Ultracold electron bunch generation via plasma photocathode emission and acceleration in a beam-driven plasma blowout
Beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration using low-ionization-threshold gas such as Li is combined with laser-controlled electron injection via ionization of high-ionization-threshold gas such as He. The He electrons are released with low transverse momentum in the focus of the copropagating, nonrelativistic-intensity laser pulse directly inside the accelerating or focusing phase of the Li blowout. This concept paves the way for the generation of sub-μm-size, ultralow-emittance, highly tunable electron bunches, thus enabling a flexible new class of an advanced free electron laser capable high-field accelerator. © 2012 American Physical Society
Broadband detection of squeezed vacuum: A spectrum of quantum states
We demonstrate the simultaneous quantum state reconstruction of the spectral
modes of the light field emitted by a continuous wave degenerate optical
parametric amplifier. The scheme is based on broadband measurement of the
quantum fluctuations of the electric field quadratures and subsequent Fourier
decomposition into spectral intervals. Applying the standard reconstruction
algorithms to each bandwidth-limited quantum trajectory, a "spectrum" of
density matrices and Wigner functions is obtained. The recorded states show a
smooth transition from the squeezed vacuum to a vacuum state. In the time
domain we evaluated the first order correlation function of the squeezed output
field, showing good agreement with the theory.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Metastability of Asymptotically Well-Behaved Potential Games
One of the main criticisms to game theory concerns the assumption of full
rationality. Logit dynamics is a decentralized algorithm in which a level of
irrationality (a.k.a. "noise") is introduced in players' behavior. In this
context, the solution concept of interest becomes the logit equilibrium, as
opposed to Nash equilibria. Logit equilibria are distributions over strategy
profiles that possess several nice properties, including existence and
uniqueness. However, there are games in which their computation may take time
exponential in the number of players. We therefore look at an approximate
version of logit equilibria, called metastable distributions, introduced by
Auletta et al. [SODA 2012]. These are distributions that remain stable (i.e.,
players do not go too far from it) for a super-polynomial number of steps
(rather than forever, as for logit equilibria). The hope is that these
distributions exist and can be reached quickly by logit dynamics.
We identify a class of potential games, called asymptotically well-behaved,
for which the behavior of the logit dynamics is not chaotic as the number of
players increases so to guarantee meaningful asymptotic results. We prove that
any such game admits distributions which are metastable no matter the level of
noise present in the system, and the starting profile of the dynamics. These
distributions can be quickly reached if the rationality level is not too big
when compared to the inverse of the maximum difference in potential. Our proofs
build on results which may be of independent interest, including some spectral
characterizations of the transition matrix defined by logit dynamics for
generic games and the relationship of several convergence measures for Markov
chains
Improvement for Quenched Wilson Fermions
We briefly describe some of our recent results for the mass spectrum and
matrix elements using improved fermions for quenched QCD. Where possible
a comparison is made between improved and Wilson fermions.Comment: 6 pages, Latex, 11 figures, epsf.sty and buckow1.sty needed

Isospin splittings of meson and baryon masses from three-flavor lattice QCD + QED
Lattice QCD simulations are now reaching a precision where isospin breaking
effects become important. Previously, we have developed a program to
systematically investigate the pattern of flavor symmetry beaking within QCD
and successfully applied it to meson and baryon masses involving up, down and
strange quarks. In this Letter we extend the calculations to QCD + QED and
present our first results on isospin splittings in the pseudoscalar meson and
baryon octets. In particular, we obtain the nucleon mass difference of
M_n-M_p=1.35(18)(8)\,\mbox{MeV} and the electromagnetic contribution to the
pion splitting M_{\pi^+}-M_{\pi^0}=4.60(20)\,\mbox{MeV}. Further we report
first determination of the separation between strong and electromagnetic
contributions in the scheme.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, text and figures added, Journal versio
Determining the scale in Lattice QCD
We discuss scale setting in the context of 2+1 dynamical fermion simulations
where we approach the physical point in the quark mass plane keeping the
average quark mass constant. We have simulations at four beta values, and after
determining the paths and lattice spacings, we give an estimation of the
phenomenological values of various Wilson flow scales.Comment: 7 pages; talk presented at Lattice 2015, the 33rd International
