Sensitivity study of dynamics variability for mild-carbon steel structures affected by corrosion
Background: Corrosion propagation mainly occurs due to environmental conditions and to the absence of adequate maintenance. The corrosion propagation affects the structural performances of slender and thin structures, in particular in the case of structure very sensitive to the wind action and its dynamical phenomena, because commonly they are designed with a precise optimization of the stiffness/mass ratio. The static and dynamic wind action represent an immediate safety hazard in the case of structural stiffness and mass reduction due to the corrosion depth. Objective: This paper discusses the dynamics behavior variability due to the corrosion depth propagation for two significant examples of slender and thin structure (i.e. tower and truss roof). Methods: The structures assumed as case of study are made of mild carbon. The corrosion depth variability was estimated based on literature references. The structural natural frequencies and modal shapes are assumed as significant magnitudes to discuss the effect of the corrosion on the structural elements. Results: Results have shown that the corrosion depth gives a significant reduction of frequencies and modification of modal shapes. Conclusion: Results have shown that the corrosion depth affect the structural behavior long before a structural collapse. It suggests that a monitoring must be done to estimate the structure reliability for the Serviceability limit state under Characteristic design loads
Separating the North and South Pacific Meridional Modes Contributions to ENSO and Tropical Decadal Variability
North and South Pacific Meridional Modes (NPMM and SPMM) are known precursors of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Tropical Pacific decadal variability (TPDV). However, the relative importance of these precursors and the timescale on which they impact the tropics remain unclear. Using a 30-member ensemble of the Community Earth System Model as the control climate, we generate two additional members where the NPMM and SPMM are selectively suppressed. We find that both meridional modes energize the tropical variance independently on different timescales. The absence of NPMM leads to a significant reduction of the tropical interannual variability (~35%), while the absence of the SPMM has no appreciable impact on ENSO but significantly reduces the TPDV (~30%). While the relative importance of the NPMM and SPMM may be model dependent, the stochastic atmospheric variability in the extratropics that energizes the meridional modes emerges as a key source of TPDV
Variation in the μ-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) moderates the influence of early maternal care on fearful attachment
There is evidence that both early experience and genetic variation play a role in influencing sensitivity to social rejection. In this
study, we aimed at ascertaining if the A118G polymorphism of the k-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1) moderates the impact of early
maternal care on fearful attachment, a personality trait strongly related to rejection sensitivity. In 112 psychiatric patients, early
maternal care and fearful attachment were measured using the Parental Bonding Inventory and the Relationship Questionnaire
(RQ), respectively. The pattern emerging from the RQ data was a crossover interaction between genotype and maternal caregiving.
Participants expressing the minor 118 G allele had similar and relatively high scores on fearful attachment regardless of
the quality of maternal care. By contrast, early experience made a major difference for participants carrying the A/A genotype.
Those who recalled higher levels of maternal care reported the lowest levels of fearful attachment whereas those who recalled
lower levels of maternal care scored highest on fearful attachment. Our data fit well with the differential susceptibility model
which stipulates that plasticity genes would make some individuals more responsive than others to the negative consequences of
adversity and to the benefits of environmental support and enrichment
Effectiveness of clozapine and olanzapine: a comparison in severe, psychotically ill patients
The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectivenessof clozapine and olanzapine in the treatment of schizophrenicpatients. Either clozapine or olanzapine signifcantly ameliorated positive symptoms, but only clozapine was effective in reducinganxiety and hallucinations, while olanzapine was more effective in reducing negative symptoms, such as mannerism and posturing, blunted affect and emotional withdrawal. Olanzapine-treated patients obtained significantly higher GAF scores than clozapine-treated patients and more frequently participated in rehabilitative programmes. In conclusio, olanzapine therapy has surprisingly been shown to be more effective than clozapine in improving social and working skills
Genetics influences drug consumption in medication overuse headache, not in migraine. Evidence from Wolframin His611Arg polymorphism analysis
Background: The Wolframin His611Arg polymorphism can influence drug consumption in psychiatric patients with impulsive addictive behavior. This cross-sectional study aims to assess the prevalence of the Wolframin His611Arg polymorphism in MOH, a secondary headache belonging to the spectrum of addictive disorders, episodic migraine (EM), and healthy subjects (HS), and its influence on drug consumption. Methods: One-hundred and seventy-two EM, 107 MOH, and 83 HS were enrolled and genotyped for the Wolframin His611Arg polymorphism. Subjects were classified as homozygous for allele His (H/H subjects), homozygous for allele Arg (R/R subjects), and heterozygous (H/R subjects), regrouped as R/R and carriers of allele H (non-R/R), and matched for clinical data. Results: There were no differences in allelic distributions between the three groups (p = 0.19). Drug consumption and other clinical characteristics were not influenced by the Wolframin His611Arg polymorphism (p = 0.42; β = 0.04) in the EM group. Among the MOH population, R/R subjects consumed more analgesics (p < 0.0001; β = −0.38), particularly combination drugs (p = 0.0001; d = 2.32). Discussion: The Wolframin His611Arg polymorphism has a similar prevalence between the MOH, EM, and HS groups. The presence of the R/R genotype does not influence symptomatic drug consumption in EM, whereas it determines an increased use of symptomatic drugs in the MOH group, in particular combination drugs (i.e., drugs containing psychoactive compounds). Conclusions: Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the Wolframin His611Arg polymorphism plays its effect only in the MOH population, influencing the impulsivity control underlying addictive behavior
The water supercooled regime as described by four common water models
The temperature scale of simple water models in general does not coincide
with the natural one. Therefore, in order to make a meaningful evaluation of
different water models a temperature rescaling is necessary. In this paper we
introduce a rescaling using the melting temperature and the temperature
corresponding to the maximum of the heat capacity to evaluate four common water
models (TIP4P-Ew, TIP4P-2005, TIP5P-Ew and Six-Sites) in the supercooled
regime. Although all the models show the same general qualitative behavior, the
TIP5P-Ew appears as the best representation of the supercooled regime when the
rescaled temperature is used. We also analyze, using thermodynamic arguments,
the critical nucleus size for ice growth. Finally, we speculate on the possible
reasons why atomistic models do not usually crystalize while the coarse grained
mW model do crystallize.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Fabrication of Billet from Aluminum Alloys AA 2011-T3/7075 Chips through Friction Stir Consolidation
Recently evolving Solid-State Recycling (SSR) techniques have shown promising features to recycle metals scraps more efficiently compared to remelting-based approaches. Among these SSR methods, Friction Stir Consolidation (FSC) has been successfully tested to transform metals chips directly into semi or final solid products. Therefore, researchers explored FSC critical process parameters and their subsequent effects on quality in terms of the mechanical and metallurgical properties of the billet. All the previous studies of FSC were limited to developing billet of mono materials. Therefore, in this research, an attempt was made to go beyond the idea of recycling; in fact, a billet of two dissimilar aluminum alloys AA 7075 and AA 2011-T3 out of chips was obtained. The mechanical and metallurgical properties were assessed through the Vickers hardness measurements and microstructure analysis. The experimental results of this research illustrate that the FSC process is a feasible approach to develop a billet of dissimilar materials with achieving quality closer to the corresponding billet of mono-material
