Thermal divergences on the event horizons of two-dimensional black holes
The expectation value of the stress-energy tensor \langleT_{\mu\nu}\rangle
of a free conformally invariant scalar field is computed in a general static
two-dimensional black hole spacetime when the field is in either a zero
temperature vacuum state or a thermal state at a nonzero temperature. It is
found that for every static two-dimensional black hole the stress-energy
diverges strongly on the event horizon unless the field is in a state at the
natural black hole temperature which is defined by the surface gravity of the
event horizon. This implies that both extreme and nonextreme two-dimensional
black holes can only be in equilibrium with radiation at the natural black hole
temperature.Comment: 13 pages, REVTe
The effect of duration of exercise at the ventilation threshold on subjective appetite and short-term food intake in 9 to 14 year old boys and girls

Abstract

Background

The effect of exercise on subjective appetite and short-term food intake has received little investigation in children. Despite a lack of reported evaluation of short-duration activity programs, they are currently being implemented in schools as a means to benefit energy balance. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of duration of exercise at the ventilation threshold (VeT) on subjective appetite and short-term food intake in normal weight boys and girls aged 9 to 14 years.

Methods

On 4 separate mornings and in random order, boys (n = 14) and girls (n = 15) completed 2 rest or 2 exercise treatments for 15 (short-duration; SD) or 45 min (long-duration; LD) at their previously measured VeT, 2 h after a standardized breakfast. Subjective appetite was measured at regular intervals during the study sessions and food intake from a pizza meal was measured 30 min after rest or exercise.

Results

An increase in average appetite, desire to eat, and hunger (p < 0.05) was attenuated by SD exercise, but was further increased (p < 0.05) by LD exercise. However, food intake after SD and LD exercise was similar to after rest in both boys and girls (p = 0.55). The energy cost of SD and LD exercise resulted in a lower net energy balance compared to resting during the study measurement period in boys (SD: Π= -418 ± 301 kJ; LD: Π= -928 ± 196 kJ) and in girls (SD: Π= -297 ± 105 kJ; LD: Π= -432 ± 115 kJ).

Conclusion

Neither SD nor LD exercise at the VeT increased short-term food intake and SD exercise attenuated increases in appetite. Thus, SD exercise programs in schools may be an effective strategy for maintaining healthier body weights in children.</p
Holographic Description of Gravitational Anomalies
The holographic duality can be extended to include quantum theories with
broken coordinate invariance leading to the appearance of the gravitational
anomalies. On the gravity side one adds the gravitational Chern-Simons term to
the bulk action which gauge invariance is only up to the boundary terms. We
analyze in detail how the gravitational anomalies originate from the modified
Einstein equations in the bulk. As a side observation we find that the
gravitational Chern-Simons functional has interesting conformal properties. It
is invariant under conformal transformations. Moreover, its metric variation
produces conformal tensor which is a generalization of the Cotton tensor to
dimension . We calculate the modification of the holographic
stress-energy tensor that is due to the Chern-Simons term and use the bulk
Einstein equations to find its divergence and thus reproduce the gravitational
anomaly. Explicit calculation of the anomaly is carried out in dimensions
and . The result of the holographic calculation is compared with that of
the descent method and agreement is found. The gravitational Chern-Simons term
originates by Kaluza-Klein mechanism from a one-loop modification of M-theory
action. This modification is discussed in the context of the gravitational
anomaly in six-dimensional theory. The agreement with earlier
conjectured anomaly is found.Comment: 24 pages, Latex; presentation re-structured, new references adde
The White Dwarf Cooling Sequence of NGC6397
We present the results of a deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) exposure of the
nearby globular cluster NGC6397, focussing attention on the cluster's white
dwarf cooling sequence. This sequence is shown to extend over 5 magnitudes in
depth, with an apparent cutoff at magnitude F814W=27.6. We demonstrate, using
both artificial star tests and the detectability of background galaxies at
fainter magnitudes, that the cutoff is real and represents the truncation of
the white dwarf luminosity function in this cluster. We perform a detailed
comparison between cooling models and the observed distribution of white dwarfs
in colour and magnitude, taking into account uncertainties in distance,
extinction, white dwarf mass, progenitor lifetimes, binarity and cooling model
uncertainties. After marginalising over these variables, we obtain values for
the cluster distance modulus and age of \mu_0 = 12.02 \pm 0.06 and T_c = 11.47
\pm 0.47Gyr (95% confidence limits). Our inferred distance and white dwarf
initial-final mass relations are in good agreement with other independent
determinations, and the cluster age is consistent with, but more precise than,
prior determinations made using the main sequence turnoff method. In
particular, within the context of the currently accepted \Lambda CDM
cosmological model, this age places the formation of NGC6397 at a redshift z=3,
at a time when the cosmological star formation rate was approaching its peak.Comment: 56 pages, 30 figure

