    Particle motion in the field of a five-dimensional charged black hole

    In this paper, we have investigated the geodesics of neutral particles near a five-dimensional charged black hole using a comparative approach. The effective potential method is used to determine the location of the horizons and to study radial and circular trajectories. This also helps us to analyze the stability of radial and circular orbits. The radius of the innermost stable circular orbits have also been determined. Contrary to the case of massive particles for which, the circular orbits may have up to eight possible values of specific radius, we find that the photons will only have two distinct values for the specific radii of circular trajectories. Finally we have used the dynamical systems analysis to determine the critical points and the nature of the trajectories for the timelike and null geodesics.Comment: 15 pages, accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Scienc

    The Status of High School Scheduling in Illinois

    The purposes of this descriptive study were to determine the types of scheduling models being used in Illinois high schools, identify scheduling trends, and determine reasons for adopting scheduling changes. The principals of Illinois’ 635 public high schools were surveyed, and a 100% response rate was achieved after two rounds of questionnaires were mailed and telephone surveys were conducted of remaining nonrespondents. Nearly three-fourths of Illinois high schools utilize a traditional daily- period schedule, but trends indicate increasing numbers of schools are adopting or considering block-of-time models. Principals implementing block-of-time schedules noted a variety of reasons for this change, including the following: increasing student electives, improving the quality of education, implementing varied instructional strategies, increasing time for learning, and improving the building climate

    In the five dimensional Kaluza Klein (KK) theory there is a well known class of static and electromagnetic--free KK--equations characterized by a naked singularity behavior, namely the Generalized Schwarzschild solution (GSS). We present here a set of interior solutions of five dimensional KK--equations. These equations have been numerically integrated to match the GSS in the vacuum. The solutions are candidates to describe the possible interior perfect fluid source of the exterior GSS metric and thus they can be models for stars for static, neutral astrophysical objects in the ordinary (four dimensional) spacetime.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures.     Capture cross section of magnetized particle (with nonzero magnetic moment) by braneworld black hole in uniform magnetic field is considered. The magnetic moment of particle was chosen as it was done by \citet{rs99} and for the simplicity particle with zero electric charge is chosen.     The Pioneer Anomaly

    Radio-metric Doppler tracking data received from the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft from heliocentric distances of 20-70 AU has consistently indicated the presence of a small, anomalous, blue-shifted frequency drift uniformly changing with a rate of ~6 x 10^{-9} Hz/s. Ultimately, the drift was interpreted as a constant sunward deceleration of each particular spacecraft at the level of a_P = (8.74 +/- 1.33) x 10^{-10} m/s^2. This apparent violation of the Newton's gravitational inverse-square law has become known as the Pioneer anomaly; the nature of this anomaly remains unexplained. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of the physical properties of the anomaly and the conditions that led to its detection and characterization. We review various mechanisms proposed to explain the anomaly and discuss the current state of efforts to determine its nature. A comprehensive new investigation of the anomalous behavior of the two Pioneers has begun recently. The new efforts rely on the much-extended set of radio-metric Doppler data for both spacecraft in conjunction with the newly available complete record of their telemetry files and a large archive of original project documentation. As the new study is yet to report its findings, this review provides the necessary background for the new results to appear in the near future. In particular, we provide a significant amount of information on the design, operations and behavior of the two Pioneers during their entire missions, including descriptions of various data formats and techniques used for their navigation and radio-science data analysis. As most of this information was recovered relatively recently, it was not used in the previous studies of the Pioneer anomaly, but it is critical for the new investigation.Comment: 165 pages, 40 figures, 16 tables; accepted for publication in Living Reviews in Relativit
