Introduction: The Third International Conference on Epigenetic Robotics
This paper summarizes the paper and poster contributions
to the Third International Workshop on
Epigenetic Robotics. The focus of this workshop is
on the cross-disciplinary interaction of developmental
psychology and robotics. Namely, the general
goal in this area is to create robotic models of the
psychological development of various behaviors. The
term "epigenetic" is used in much the same sense as
the term "developmental" and while we could call
our topic "developmental robotics", developmental
robotics can be seen as having a broader interdisciplinary
emphasis. Our focus in this workshop is
on the interaction of developmental psychology and
robotics and we use the phrase "epigenetic robotics"
to capture this focus
A Measurement of the Isotopic Composition of Cosmic Ray Iron
We present a new measurement of the isotopic composition of cosmic ray iron in the energy
interval ~1550-2200 MeV /nucleon. The data were collected during the May 1984 flight of a balloon-borne spectrometer and show an average mass resolution of ~0.7 amu. The instrument employed the Cerenkov-Energy technique for mass determination. The observed ^(54)Fe/^(56)Fe ratio, 0.14 +0.18/-0.11 at the top of the atmosphere, is consistent with a solar system composition at the cosmic ray source. We also place an upper limit on the ^(58)Fe/^(56)Fe ratio at the top of the atmosphere of ≤.07. Both are consistent with previous
measurements at lower energies
Role of IL-33 in inflammation and disease
Interleukin (IL)-33 is a new member of the IL-1 superfamily of cytokines that is expressed by mainly stromal cells, such as epithelial and endothelial cells, and its expression is upregulated following pro-inflammatory stimulation. IL-33 can function both as a traditional cytokine and as a nuclear factor regulating gene transcription. It is thought to function as an 'alarmin' released following cell necrosis to alerting the immune system to tissue damage or stress. It mediates its biological effects via interaction with the receptors ST2 (IL-1RL1) and IL-1 receptor accessory protein (IL-1RAcP), both of which are widely expressed, particularly by innate immune cells and T helper 2 (Th2) cells. IL-33 strongly induces Th2 cytokine production from these cells and can promote the pathogenesis of Th2-related disease such as asthma, atopic dermatitis and anaphylaxis. However, IL-33 has shown various protective effects in cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiac remodeling. Thus, the effects of IL-33 are either pro-or anti-inflammatory depending on the disease and the model. In this review the role of IL-33 in the inflammation of several disease pathologies will be discussed, with particular emphasis on recent advances
High-temperature and low-temperature supercritical drying of aerogels – structural investigations with SAXS
Base-catalyzed silica aerogels are composed of particles with a mean size of about 5 nm, which form a chain-like porous network. Up to now it has been assumed that supercritical drying (SCD) of highly porous gels in autoclaves leaves the structure nearly unchanged. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements provide evidence that this is only true for the low-temperature CO drying process with a critical temperature Tc = 304.2 K and a critical pressure pc = 73.9 × 10 Pa. In the high-temperature methanol process (Tc = 512.5 K and pc = 80.9 × 10 Pa) with remaining water and catalyst, however, structural changes are introduced. The SAXS measurements can be explained by a narrowing of the particle-size distribution during the heating period of the autoclave process. In a double-logarithmic representation of the scattered intensity I versus the scattering vector q, intermediate slopes smaller than -4 in the Porod region as well as oscillations in an Iq vs q plot appear. On the contrary, SCD hardly affects the particle structure of acid-catalyzed gels and, if the basic solvent is exchanged for pure methanol, of base-catalyzed gels
Recent progress in silica aerogel Cherenkov radiator
In this paper, we present recent progress in the development of hydrophobic
silica aerogel as a Cherenkov radiator. In addition to the conventional method,
the recently developed pin-drying method for producing high-refractive-index
aerogels with high transparency was studied in detail. Optical qualities and
large tile handling for crack-free aerogels were investigated. Sufficient
photons were detected from high-performance aerogels in a beam test.Comment: Proceedings of 2nd International Conference on Technology and