Third Generation Effects on Fermion Mass Predictions in Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories
Relations among fermion masses and mixing angles at the scale of grand
unification are modified at lower energies by renormalization group running
induced by gauge and Yukawa couplings. In supersymmetric theories, the
quark and lepton Yukawa couplings, as well as the quark coupling,
may cause significant running if , the ratio of Higgs field
expectation values, is large. We present approximate analytic expressions for
the scaling factors for fermion masses and CKM matrix elements induced by all
three third generation Yukawa couplings. We then determine how running caused
by the third generation of fermions affects the predictions arising from three
possible forms for the Yukawa coupling matrices at the GUT scale: the
Georgi-Jarlskog, Giudice, and Fritzsch textures.Comment: phyzzx, 26 pp., 6 figures not included, e-mailable upon request,

Flavor Unification and Discrete Nonabelian Symmetries
Grand unified theories with fermions transforming as irreducible
representations of a discrete nonabelian flavor symmetry can lead to realistic
fermion masses, without requiring very small fundamental parameters. We
construct a specific example of a supersymmetric GUT based on the flavor
symmetry --- a subgroup of --- which can explain the
observed quark and lepton masses and mixing angles. The model predicts
and gives a neutrino mass eV, with other neutrino masses much lighter. Combined
constraints of light quark masses and perturbative unification place flavor
symmetry breaking near the GUT scale; it may be possible to probe these
extremely high energies by continuing the search for flavor changing neutral
currents.Comment: 24 pages, UCSD-PTH-93-30 (uuencoded file; requires epsf.tex,

Habitat Specialization in Tropical Continental Shelf Demersal Fish Assemblages
The implications of shallow water impacts such as fishing and climate change on fish assemblages are generally considered in isolation from the distribution and abundance of these fish assemblages in adjacent deeper waters. We investigate the abundance and length of demersal fish assemblages across a section of tropical continental shelf at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, to identify fish and fish habitat relationships across steep gradients in depth and in different benthic habitat types. The assemblage composition of demersal fish were assessed from baited remote underwater stereo-video samples (nâ=â304) collected from 16 depth and habitat combinations. Samples were collected across a depth range poorly represented in the literature from the fringing reef lagoon (1â10 m depth), down the fore reef slope to the reef base (10â30 m depth) then across the adjacent continental shelf (30â110 m depth). Multivariate analyses showed that there were distinctive fish assemblages and different sized fish were associated with each habitat/depth category. Species richness, MaxN and diversity declined with depth, while average length and trophic level increased. The assemblage structure, diversity, size and trophic structure of demersal fishes changes from shallow inshore habitats to deeper water habitats. More habitat specialists (unique species per habitat/depth category) were associated with the reef slope and reef base than other habitats, but offshore sponge-dominated habitats and inshore coral-dominated reef also supported unique species. This suggests that marine protected areas in shallow coral-dominated reef habitats may not adequately protect those species whose depth distribution extends beyond shallow habitats, or other significant elements of demersal fish biodiversity. The ontogenetic habitat partitioning which is characteristic of many species, suggests that to maintain entire species life histories it is necessary to protect corridors of connected habitats through which fish can migrate
The Space Motion of the Globular Cluster NGC 6397
As a by-product of high-precision, ultra-deep stellar photometry in the
Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397 with the Hubble Space Telescope, we are able
to measure a large population of background galaxies whose images are nearly
point-like. These provide an extragalactic reference frame of unprecedented
accuracy, relative to which we measure the most accurate absolute proper motion
ever determined for a globular cluster. We find mu_alpha = 3.56 +/- 0.04 mas/yr
and mu_delta = -17.34 +/- 0.04 mas/yr. We note that the formal statistical
errors quoted for the proper motion of NGC 6397 do not include possible
unavoidable sources of systematic errors, such as cluster rotation. These are
very unlikely to exceed a few percent. We use this new proper motion to
calculate NGC 6397's UVW space velocity and its orbit around the Milky Way, and
find that the cluster has made frequent passages through the Galactic disk.Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures, accepted for publication in the
