The in-medium isovector pi N amplitude from low energy pion scattering
Differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 21.5 MeV positive and
negative pions by Si, Ca, Ni and Zr have been measured as part of a study of
the pion-nucleus potential across threshold. The `anomalous' repulsion in the
s-wave term was observed, as is the case with pionic atoms. The extra repulsion
can be accounted for by a chiral-motivated model where the pion decay constant
is modified in the medium. Unlike in pionic atoms, the anomaly cannot be
removed by merely introducing an empirical on-shell energy dependence.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. Minor changes, to appear in PR
Elastic scattering of low energy pions by nuclei and the in-medium isovector pi N amplitude
Measurements of elastic scattering of 21.5 MeV pi+ and pi- by Si, Ca, Ni and
Zr were made using a single arm magnetic spectrometer. Absolute calibration was
made by parallel measurements of Coulomb scattering of muons. Parameters of a
pion-nucleus optical potential were obtained from fits to all eight angular
distributions put together. The `anomalous' s-wave repulsion known from pionic
atoms is clearly observed and could be removed by introducing a
chiral-motivated density dependence of the isovector scattering amplitude,
which also greatly improved the fits to the data. The empirical energy
dependence of the isoscalar amplitude also improves the fits to the data but,
contrary to what is found with pionic atoms, on its own is incapable of

Continuum Superpartners
In an exact conformal theory there is no particle. The excitations have
continuum spectra and are called "unparticles" by Georgi. We consider
supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model with approximate conformal
sectors. The conformal symmetry is softly broken in the infrared which
generates a gap. However, the spectrum can still have a continuum above the gap
if there is no confinement. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence this can be
achieved with a soft wall in the warped extra dimension. When supersymmetry is
broken the superpartners of the Standard Model particles may simply be a
continuum above gap. The collider signals can be quite different from the
standard supersymmetric scenarios and the experimental searches for the

The relationship between intercultural teaching competence and school and classroom level characteristics
The increasing levels of diversity in primary education make it essential to identify factors that influence Intercultural Teaching Competence (ITC). This study investigates which factors of Educational Effectiveness Research contribute to five dimensions of ITC: openness, classroom management, enriched lesson design, social initiative, and storytelling. Therewith, it contributes to the literature of both fields. Data collected through a cross-sectional survey among 155 Dutch primary school teachers were examined with linear regression analyses. The results showed that some characteristics at the classroom level have a strong significant relationship with dimensions of Intercultural Teaching Competence, whereas school characteristics did not
Dissipative quantum mechanics and Kondo-like impurities on noncommutative two-tori
In a recent paper, by exploiting the notion of Morita equivalence for field
theories on noncommutative tori and choosing rational values of the
noncommutativity parameter (in appropriate units), a general
one-to-one correspondence between the -reduced conformal field theory (CFT)
describing a quantum Hall fluid (QHF) at paired states fillings and an Abelian noncommutative field theory (NCFT) has been
established . That allowed us to add new evidence to the relationship between
noncommutativity and quantum Hall fluids\cite% {ncmanybody}. On the other hand,
the -reduced CFT is equivalent to a system of two massless scalar bosons
with a magnetic boundary interaction as introduced by Callan et al., at the so
called ``magic''\ points. We are then able to describe, within such a
framework, the dissipative quantum mechanics of a particle confined to a plane
and subject to an external magnetic field normal to it. Here we develop such a
point of view by focusing on the case which corresponds to a quantum Hall
bilayer. The key role of a localized impurity which couples the two layers is
emphasized and the effect of noncommutativity in terms of generalized magnetic
translations (GMT) is fully exploited. As a result, general GMT operators are
introduced, in the form of a tensor product, which act on the QHF and defect
space respectively, and a comprehensive study of their rich structure is

Circadian pattern and burstiness in mobile phone communication
The temporal communication patterns of human individuals are known to be
inhomogeneous or bursty, which is reflected as the heavy tail behavior in the
inter-event time distribution. As the cause of such bursty behavior two main
mechanisms have been suggested: a) Inhomogeneities due to the circadian and
weekly activity patterns and b) inhomogeneities rooted in human task execution
behavior. Here we investigate the roles of these mechanisms by developing and
then applying systematic de-seasoning methods to remove the circadian and
weekly patterns from the time-series of mobile phone communication events of
individuals. We find that the heavy tails in the inter-event time distributions
remain robustly with respect to this procedure, which clearly indicates that
the human task execution based mechanism is a possible cause for the remaining
burstiness in temporal mobile phone communication patterns.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
The Spectrum of Strings on Warped AdS_3 x S^3
String theory on NS-NS AdS_3 x S^3 admits an exactly marginal deformation
which breaks the SL(2,R)_R x SL(2,R)_L isometry of AdS_3 down to SL(2,R)_R x
U(1)_L. The holographic dual is an exotic and only partially understood type of
two-dimensional CFT with a reduced unbroken global conformal symmetry group. In
this paper we study the deformed theory on the string worldsheet. It is found
to be related by a spectral flow which is nonlocal in spacetime to the
undeformed worldsheet theory. An exact formula for the spectrum of massive

A New and Elementary CP^n Dyonic Magnon
We show that the dressing transformation method produces a new type of dyonic
CP^n magnon in terms of which all the other known solutions are either
composites or arise as special limits. In particular, this includes the
embedding of Dorey's dyonic magnon via an RP^3 subspace of CP^n. We also show
how to generate Dorey's dyonic magnon directly in the S^n sigma model via the
dressing method without resorting to the isomorphism with the SU(2) principle
chiral model when n=3. The new dyon is shown to be either a charged dyon or
topological kink of the related symmetric-space sine-Gordon theories associated
to CP^n and in this sense is a direct generalization of the soliton of the
