Magnetic field resistant quantum interferences in bismuth nanowires based Josephson junctions
We investigate proximity induced superconductivity in micrometer-long bismuth
nanowires con- nected to superconducting electrodes with a high critical field.
At low temperature we measure a supercurrent that persists in magnetic fields
as high as the critical field of the electrodes (above 11 T). The critical
current is also strongly modulated by the magnetic field. In certain samples we
find regular, rapid SQUID-like periodic oscillations occurring up to high
fields. Other samples ex- hibit less periodic but full modulations of the
critical current on Tesla field scales, with field-caused extinctions of the
supercurrent. These findings indicate the existence of low dimensionally, phase
coherent, interfering conducting regions through the samples, with a subtle
interplay between orbital and spin contributions. We relate these surprising
results to the electronic properties of the surface states of bismuth, strong
Rashba spin-orbit coupling, large effective g factors, and their effect on the
induced superconducting correlations.Comment: 5 page
Direct measurement of the phase coherence length in a GaAs/GaAlAs square network
The low temperature magnetoconductance of a large array of quantum
coherentloops exhibits Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak oscillations which
periodicitycorresponds to 1/2 flux quantum per loop.We show that the
measurement of the harmonics content in a square networkprovides an accurate
way to determine the electron phase coherence length in units of the
lattice length without any adjustableparameters.We use this method to determine
in a network realised from a 2Delectron gas (2DEG) in a GaAS/GaAlAs
heterojunction. The temperaturedependence follows a power law from
1.3 K to 25 mK with nosaturation, as expected for 1D diffusive electronic
motion andelectron-electron scattering as the main decoherence mechanism.Comment: Additional experimental data in version

This paper looks at the physical characteristics of acromegaly, the origin of Mr Punch and the development of caricature linking them together in the acromegalic caricature that now has a life of its own
Probing microwave fields and enabling in-situ experiments in a transmission electron microscope.
A technique is presented whereby the performance of a microwave device is evaluated by mapping local field distributions using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM). We demonstrate the method by measuring the polarisation state of the electromagnetic fields produced by a microstrip waveguide as a function of its gigahertz operating frequency. The forward and backward propagating electromagnetic fields produced by the waveguide, in a specimen-free experiment, exert Lorentz forces on the propagating electron beam. Importantly, in addition to the mapping of dynamic fields, this novel method allows detection of effects of microwave fields on specimens, such as observing ferromagnetic materials at resonance
Dispersively detected Pauli Spin-Blockade in a Silicon Nanowire Field-Effect Transistor
We report the dispersive readout of the spin state of a double quantum dot
formed at the corner states of a silicon nanowire field-effect transistor. Two
face-to-face top-gate electrodes allow us to independently tune the charge
occupation of the quantum dot system down to the few-electron limit. We measure
the charge stability of the double quantum dot in DC transport as well as
dispersively via in-situ gate-based radio frequency reflectometry, where one
top-gate electrode is connected to a resonator. The latter removes the need for
external charge sensors in quantum computing architectures and provides a
compact way to readout the dispersive shift caused by changes in the quantum
capacitance during interdot charge transitions. Here, we observe Pauli
spin-blockade in the high-frequency response of the circuit at finite magnetic
fields between singlet and triplet states. The blockade is lifted at higher
magnetic fields when intra-dot triplet states become the ground state
configuration. A lineshape analysis of the dispersive phase shift reveals
furthermore an intradot valley-orbit splitting of 145 eV.
Our results open up the possibility to operate compact CMOS technology as a
singlet-triplet qubit and make split-gate silicon nanowire architectures an
ideal candidate for the study of spin dynamics
The key physical parameters governing frictional dissipation in a precipitating atmosphere
Precipitation generates small-scale turbulent air flows the energy of which
ultimately dissipates to heat. The power of this process has previously been
estimated to be around 2-4 W m-2 in the tropics: a value comparable in
magnitude to the dynamic power of the global circulation. Here we suggest that
this previous power estimate is approximately double the true figure. Our
result reflects a revised evaluation of the mean precipitation path length Hp.
