    The breaking of chiral symmetry of light quarks at zero temperature in presence of strong quantizing magnetic fiels is studied using Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with Thomas-Fermi type semi-classical formalism.     Born-Regulated Gravity in Four Dimensions

    Previous work involving Born-regulated gravity theories in two dimensions is extended to four dimensions. The action we consider has two dimensionful parameters. Black hole solutions are studied for typical values of these parameters. For masses above a critical value determined in terms of these parameters, the event horizon persists. For masses below this critical value, the event horizon disappears, leaving a ``bare mass'', though of course no singularity.Comment: LaTeX, 15 pages, 2 figure

    Spin analog of the controlled Josephson charge current

    We propose a controlled Josephson spin current across the junction of two non-centrosymmetric superconductors like CePt_3Si. The Josephson spin current arises due to direction dependent tunneling matrix element and different momentum dependent phases of the triplet components of the gap function. Its modulation with the angle \xi between the noncentrosymmetric axes of two superconductors is proportional to \sin \xi.     An attempt has been made to give an overall idea of erosion-deposition at theBalari-Haldia-Gangra reach of the Hooghly estuary in India. The sediment transport relationships developed by van Rijn and AcKers- White have been tried. Calculation of bed-load transport has beenmade based on'bed material sizes, flow conditions, depth and width of the channels, during 1993-97 Comparison of the results indicates the discrepancies between calculated and observed quantum of deposition/erosion to the extent of 0.6 to 0 :8 times in case ofvan Rijn ' sequation and 0.8 to 1.8 times incase of Ackers-White's model.     Counting Giant Gravitons in AdS_3

    We quantize the set of all quarter BPS brane probe solutions in global AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4/K3 found in arxiv:0709.1168 [hep-th]. We show that, generically, these solutions give rise to states in discrete representations of the SL(2,R) WZW model on AdS_3. Our procedure provides us with a detailed description of the low energy 1/4 and 1/2 BPS sectors of string theory on this background. The 1/4 BPS partition function jumps as we move off the point in moduli space where the bulk theta angle and NS-NS fields vanish. We show that generic 1/2 BPS states are protected because they correspond to geodesics rather than puffed up branes. By exactly quantizing the simplest of the probes above, we verify our description of 1/4 BPS states and find agreement with the known spectrum of 1/2 BPS states of the boundary theory. We also consider the contribution of these probes to the elliptic genus and discuss puzzles, and their possible resolutions, in reproducing the elliptic genus of the symmetric product.Comment: 47 pages; (v2) references and minor clarifications adde

    Black Holes with a Massive Dilaton

    The modifications of dilaton black holes which result when the dilaton acquires a mass are investigated. We derive some general constraints on the number of horizons of the black hole and argue that if the product of the black hole charge QQ and the dilaton mass mm satisfies Qm<O(1)Q m < O(1) then the black hole has only one horizon. We also argue that for Qm>O(1)Q m > O(1) there may exist solutions with three horizons and we discuss the causal structure of such solutions.     Distinguishing Posed and Spontaneous Smiles by Facial Dynamics

    Smile is one of the key elements in identifying emotions and present state of mind of an individual. In this work, we propose a cluster of approaches to classify posed and spontaneous smiles using deep convolutional neural network (CNN) face features, local phase quantization (LPQ), dense optical flow and histogram of gradient (HOG). Eulerian Video Magnification (EVM) is used for micro-expression smile amplification along with three normalization procedures for distinguishing posed and spontaneous smiles. Although the deep CNN face model is trained with large number of face images, HOG features outperforms this model for overall face smile classification task. Using EVM to amplify micro-expressions did not have a significant impact on classification accuracy, while the normalizing facial features improved classification accuracy. Unlike many manual or semi-automatic methodologies, our approach aims to automatically classify all smiles into either `spontaneous' or `posed' categories, by using support vector machines (SVM).     N=2 Supersymmetric Sigma Models and D-branes

    We study D-branes of N=2 supersymmetric sigma models. Supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models with 2-dimensional target space have D0,D1,D2-branes, which are realized as A-,B-type supersymmetric boundary conditions on the worldsheet. When we embed the models in the string theory, the Kahler potential is restricted and leads to a 2-dim black hole metric with a dilaton background. The D-branes in this model are susy cycles and consistent with the analysis of conjugacy classes. The generalized metrics with U(n) isometry is proposed and dynamics on them are realized by linear sigma models. We investigate D-branes of the linear sigma models and compare the results with those in the nonlinear sigma models.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figure
