pm}) and (π+,π+π±p\pi^+,\pi^+\pi^{\pm}p), were detected with the CHAOS spectrometer. Results are reported in the form of both differential and total cross sections, and are compared to theoretical predictions and the reaction phase space. The present investigation of the T-dependence of the π+Aπ+π±A\pi^+ A \to \pi^+\pi^{\pm} A' reaction complements earlier examinations of the A-dependence of the reaction, which was measured using 2H^{2}H, 4He^{4}He, 12C^{12}C, 16O^{16}O, 40Ca^{40}Ca, and 208Pb^{208}Pb targets at \sim280 MeV. Some general properties of the pion-induced pion production reaction in nuclear matter will be presented, based on the combined results of the two studies.Comment: 23 pages, Latex, accepted for publication in Nucl. One-loop analysis of the reaction pi N to pi pi N

Single pion production off nucleons is studied in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to third order in the chiral expansion. Using total and some older differential cross section data to pin down the low-energy constants, most of the recent differential cross sections and angular correlation functions can be described as well as total cross sections at higher energies. We show that the contributions from the one loop graphs are essentially negligible and that the dominant terms at second and third order are related to pion-nucleon scattering graphs with one pion added. We also discuss the possibility of extracting the pion-pion S-wave scattering lengths from the unpolarized data.Comment: 57 pp, LaTeX file, 13 figures (uses epsf

Determination of the Michel Parameters rho, xi, and delta in tau-Lepton Decays with tau --> rho nu Tags

    Using the ARGUS detector at the e+ee^+ e^- storage ring DORIS II, we have measured the Michel parameters ρ\rho, ξ\xi, and ξδ\xi\delta for τ±l±ννˉ\tau^{\pm}\to l^{\pm} \nu\bar\nu decays in τ\tau-pair events produced at center of mass energies in the region of the Υ\Upsilon resonances. Using τρν\tau^\mp \to \rho^\mp \nu as spin analyzing tags, we find ρe=0.68±0.04±0.08\rho_{e}=0.68\pm 0.04 \pm 0.08, ξe=1.12±0.20±0.09\xi_{e}= 1.12 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.09, ξδe=0.57±0.14±0.07\xi\delta_{e}= 0.57 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.07, ρμ=0.69±0.06±0.08\rho_{\mu}= 0.69 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.08, ξμ=1.25±0.27±0.14\xi_{\mu}= 1.25 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.14 and ξδμ=0.72±0.18±0.10\xi\delta_{\mu}= 0.72 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.10. In addition, we report the combined ARGUS results on ρ\rho, ξ\xi, and ξδ\xi\delta using this work und previous measurements.Comment: 10 pages, well formatted postscript can be found at http://pktw06.phy.tu-dresden.de/iktp/pub/desy97-194.p

Search for charginos in e+e- interactions at sqrt(s) = 189 GeV

An update of the searches for charginos and gravitinos is presented, based on a data sample corresponding to the 158 pb^{-1} recorded by the DELPHI detector in 1998, at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. No evidence for a signal was found. The lower mass limits are 4-5 GeV/c^2 higher than those obtained at a centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The (\mu,M_2) MSSM domain excluded by combining the chargino searches with neutralino searches at the Z resonance implies a limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino which, for a heavy sneutrino, is constrained to be above 31.0 GeV/c^2 for tan(beta) \geq 1.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure

Measurement and Interpretation of Fermion-Pair Production at LEP energies above the Z Resonance

This paper presents DELPHI measurements and interpretations of cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries, and angular distributions, for the e+e- -> ffbar process for centre-of-mass energies above the Z resonance, from sqrt(s) ~ 130 - 207 GeV at the LEP collider. The measurements are consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model and are used to study a variety of models including the S-Matrix ansatz for e+e- -> ffbar scattering and several models which include physics beyond the Standard Model: the exchange of Z' bosons, contact interactions between fermions, the exchange of gravitons in large extra dimensions and the exchange of sneutrino in R-parity violating supersymmetry.Comment: 79 pages, 16 figures, Accepted by Eur. A Determination of the Centre-of-Mass Energy at LEP2 using Radiative 2-fermion Events

Using e+e- -> mu+mu-(gamma) and e+e- -> qqbar(gamma) events radiative to the Z pole, DELPHI has determined the centre-of-mass energy, sqrt{s}, using energy and momentum constraint methods. The results are expressed as deviations from the nominal LEP centre-of-mass energy, measured using other techniques. The results are found to be compatible with the LEP Energy Working Group estimates for a combination of the 1997 to 2000 data sets.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, Accepted by Eur. Phys. J.