We investigate the dependence of Hp on surface temperature,relative
humidity,temperature lapse rate and degree of condensation in the ascending
air. We find that the degree of condensation,defined as the relative change of
the saturated water vapor mixing ratio in the region of condensation, is a
major factor determining Hp. We estimate from theory that the mean large-scale
rate of frictional dissipation associated with total precipitation in the
tropics lies between 1 and 2 W m-2 and show that our estimate is supported by
empirical evidence. We show that under terrestrial conditions frictional
dissipation constitutes a minor fraction of the dynamic power of
condensation-induced atmospheric circulation,which is estimated to be at least
2.5 times larger. However,because Hp increases with surface temperature Ts, the
rate of frictional dissipation would exceed that of condensation-induced
dynamics, and thus block major circulation, at Ts >~320 K in a moist adiabatic

Assessment of the potential in vivo ecotoxicity of Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (DWNTs) in water, using the amphibian Ambystoma mexicanum
Because of their specific properties (mechanical, electrical, etc), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are being assessed for inclusion in many manufactured products. Due to their massive production and number of potential applications, the impact of CNTs on the environment must be taken into consideration. The present investigation evaluates the ecotoxic potential of CNTs in the amphibian larvae (Ambystoma mexicanum). Acute toxicity and genotoxicity were analysed after 12 days of exposure in laboratory conditions. The genotoxic effects were analysed by scoring the micronucleated erythrocytes in the
circulating blood of the larvae according to the French standard micronucleus assay. The results obtained in the present study demonstrated that CNTs are neither acutely toxic nor genotoxic to larvae whatever the CNTs concentration in the water, although black masses of CNTs were observed inside the gut. In the increasing economical context of CNTs, complementary studies must be undertaken, especially including mechanistic and environmental investigations
THE COST STRUCTURE OF MICROFINANCE INSTITUTIONS IN EASTERN EUROPE AND CENTRAL ASIA
Microfinance institutions are important, particularly in developing countries, because they expand the frontier of financial intermediation by providing loans to those traditionally excluded from formal financial markets. This paper presents the first systematic statistical examination of the performance of MFIs operating in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. A cost function is estimated for MFIs in the region from 1999-2004. First, the presence of subsidies is found to be associated with higher MFI costs. When output is measured as the number of loans made, we find that MFIs become more efficient over time and that MFIs involved in the provision of group loans and loans to women have lower costs. However, when output is measured as volume of loans rather than their number, this last finding is reversed. Cold-water corals research in the lab and in the field: (1) growth rates of four CWC species maintained in aquaria, (2) new research areas: the Galicia Bank and the Avilés canyon (Atlantic and Cantabrian Sea), a scientific and methodological approach
Growth rates of 4 Cold-water Coral (CWC) species (Madrepora occulata, Lophe/ia pertusa, Desmophyllum cristagalli and Dendrophyllia cornigera) from the Mediterranean Sea have been measured under the same and controlled laboratory conditions over a nine months period. Results showed that M. occulata grew faster than the other three species, which presented similar growth rates. These results are discussed and also compared with the growth of tropical coral species maintained in aquaria, but in different light and temperature conditions, which corresponded to the usual culture conditions of these corals. It appeared that the zooxanthellate tropical coral Galaxea fascicularis exhibited similar growth rates than the CWC M. oculata. Further we present new research areas on the Atlantic and Cantabrian continental margin, the Galicia Bank and the Aviles canyon, which are part of the zones studied in the Spanish LIFE project INDEMARES, as well as possible targets as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) for the NATURA 2000 network. Both areas are studied considering an ecosystem approach, aboarding an integrated study of the physical scenario (hydrography, geomorphology), all ecosystem compartments (fish, endo-, epi-, and suprabenthic and benthopelagic fauna) and the trophic relationships between them. All this information, together with the study of the impact of the fisheries working in the areas, will be integrated in a trophodynamic mass-balance model and will be used to identify vulnerable ecosystems (VE) (as the CWC habitats are) and essential fish habitats (EFH). This methodological approach offers a holistic view of these deep-sea ecosystems and can be used to design more effective and successful management strategies for MPA
Varespladib and cardiovascular events in patients with an acute coronary syndrome: the VISTA-16 randomized clinical trial
IMPORTANCE: Secretory phospholipase A2(sPLA2) generates bioactive phospholipid products implicated in atherosclerosis. The sPLA2inhibitor varespladib has favorable effects on lipid and inflammatory markers; however, its effect on cardiovascular outcomes is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of sPLA2inhibition with varespladib on cardiovascular outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A double-blind, randomized, multicenter trial at 362 academic and community hospitals in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, India, and North America of 5145 patients randomized within 96 hours of presentation of an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) to either varespladib (n = 2572) or placebo (n = 2573) with enrollment between June 1, 2010, and March 7, 2012 (study termination on March 9, 2012). INTERVENTIONS: Participants were randomized to receive varespladib (500 mg) or placebo daily for 16 weeks, in addition to atorvastatin and other established therapies. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary efficacy measurewas a composite of cardiovascular mortality, nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI), nonfatal stroke, or unstable angina with evidence of ischemia requiring hospitalization at 16 weeks. Six-month survival status was also evaluated. RESULTS: At a prespecified interim analysis, including 212 primary end point events, the independent data and safety monitoring board recommended termination of the trial for futility and possible harm. The primary end point occurred in 136 patients (6.1%) treated with varespladib compared with 109 patients (5.1%) treated with placebo (hazard ratio [HR], 1.25; 95%CI, 0.97-1.61; log-rank P = .08). Varespladib was associated with a greater risk of MI (78 [3.4%] vs 47 [2.2%]; HR, 1.66; 95%CI, 1.16-2.39; log-rank P = .005). The composite secondary end point of cardiovascular mortality, MI, and stroke was observed in 107 patients (4.6%) in the varespladib group and 79 patients (3.8%) in the placebo group (HR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.02-1.82; P = .04). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In patients with recent ACS, varespladib did not reduce the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events and significantly increased the risk of MI. The sPLA2inhibition with varespladib may be harmful and is not a useful strategy to reduce adverse cardiovascular outcomes after ACS. TRIAL REGISTRATION: clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT01130246.
