Rotating Liquid Drops: Plateaus Experiment Revisited
The dynamics of liquid drops rotating in another liquid were studied experimentally with an oil drop suspended in a neutral buoyancy tank. New stable shapes not predicted by the theory were observed
The CNGS Neutrino Beam
The CERN to Gran Sasso Neutrino beam (CNGS) was commissioned at CERN in early
August 2006 and was first sent at low intensity to Gran Sasso on August 17,
2006. The Borexino, LVD and OPERA experiments continued the commissioning of
their detectors and started taking data with practically no dead time. The CNGS

Transient growth in Taylor-Couette flow
Transient growth due to non-normality is investigated for the Taylor-Couette
problem with counter-rotating cylinders as a function of aspect ratio eta and
Reynolds number Re. For all Re < 500, transient growth is enhanced by
curvature, i.e. is greater for eta < 1 than for eta = 1, the plane Couette
limit. For fixed Re < 130 it is found that the greatest transient growth is
achieved for eta between the Taylor-Couette linear stability boundary, if it
exists, and one, while for Re > 130 the greatest transient growth is achieved
for eta on the linear stability boundary. Transient growth is shown to be
approximately 20% higher near the linear stability boundary at Re = 310, eta =
0.986 than at Re = 310, eta = 1, near the threshold observed for transition in
plane Couette flow. The energy in the optimal inputs is primarily meridional;
that in the optimal outputs is primarily azimuthal. Pseudospectra are
calculated for two contrasting cases. For large curvature, eta = 0.5, the
pseudospectra adhere more closely to the spectrum than in a narrow gap case,
eta = 0.99
UK utility data integration: overcoming schematic heterogeneity
In this paper we discuss syntactic, semantic and schematic issues which inhibit the integration of utility data in the UK. We then focus on the techniques employed within the VISTA project to overcome schematic heterogeneity. A Global
Schema based architecture is employed. Although automated approaches to Global Schema definition were attempted
the heterogeneities of the sector were too great. A manual approach to Global Schema definition was employed. The
techniques used to define and subsequently map source utility data models to this schema are discussed in detail. In order to ensure a coherent integrated model, sub and cross domain validation issues are then highlighted. Finally the proposed framework and data flow for schematic integration is introduced
The 8Li Calibration Source for the Sudbury Neutrino Obervatory
A calibration source employing 8Li (t_1/2 = 0.838s) has been developed for
use with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). This source creates a spectrum
of beta particles with an energy range similar to that of the SNO 8B solar
neutrino signal. The source is used to test the SNO detector's energy response,
position reconstruction and data reduction algorithms. The 8Li isotope is
created using a deuterium-tritium neutron generator in conjunction with a 11B
target, and is carried to a decay chamber using a gas/aerosol transport system.
The decay chamber detects prompt alpha particles by gas scintillation in
coincidence with the beta particles which exit through a thin stainless steel
wall. A description is given of the production, transport, and tagging
techniques along with a discussion of the performance and application of the

