Liquid-hydrogen rocket engine development at Aerojet, 1944 - 1950
This program demonstrated the feasibility of virtually all the components in present-day, high-energy, liquid-rocket engines. Transpiration and film-cooled thrust chambers were successfully operated. The first liquid-hydrogen tests of the coaxial injector was conducted and the first pump to successfully produce high pressures in pumping liquid hydrogen was tested. A 1,000-lb-thrust gaseous propellant and a 3,000-lb-thrust liquid-propellant thrust chamber were operated satisfactorily. Also, the first tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of jet overexpansion and separation on performance of rocket thrust chambers with hydrogen-oxygen propellants
The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 by (1) Ceres
The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 was discovered during a photographic search carried out with the 0.5 meter Carnegie Double Astrograph at Lick Observatory and the Lowell Observatory PDS microdensitometer. Such a search was stimulated by the curious fact that few favorably located occultations of AGK3 or SAO catalog starts by Ceres will occur during the 1980s. The occultation on 13 November, however, is a particularly good event. The star is 1000 cubic M in V, yielding a predicted drop at occultation of about 10%. Such a drop can be detected by small telescopes equipped with photoelectric photometers, but is too small to be seen visually. The track was predicted to cross the Caribbean, Florida, southern Texas, and Mexico. Based on this prediction, preparations were made to observe the event in Mexico using four portable occultation data systems
Stochastic field theory for a Dirac particle propagating in gauge field disorder
Recent theoretical and numerical developments show analogies between quantum
chromodynamics (QCD) and disordered systems in condensed matter physics. We
study the spectral fluctuations of a Dirac particle propagating in a finite
four dimensional box in the presence of gauge fields. We construct a model
which combines Efetov's approach to disordered systems with the principles of
chiral symmetry and QCD. To this end, the gauge fields are replaced with a
stochastic white noise potential, the gauge field disorder. Effective
supersymmetric non-linear sigma-models are obtained. Spontaneous breaking of
supersymmetry is found. We rigorously derive the equivalent of the Thouless
energy in QCD. Connections to other low-energy effective theories, in
particular the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and chiral perturbation theory, are

Finite-Volume Scaling of the Quenched Chiral Condensate
In the large-volume limit with the
mass-dependent chiral condensate is predicted to satisfy exact finite-volume
scaling laws that fall into three major universality classes. We test these
analytical predictions with staggered fermions and overlap fermions in gauge

Extracting from small lattices: unquenched results
We calculate the response of the microscopic Dirac spectrum to an imaginary
isospin chemical potential for QCD with two dynamical flavors in the chiral
limit. This extends our previous calculation from the quenched to the
unquenched theory. The resulting spectral correlation function in the
-regime provides here, too, a new and efficient way to measure
on the lattice. We test the method in a hybrid Monte Carlo simulation
of the theory with two staggered quarks.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Three-point Green function of the stress-energy tensor in the AdS/CFT correspondence
We compute the 3-point function of the stress-energy tensor in the
d-dimensional CFT from the AdS_{d+1} gravity. For d=4 the coefficients of the
three linearly independent conformally covariant forms entering the 3-point
function are exactly the same as given by the free field computations in the
SYM just as expected from the known renormalization theorems. For
d=3 and d=6 our results give the value of the corresponding 3-point function in
the theories of strongly coupled superconformal scalar and (2,0)

(1,0) superconformal theories in six dimensions and Killing spinor equations
We solve the Killing spinor equations of 6-dimensional (1,0) superconformal
theories in all cases. In particular, we derive the conditions on the fields
imposed by the Killing spinor equations and demonstrate that these depend on
the isotropy group of the Killing spinors. We focus on the models proposed by
Samtleben et al in \cite{ssw} and find that there are solutions preserving 1,2,
4 and 8 supersymmetries. We also explore the solutions which preserve 4
supersymmetries and find that many models admit string and 3-brane solitons as
expected from the M-brane intersection rules. The string solitons are smooth
regulated by the moduli of instanton configurations.Comment: 26 page
Quantum Cylindrical Waves and Sigma Models
We analyze cylindrical gravitational waves in vacuo with general polarization
and develop a viewpoint complementary to that presented recently by Niedermaier
showing that the auxiliary sigma model associated with this family of waves is

Universal Scaling of the Chiral Condensate in Finite-Volume Gauge Theories
We confront exact analytical predictions for the finite-volume scaling of the
chiral condensate with data from quenched lattice gauge theory simulations.
Using staggered fermions in both the fundamental and adjoint representations,
and gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3), we are able to test simultaneously all of the
three chiral universality classes. With overlap fermions we also test the
predictions for gauge field sectors of non-zero topological charge. Excellent
agreement is found in most cases, and the deviations are understood in the
