A new model to support the personalised management of a quality e-commerce service
The paper presents an aiding model to support the management of a high quality e-commerce service. The approach focuses on the service quality aspects related to customer relationship management (CRM). Knowing the individual characteristics of a customer, it is possible to supply a personalised and high quality service. A segmentation model, based on the "relationship evolution" between users and Web site, is developed. The method permits the provision of a specific service management for each user segment. Finally, some preliminary experimental results for a sport-clothing industry application are described
A New Forecasting Model for the Diffusion of ISO 9000 Standard Certifications in European Countries
ISO 9000 standards for quality system management are involving a higher and higher number of enterprises and organizations. This paper presents a detailed analysis of certification diffusion in Italy and in some European countries with similar economic structures. Benchmarking and evolution forecasts are based on the "logistic model", traditionally used for studying biological growth phenomena. The presentation is supported by many empirical data, which show that, in many countries, the phenomenon is going to be close to saturation. Finally, some considerations about new developments, after the present "certification era", are proposed
Strategic Debt in Vertical Relationships
We study a vertical relationship between two firms, and we show that the extent of the downstream firm's borrowing affects the contract offered by the upstream firm. We establish a negative relationship between the level of debt and the downstream firm's probability of bankrupt. We also show that, unless the interest rate is very high, there exists a conflict of interest between the upstream and the downstream firm: the latter wants to take on more debt than the former would like it to.We interpret this finding as an explanation of the constraint imposed by franchisors on the debt level of their franchisees.Contract Theory, Capital Structure, Franchise

Not only P-glycoprotein: amplification of the ABCB1-containing chromosome region 7q21 confers multidrug resistance upon cancer cells by coordinated overexpression of an assortment of resistance-related proteins
The development of drug resistance continues to be a dominant hindrance toward curative cancer treatment.
Overexpression of a wide-spectrum of ATP-dependent efflux pumps, and in particular of ABCB1 (P-glycoprotein
or MDR1) is a well-known resistance mechanism for a plethora of cancer chemotherapeutics including for example
taxenes, anthracyclines, Vinca alkaloids, and epipodopyllotoxins, demonstrated by a large array of published
papers, both in tumor cell lines and in a variety of tumors, including various solid tumors and hematological
malignancies. Upon repeated or even single dose treatment of cultured tumor cells or tumors in vivo with
anti-tumor agents such as paclitaxel and doxorubicin, increased ABCB1 copy number has been demonstrated,
resulting from chromosomal amplification events at 7q11.2-21 locus, leading to marked P-glycoprotein overexpression,
and multidrug resistance (MDR). Clearly however, additional mechanisms such as single nucleotide
polymorphisms (SNPs) and epigenetic modifications have shown a role in the overexpression of ABCB1 and of
other MDR efflux pumps. However, notwithstanding the design of 4 generations of ABCB1 inhibitors and the
wealth of information on the biochemistry and substrate specificity of ABC transporters, translation of this vast
knowledge from the bench to the bedside has proven to be unexpectedly difficult.
Many studies show that upon repeated treatment schedules of cell cultures or tumors with taxenes and anthracyclines
as well as other chemotherapeutic drugs, amplification, and/or overexpression of a series of genes
genomically surrounding the ABCB1 locus, is observed. Consequently, altered levels of other proteins may
contribute to the establishment of the MDR phenotype, and lead to poor clinical outcome. Thus, the genes
contained in this ABCB1 amplicon including ABCB4, SRI, DBF4, TMEM243, and RUNDC3B are overexpressed in
many cancers, and especially in MDR tumors, while TP53TG1 and DMTF1 are bona fide tumor suppressors. This
review describes the role of these genes in cancer and especially in the acquisition of MDR, elucidates possible
connections in transcriptional regulation (co-amplification/repression) of genes belonging to the same ABCB1
amplicon region, and delineates their novel emerging contributions to tumor biology and possible strategies to
overcome cancer MDR
Density of States and Critical Behavior of the Coulomb Glass
We present zero-temperature simulations for the single-particle density of
states of the Coulomb glass. Our results in three dimensions are consistent
with the Efros and Shklovskii prediction for the density of states.
Finite-temperature Monte Carlo simulations show no sign of a thermodynamic
glass transition down to low temperatures, in disagreement with mean-field
theory. Furthermore, the random-displacement formulation of the model undergoes
a transition into a distorted Wigner crystal for a surprisingly broad range of

Engineering exotic phases for topologically-protected quantum computation by emulating quantum dimer models
We use a nonperturbative extended contractor renormalization (ENCORE) method
for engineering quantum devices for the implementation of topologically
protected quantum bits described by an effective quantum dimer model on the
triangular lattice. By tuning the couplings of the device, topological
protection might be achieved if the ratio between effective two-dimer
interactions and flip amplitudes lies in the liquid phase of the phase diagram
of the quantum dimer model. For a proposal based on a quantum Josephson
junction array [L. B. Ioffe {\it et al.}, Nature (London) {\bf 415}, 503
(2002)] our results show that optimal operational temperatures below 1 mK can
only be obtained if extra interactions and dimer flips, which are not present
in the standard quantum dimer model and involve three or four dimers, are
included. It is unclear if these extra terms in the quantum dimer Hamiltonian
destroy the liquid phase needed for quantum computation. Minimizing the effects
of multi-dimer terms would require energy scales in the nano-Kelvin regime. An
alternative implementation based on cold atomic or molecular gases loaded into
optical lattices is also discussed, and it is shown that the small energy
scales involved--implying long operational times--make such a device
impractical. Given the many orders of magnitude between bare couplings in
devices, and the topological gap, the realization of topological phases in
quantum devices requires careful engineering and large bare interaction scales.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