Transition from the Couette-Taylor system to the plane Couette system
We discuss the flow between concentric rotating cylinders in the limit of
large radii where the system approaches plane Couette flow. We discuss how in
this limit the linear instability that leads to the formation of Taylor
vortices is lost and how the character of the transition approaches that of
planar shear flows. In particular, a parameter regime is identified where
fractal distributions of life times and spatiotemporal intermittency occur.
Experiments in this regime should allow to study the characteristics of shear
flow turbulence in a closed flow geometry.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Inhibition of Vaginal Lactobacilli by a Bacteriocin-Like Inhibitor Produced by Enterococcus faecium 62-6: Potential Significance for Bacterial Vaginosis
Objective: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is characterized by a shift in vaginal tract ecology, which includes a decrease in the concentration and/or prevalence of facultative lactobacilli. Currently, mechanisms which could account for the disappearance of lactobacilli are not well understood. The objective of this study was to determine whether vaginal streptococci/enterococci can produce bacteriocin-like inhibitors antagonistic to vaginal lactobacilli. Methods: Seventy strains of vaginal streptococci or enterococci were tested for antagonistic activities against vaginal lactobacilli using the deferred antagonism technique. Results: One strain, Enterococcus faecium 62-6, which strongly inhibited growth of lactobacilli was selected for further characterization. The spectrum of inhibitory activity of strain 62-6 included Gram-positive organisms from the vaginal environment, although native lactobacilli from the same host were resistant to inhibitor action. Following growth inMRSbroth the strain 62-6 inhibitor was shown to be heat- (100â, 30 minutes), cold- (4â, less than 114 days) and pH- (4â7) stable. The sensitivity of inhibitor-containing supernatants to pepsin and α-chymotrypsin suggested an essential proteinaceous component. The inhibitor was sensitive to lipase but resistant to lysozyme. Dialysis of inhibitor-containing culture supernatants suggested a molecular mass greater than 12 000 Da. All physicochemical properties were consistent with its classification as a bacteriocin-like inhibitor. Kinetic assays demonstrated a sharp onset of inhibitor production coinciding with a concentration of 62-6 of 10(7) cfu/ml, suggesting that production may be regulated by quorum sensing. Conclusions: These results may have clinical significance as a novel mechanism to account for the decline of vaginal Lactobacillus populations and contribute to both the establishment and recurrence of BV
Temporal Modulation of Traveling Waves in the Flow Between Rotating Cylinders With Broken Azimuthal Symmetry
The effect of temporal modulation on traveling waves in the flows in two
distinct systems of rotating cylinders, both with broken azimuthal symmetry,
has been investigated. It is shown that by modulating the control parameter at
twice the critical frequency one can excite phase-locked standing waves and
standing-wave-like states which are not allowed when the system is rotationally
symmetric. We also show how previous theoretical results can be extended to

How to humiliate and shame: A reporter's guide to the power of the mugshot
This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in Social Semiotics, 24(1), 56-87, 2014, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/The judicial photograph â the âmugshotâ â is a ubiquitous and instantly recognisable form, appearing in the news media, on the internet, on book covers, law enforcement noticeboards and in many other mediums. This essay attempts to situate the mugshot in a historical and theoretical context to explain the explicit and implicit meaning of the genre as it has developed, focussing in particular on their use in the UK media in late modernity. The analysis is based on the author's reflexive practice as a journalist covering crime in the national news media for 30 years and who has used mugshots to illustrate stories for their explicit and specific content. The author argues that the visual limitations of the standardised âhead and shouldersâ format of the mugshot make it a robust subject for analysing the changing meaning of images over time. With little variation in the image format, arguments for certain accreted layers of signification are easier to make. Within a few years of the first appearance of the mugshot form in the mid-19th century, it was adopted and adapted as a research tool by scientists and criminologists. While the positivist scientists claimed empirical objectivity we can now see that mugshots played a part in the construction of subjective notions of âthe otherâ, âthe lesserâ or âsub-humanâ on the grounds of class, race and religion. These dehumanising ideas later informed the theorists and bureaucrats of National Socialist ideology from the 1920s to 1940s. The author concludes that once again the mugshot has become, in certain parts of the media, a signifier widely used to exclude or deride certain groups. In late modernity, the part of the media that most use mugshots â the tabloid press and increasingly tabloid TV â is part of a neo-liberal process that, in a conscious commercial appeal to the paying audience, seeks to separate rather than unify wider society
Paradoxical transitions to instabilities in hydromagnetic Couette-Taylor flows
By methods of modern spectral analysis, we rigorously find distributions of
eigenvalues of linearized operators associated with an ideal hydromagnetic
Couette-Taylor flow. Transition to instability in the limit of vanishing
magnetic field has a discontinuous change compared to the Rayleigh stability
criterion for hydrodynamical flows, which is known as the
