Reverse propagation of femtosecond pulses in optical fibers
We present a numerical technique for reversing femtosecond pulse propagation in an optical fiber, such that given any output pulse it is possible to obtain the input pulse shape by numerically undoing all dispersion and nonlinear effects. The technique is tested against experimental results, and it is shown that it can be used for fiber output pulse optimization in both the anomalous and normal dispersion regimes
Propagation of temporal entanglement
The equations that govern the temporal evolution of two photons in the
Schr{\"o}dinger picture are derived, taking into account the effects of loss,
group-velocity dispersion, temporal phase modulation, linear coupling among
different optical modes, and four-wave mixing. Inspired by the formalism, we
propose the concept of quantum temporal imaging, which uses dispersive elements
and temporal phase modulators to manipulate the temporal correlation of two
entangled photons. We also present the exact solution of a two-photon vector
soliton, in order to demonstrate the ease of use and intuitiveness of the
proposed formulation.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Coupling and higher-order effects in the 12C(d,p)13C and 13C(p,d)12C reactions
Coupled channels calculations are performed for the 12C(d,p)13C and
13C(p,d)12C reactions between 7 and 60 MeV to study the effect of inelastic
couplings in transfer reactions. The effect of treating transfer beyond Born
approximation is also addressed. The coupling to the 12C 2+ state is found to
change the peak cross-section by up to 15 %. Effects beyond Born approximation
lead to a significant renormalization of the cross-sections, between 5 and 10 %
for deuteron energies above 10 MeV, and larger than 10 % for lower energies. We
also performed calculations including the remnant term in the transfer
operator, which has a small impact on the 12C(d,p)13C(g.s.) and
13C(p,d)12C(g.s.) reactions. Above 30 MeV deuteron energy, the effect of the
remnant term is larger than 10 % for the 12C(d,p)13C(3.09 MeV) reaction and is
found to increase with decreasing neutron separation energy for the 3.09 MeV
state of 13C. This is of importance for transfer reactions with weakly bound
nuclei.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Multifractality and scale invariance in human heartbeat dynamics
Human heart rate is known to display complex fluctuations. Evidence of
multifractality in heart rate fluctuations in healthy state has been reported
[Ivanov et al., Nature {\bf 399}, 461 (1999)]. This multifractal character
could be manifested as a dependence on scale or beat number of the probability
density functions (PDFs) of the heart rate increments. On the other hand, scale
invariance has been recently reported in a detrended analysis of healthy heart
rate increments [Kiyono et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 178103 (2004)]. In
this paper, we resolve this paradox by clarifying that the scale invariance
reported is actually exhibited by the PDFs of the sum of detrended healthy
heartbeat intervals taken over different number of beats, and demonstrating
that the PDFs of detrended healthy heart rate increments are scale dependent.
Our work also establishes that this scale invariance is a general feature of
human heartbeat dynamics, which is shared by heart rate fluctuations in both
healthy and pathological states

Age-related changes to lumbosacral spinal cord motoneurons that modulate bladder and bowel functions in male C57BL/6 mice
Incontinence and sexual dysfunction are often increased in the aged human population. In rats and mice the pattern of micturition and faecal clearance also changes with ageing and is suggestive of bladder and bowel dysfunction
