Phase diagram of CeVSb3 under pressure and its dependence on pressure conditions
We present temperature dependent resistivity and ac-calorimetry measurements
of CeVSb3 under pressure up to 8 GPa in a Bridgman anvil cell modified to use a
liquid medium and in a diamond anvil cell using argon as a pressure medium,
respectively. We observe an initial increase of the ferromagnetic transition
temperature Tc with pressures up to 4.5 GPa, followed by decrease of Tc on
further increase of pressure and finally its disappearance, in agreement with
the Doniach model. We infer a ferromagnetic quantum critical point around 7 GPa
under hydrostatic pressure conditions from the extrapolation to 0 K of Tc and
the maximum of the A coefficient from low temperature fits of the resistivity
\rho (T)=\rho_{0}+AT^{n}. No superconductivity under pressure was observed down
to 0.35 K for this compound. In addition, differences in the Tc(P) behavior
when a slight uniaxial component is present are noticed and discussed and
correlated to choice of pressure medium
Pressure effects on superconducting properties of single-crystalline Co doped NaFeAs
Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements under external pressure
were performed on single-crystals NaFe1-xCoxAs (x=0, 0.01, 0.028, 0.075,
0.109). The maximum Tc enhanced by pressure in both underdoped and optimally
doped NaFe1-xCoxAs is the same, as high as 31 K. The overdoped sample with x =
0.075 also shows a positive pressure effect on Tc, and an enhancement of Tc by
13 K is achieved under pressure of 2.3 GPa. All the superconducting samples
show large positive pressure coefficient on superconductivity, being different
from Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. However, the superconductivity cannot be induced by
pressure in heavily overdoped non-superconducting NaFe0.891Co0.109As. These
results provide evidence for that the electronic structure is much different
between superconducting and heavily overdoped non-superconducting NaFe1-xCoxAs,
being consistent with the observation by angle-resolved photoemission

The UN in the lab
We consider two alternatives to inaction for governments combating terrorism, which we term Defense and Prevention. Defense consists of investing in resources that reduce the impact of an attack, and generates a negative externality to other governments, making their countries a more attractive objective for terrorists. In contrast, Prevention, which consists of investing in resources that reduce the ability of the terrorist organization to mount an attack, creates a positive externality by reducing the overall threat of terrorism for all. This interaction is captured using a simple 3×3 “Nested Prisoner’s Dilemma” game, with a single Nash equilibrium where both countries choose Defense. Due to the structure of this interaction, countries can benefit from coordination of policy choices, and international institutions (such as the UN) can be utilized to facilitate coordination by implementing agreements to share the burden of Prevention. We introduce an institution that implements a burden-sharing policy for Prevention, and investigate experimentally whether subjects coordinate on a cooperative strategy more frequently under different levels of cost sharing. In all treatments, burden sharing leaves the Prisoner’s Dilemma structure and Nash equilibrium of the game unchanged. We compare three levels of burden sharing to a baseline in a between-subjects design, and find that burden sharing generates a non-linear effect on the choice of the efficient Prevention strategy and overall performance. Only an institution supporting a high level of mandatory burden sharing generates a significant improvement in the use of the Prevention strategy
Market Power and Collusion on Interconnection Phone Market in Tunisia : What Lessons from International Experiences
We try in this paper to characterize the state of mobile phone market in Tunisia. Our study is based on a survey of foreign experience (Europe) in detecting collusive behavior and a comparison of the critical threshold of collusion between operators in developing countries like Tunisia. The market power is estimated based on the work of Parker Roller (1997) and the assumption of "Balanced Calling Pattern". We use then the model of Friedman (1971) to compare the critical threshold of collusion. We show that the "conduct parameter" measuring the intensity of competition is not null during the period 1993-2011. Results show also that collusion is easier on the Tunisian market that on the Algerian, Jordanian, or Moroccan one
Drivers of Health Care Expenditure: Does Baumol's Cost Disease Loom Large?
According to Baumol (1993) health care epitomises Baumol's cost disease. Sectors that suffer from Baumol's cost disease are characterised by slow productivity growth due to a high labour coefficient. As a result, unit costs of these sectors rise inexorably if the respective wages increase with productivity growth of the progressive industries such as manufacturing. Thus, according to Baumol (1993) the secular rise in health-care expenditure has been unavoidable. This present paper demonstrates that health care is contracted by Baumol's cost disease, but only to a minor extent. Consequently, policy-makers have more leeway to curbever-increasing health-care expenditure than is suggested by Baumol (1993) and other authors. In addition, we test the implications of Baumol's cost disease for health care by avoiding the well-known flaws in constructing medical price indices. Therefore, the adjusted Baumol variable derived in this paper is also extremely appropriate to test the validity of Baumol's cost diseases of other service industries such as education or the live performing arts. Additionally, our analysis suggests that health care is rather a necessity than a luxury at the national level, which conflicts with macroeconomic evidence provided in the relevant literature
Hydrothermal alteration of andesitic lava domes can lead to explosive volcanic behaviour
Dome-forming volcanoes are among the most hazardous volcanoes on Earth. Magmatic outgassing can be hindered if the permeability of a lava dome is reduced, promoting pore pressure augmentation and explosive behaviour. Laboratory data show that acid-sulphate alteration, common to volcanoes worldwide, can reduce the permeability on the sample lengthscale by up to four orders of magnitude and is the result of pore- and microfracture-filling mineral precipitation. Calculations using these data demonstrate that intense alteration can reduce the equivalent permeability of a dome by two orders of magnitude, which we show using numerical modelling to be sufficient to increase pore pressure. The fragmentation criterion shows that the predicted pore pressure increase is capable of fragmenting the majority of dome-forming materials, thus promoting explosive volcanism. It is crucial that hydrothermal alteration, which develops over months to years, is monitored at dome-forming volcanoes and is incorporated into real-time hazard assessments
Impact of family capital & social capital on youth entrepreneurship – a study of Uttarakhand state, India
The research paper intends to interpret how the three forms of family capital viz. family's financial capital, family's man power capital and family's human capital influences the career choice intention of students of HEI's of Uttarakhand, India. Additionally the study also evaluates the impact of student's individual social capital on his career intent. This is a quantitative study conducted at Uttarakhand state of India on a large sample of students studying in various professional courses of Uttarakhand. The research validates a positive relationship between the family's financial capital and higher education intention of students. The study found no influence of family's financial capital (measured as father's annual income), manpower capital (measured as family size) and human capital (measured as father's occupation) on career intentions of students. The study confirmed that there is a significant impact of students' social capital network span on his career intentions, especially in taking up entrepreneurship as a career choice
