    A survey for high-redshift radio-loud quasars: optical spectroscopy of S > 0.2 Jy, flat-spectrum radio sources

    We present optical spectroscopic data for a complete sample of 161 S_5GHz >= 0.2 Jy, flat-spectrum radio sources. The sources were observed as part of a survey for high redshift, radio-loud quasars, and were selected for spectroscopic follow-up based on criteria of red optical colour and unresolved optical counterpart, as measured from APM scans of POSS-I plates. 13 objects from the spectroscopic sample were found to be radio-loud quasars with z > 3, of which two were previously known. We give positions, E (red) magnitudes, O-E colours, 5GHz radio fluxes, radio spectral indices, optical spectra and redshifts where possible for the spectroscopic sample. We also give finding charts for the z > 3 QSOs. The highest redshift object found is a QSO with z = 4.30 (GB1508+5714, the subject of an earlier Letter). The sample also contains a z = 3.05 QSO, GB1759+7539, which is optically very luminous (E=16.1). In addition, spectra are given for 18 S_5GHz >= 0.2 Jy, flat-spectrum radio sources that do not form part of the complete sample.Comment: 14 pages including tables and figures, except Figs. 3 and 4 (spectra) which are available from http://panisse.lbl.gov/public/isobelpage/ .     APM z >> 4 QSO survey: spectra and intervening absorption systems

    The APM multicolor survey for bright z > 4 objects, covering 2500 deg^2 of sky to m(R)~19, resulted in the discovery of thirty-one quasars with z > 4. High signal-to-noise optical spectrophotometry at 5A resolution has been obtained for the twenty-eight quasars easily accessible from the northern hemisphere. These spectra have been surveyed to create new samples of high redshift Lyman-limit systems, damped Lyman-alpha absorbers, and metal absorption systems (e.g. CIV and MgII). In this paper we present the spectra, together with line lists of the detected absorption systems. The QSOs display a wide variety of emission and absorption line characteristics, with 5 exhibiting broad absorption lines and one with extremely strong emission lines (BR2248-1242). Eleven candidate damped Ly-alpha absorption systems have been identified covering the redshift range 2.83.5). An analysis of the measured redshifts of the high ionization emission lines with the low ionization lines shows them to be blueshifted by 430+/-60 km/s. In a previous paper (Storrie-Lombardi et. al. 1994) we discussed the redshift evolution of the Lyman limit systems catalogued here. In subsequent papers we will discuss the properties of the Ly-alpha forest absorbers and the redshift and column density evolution of the damped Ly-alpha absorbers

    Review: Towards the agroecological management of ruminants, pigs and poultry through the development of sustainable breeding programmes. II. Breeding strategies

    Agroecology uses ecological processes and local resources rather than chemical inputs to develop productive and resilient livestock and crop production systems. In this context, breeding innovations are necessary to obtain animals that are both productive and adapted to a broad range of local contexts and diversity of systems. Breeding strategies to promote agroecological systems are similar for different animal species. However, current practices differ regarding the breeding of ruminants, pigs and poultry. Ruminant breeding is still an open system where farmers continue to choose their own breeds and strategies. Conversely, pig and poultry breeding is more or less the exclusive domain of international breeding companies which supply farmers with hybrid animals. Innovations in breeding strategies must therefore be adapted to the different species. In developed countries, reorienting current breeding programmes seems to be more effective than developing programmes dedicated to agroecological systems that will struggle to be really effective because of the small size of the populations currently concerned by such systems. Particular attention needs to be paid to determining the respective usefulness of cross-breeding v. straight breeding strategies of well-adapted local breeds. While cross-breeding may offer some immediate benefits in terms of improving certain traits that enable the animals to adapt well to local environmental conditions, it may be difficult to sustain these benefits in the longer term and could also induce an important loss of genetic diversity if the initial pure-bred populations are no longer produced. As well as supporting the value of within-breed diversity, we must preserve between-breed diversity in order to maintain numerous options for adaptation to a variety of production environments and contexts. This may involve specific public policies to maintain and characterize local breeds (in terms of both phenotypes and genotypes), which could be used more effectively if they benefited from the scientific and technical resources currently available for more common breeds. Last but not least, public policies need to enable improved information concerning the genetic resources and breeding tools available for the agroecological management of livestock production systems, and facilitate its assimilation by farmers and farm technicians

    Evolution of Lyman-limit absorption systems over the redshift range 0.40 < Z < 4.69

    We present the results of a study of 15 z > 4.2 QSOs that extend statistical studies of Lyman-limit absorption line systems [N(H I) ≥ 1.6 x 10^(17) cm^(- 2)] to the highest redshifts currently possible. This data set has been combined with homogeneous data sets of low-redshift Hubble Space Telescope observations and intermediate-redshift ground-based observations. Assuming a power law of the form N(z) = N 0(1 + z)^γ for the number density, we find γ = 1.55 and N_0 = 0.27, with N = 3.27 per unit redshift at z = 4. The >99.7% confidence limits for y are 2.37 and 0.82. For the first time this indicates intrinsic evolution of these absorbers for an Q = 1 universe (γ = 1/2 for no evolution). This result is marginally consistent with no evolution for n = 0 (γ = 1 for no evolution). These results differ significantly from those of Sargent, Steidel, & Boksenberg (1989) who found no intrinsic evolution in Lyman-limit systems up to z = 3.5, and Lanzetta (1991) who found much stronger evolution for z > 2.5. For z ≾ 2 the space density of Lyman limit systems [N(1.5) ≈ 1.1] and Mg II absorbers with rest equivalent width W_0 > 0.3 Å [N(1.5) ≈ 1.0] is almost identical. This supports the picture that Lyman-limit and Mg II absorbers are drawn from the same population

    Effect of semolina pudding prepared from starch branching enzyme IIa and b mutant wheat on glycaemic response in vitro and in vivo: a randomised controlled pilot study

    Refined starchy foods are usually rapidly digested, leading to poor glycaemic control, but not all starchy foods are the same. Complex carbohydrates like resistant starch (RS) have been shown to reduce the metabolic risk factors for chronic diseases such as hyperglycaemia and overweight. The aim of the project was to develop a semolina-based food made from a starch branching enzyme II (sbeIIa/b-AB) durum wheat mutant with a high RS content and to measure its glycaemic index using a double-blind randomised pilot study. We report here the amylose, RS and non-starch polysaccharide concentration of raw sbeIIa/b-AB and wild-type control (WT) semolina. We measured RS after cooking to identify a model food for in vivo testing. Retrograded sbeIIa/b-AB semolina showed a higher RS concentration than the WT control (RS = 4.87 ± 0.6 g per 100 g, 0.77 ± 0.34 g per 100 g starch DWB, respectively), so pudding was selected as the test food. Ten healthy participants consumed ∼50 g of total starch from WT and sbeIIa/b-AB pudding and a standard glucose drink. Capillary blood glucose concentrations were measured in the fasting and postprandial state (2 h): incremental area-under-the-curve (iAUC) and GI were calculated. We found no evidence of difference in GI between sbeIIa/b-AB pudding and the WT control, but the starch digestibility was significantly lower in sbeIIa/b-AB pudding compared to the WT control in vitro (C90 = 33.29% and 47.38%, respectively). Based on these results, novel sbeIIa/b-AB wheat foods will be used in future in vivo studies to test the effect of different RS concentrations and different food matrices on glycaemia
