There and back again: migration in freshwater fishes

Animal migration is an amazing phenomenon that has fascinated humans for long. Many freshwater fishes also show remarkable migrations, whereof the spectacular mass migrations of salmonids from the spawning streams are the most well known and well studied. However, recent studies have shown that migration occurs in a range of freshwater fish taxa from many different habitats. In this review we focus on the causes and consequences of migration in freshwater fishes. We start with an introduction of concepts and categories of migration, and then address the evolutionary causes that drive individuals to make these migratory journeys. The basis for the decision of an individual fish to migrate or stay resident is an evaluation of the costs and benefits of different strategies to maximize its lifetime reproductive effort. We provide examples by discussing our own work on the causes behind seasonal migration in a cyprinid fish, roach (Rutilus rutilus (L., 1758)), within this framework. We then highlight different adaptations that allow fish to migrate over sometimes vast journeys across space, including capacity for orientation, osmoregulation, and efficient energy expenditure. Following this we consider the consequences of migration in freshwater fish from ecological, evolutionary, and conservation perspectives, and finally, we detail some of the recent developments in the methodologies used to collect data on fish migration and how these could be used in future research

Ricostruzione Inventario Progetto

Nel corpo della città la distruzione sospende il tempo e, nella simultaneità di sguardi che la rovina produce, nasce la visione della ricostruzione come ricerca di potenzialità ancora inespresse. I contributi raccolti nel libro prendono le mosse dal tema della ricostruzione per affrontare il problema più ampio della definizione di immaginari capaci di assumere i conflitti come parte attiva di un nuovo disegno, dove le condizioni relazionali costituiscono la trama per una narrazione discontinua, ma radicata nello spazio. La forza produttiva della memoria alimenta il pensiero progettuale, innestando gli interventi su un terreno trattato non come suolo inerte, bensì come sistema stratificato di segni, rintracciabili e misurabili attraverso un inventario operativo. La catastrofe è intesa come momento di distruzione materiale, ma anche, etimologicamente, come rivolgimento o rottura di un equilibrio morfologico e strutturale. In essa è così compresa la possibilità di permanenza dell’immateriale e dell’immaginazione produttiva, che dal frammento, come impossibilità di ripetere l’origine, costruisce nuovi ordini, architetture, città e territori. Crisi e rinascita, dunque, cancellazioni e nuove visioni. Ciascuna distruzione definisce un limite che necessita di risposte, nella dicotomia tra autorialità del progetto e lavoro collettivo. La riflessione su questi temi chiama in campo l’urgenza del presente e l’incertezza delle prospettive future. A queste istanze il progetto è chiamato a rispondere definendo strategie per una idea di città e ricostruendo, o ritrovando tra linee interrotte, architetture per la città.In the body of the city, destruction suspends time and, in the simultaneity of views that ruin produces, the vision of reconstruction is born as a search for still unexpressed potential. The contributions collected in the book are based on the theme of reconstruction to address the wider problem of defining imagery that can accept conflict as an active part of a new design, where the relational conditions constitute the framework for an intermittent narration rooted in space. The productive force of the memory fuels the thought behind the design, by engaging the interventions on a terrain treated not as inert ground, but as a layered system of signs, traceable and measurable through an operative inventory. Catastrophe is interpreted as a moment of material destruction, but also, etymologically, as an upheaval or breakdown of a morphological and structural equilibrium. It thus includes the possibility of the permanence of the immaterial and productive imagination, which from a fragment, in the impossibility of repeating the origin, builds new orders, architecture, cities and territories. Crisis and rebirth, therefore, cancellations and fresh visions. Each destruction defines a limit that demands answers in the dichotomy between authorship of a project and collective labour. Reflection on these themes brings up the urgency of the present and the uncertainty of future prospects. In these instances a project is asked to respond by defining strategies for an idea of the city and reconstructing an architecture for the city, or rediscovering one among the broken lines

Costruiamo una città. Architettura espressionista tedesca nel secondo dopoguerra.

Questa raccolta ha per tema una breve esplorazione su cosa intendere ancora oggi per «espressionismo» nell’ambito della composizione architettonica, quasi come se questo concetto possa persistere anche sotto forma di una possibile riserva mentale. Questa funzione deviante dell’architettura, oltre alla sua attribuzione storica nelle avanguardie artistiche del Novecento, appartiene a una tradizione compositiva in parte latente e in parte necessaria, protrattasi anche nel secondo dopoguerra nella Germania della ricostruzione, ma anche in modi e luoghi inattesi. L’ipotesi è che una tale linea compositiva possa ancora fungere da chiave interpretativa dell’attuale condizione di sospensione di giudizio — nei ruoli e nell’espressione — che l’architettura oggi riveste. Un tema importante da affrontare in un dottorato di ricerca con esperienze comuni tra i quattro dottorati italiani in composizione architettonica (Venezia-IUAV, Bari-Politecnico, Napoli-Federico II, Roma-La Sapienza). Se da una parte vengono rivendicate tradizioni di ricerca consolidate e fondative, per altri versi ruoli nuovi e istanze della società e della storia si affacciano. Sono «nuovi temi dominanti» ai quali l’architettura è chiamata, ben al di là delle parole d’ordine oggi correnti

Aerodynamic Analysis of Flows with Low Mach- and Reynolds-Number under Consideration and Forecast of Transition on the Example of a Glider

For the simulation of low Reynolds- and Mach number flows, a boundary layer code in combination with a database method are coupled with an unstructured RANS code. The technique is validated in 2D using a glider airfoil and in 3D for a glider, showing good agreement with experiments and a well-validated 2D design code

Novyj Vkhutemas. Arcaiche approssimazioni per un centro studi cosmopolita dedicato all’industria artistica a Mosca. Novyj Vkhutemas. Archaic approximations for a cosmopolitan study center dedicated to the art industry in Moscow.

The project is a research contribution to the seminar “VKhUTEMAS 100. Space, project, teaching” held at the Doctoral School of the IUAV in 2020-202, in collaboration with those institutions in Moscow which inherited the VKhUTEMAS’ intellectual legacy. This architectural design aims to translate a “typological program” in multiple spatial occasions. Blowing up the studio-gallery-museum triad, according to Harald Szeemann’s punctual definition, it is still highly topical in the process of research, production and transmission in the culture industry. Such a perspective would help us to deconstruct the big empty boxes of contemporary museums in spaces for a new teaching and research arts community
