Compression of Atmospheric Data by Spherical Wavelets

We study the compression of atmospheric data by spherical wavelets. We show that as well the compression error as the number of non-vanishing wavelet coefficients can be controlled a priori. The efficiency of the compression algorithm strongly depends on the smoothness of the data. Numerical examples illustrate our theoretical results. Zusammenfassung In dieser Arbeit wird die Kompression atmospharischer Daten mit spharischen Wavelets untersucht. Es wird gezeigt, daß sowohl der Kompressionsfehler als auch die Anzahl der nichtverschwindenden Wavelet-Koeffizienten a priori kontrolliert werden kann. Die Effizienz des Kompressionsalgorithmus hangt wesentlich von der Glattheit der Daten ab.
