Hybrid space as a conceptual framework for adaptation

    Get PDF
Adaptive reuse is a common formula for reliving life in spaces that are no longer used for their original function, whether through physical adjustments or by incorporating virtual environments into space to Create hybrid spaces with a new dimension in which the data of memory, culture and space identity interact. Although the trends of the studies vary in their approach to deal with the concept of adapting architectural spaces, they remain in the same theme that the process of space adaptation is seen to be based on either one or the other, Oblivious to the fact that the process of building adaptation generates tension and creates hybrid spaces which belong to neither. Thus, the studies that focused on this subject does not reach the creation of a clear and specific theoretical framework for adapting architecture to changing cultural and social requirements and desires. This research attempts to examine the possibility of investing the concept of hybrid to consider different dimensions of architectural adaptation. The relevance of hybridity theory to understanding architectural adaptation is a subject that has hardly been explored. An objective of this research is to investigate this research gap represented of absence of specialized studies help to understand the relationship between the concept of hybrid and architectural adaptation and lack of the proposed concepts that accommodate new patterns of adaptation to preserve more than one characteristic (perhaps in conflict) within the original space. In light of this, the research problem is represented in the absence of a clear and comprehensive theoretical framework that enables the identification of forms of adaptation that respond to changing cultural and social requirements and desires. Hence, this research seeks to combine Bhabha's concept of hybrids and adaptation of architecture to build a clear and comprehensive perception of this concept, by using architectural studies that dealt with these subjects

Classroom design has claimed to be an important factor in supporting the pre-schoolers’ literacy development. While many studies had focused on improving the overall environment of the classrooms, few studies are established with the focus on design characteristics that enhance early literacy. Comparative studies that reveal similarities and differences of design in different contexts and culture would be a significant attempt to provide a knowledge about the proper physical environment for literacy. This study is set out to compare the appropriateness of classroom design in two private and two public preschools in North Cyprus, by evaluating the necessary design characteristics for literacy activities. The study proceeds by developing an evaluation framework that analyses the design characteristics of classroom in terms of literacy learning, then followed by evaluating the design of each classroom by using this framework. The study is finalized by comparing the findings and discussing the similarities and differences of design in examined classrooms. Findings revealed that the layout of private classrooms were more literacy-oriented in compare to public classrooms, however in none of the classrooms there was any records of specific design considerations with the focus of literacy. In general, it was concluded that in all four classrooms layout of the classrooms lacked a sensitive design with concern of literacy activities. Results also demonstrated that only focusing on classroom will not be enough and considering the support for learning literacy in all the available spaces in preschool will establish more comprehensive results. No sponso

Assessment of Adaptive Reuse Practices through User Experiences: Traditional Houses in the Walled City of Nicosia

The conservation of traditional residential architecture is crucial in terms of sociocultural continuity. When the traditional houses are no longer used for residential purposes, new functions should be assigned to them for the continuity of the heritage buildings. However, new functions should respect the originality of the heritage building. This research focuses on the conservation and reuse of traditional houses located in the walled city of Nicosia. The walled city is divided into two parts as north and south with a buffer zone between the two. This paper includes case studies of re-functioned traditional houses from the two parts. The study questions the appropriateness of the new functions that have been assigned to the traditional houses both in the northern and southern parts of the city. This research aims to measure and compare the success of the adaptive reuse practices through user experiences. As the method of study, the literature survey was carried out to identify different aspects of adaptive reuse projects. Then, selected buildings were observed through site surveys in order to discover the current condition of the adaptive reuse projects. The third step was to complete the questionnaires with different users in order to question the success of the adaptive reuse projects through the user experience. Finally, the collected data were evaluated and discussed. The respondents were asked to answer questions about each building, which are organized under the three categories of sociocultural, economic, and physical aspects of the heritage buildings. As observed with the evaluated case studies, heritage buildings that are re-functioned with the public use, such as commercial, cultural, and educational use, are more successful in contributing to the sociocultural and economic development of the city. The preservation and reuse of abandoned traditional houses in the walled city contribute to the continuity and livability of the city. For the continuity of the heritage buildings, sociocultural, economic, and physical aspects should be taken into consideration with a holistic approach

Designing enabling spaces for pre-schoolers: strategies to boost children’s control over spaces

The impact of space design and planning on children’s development is welldocumented. Enabling spaces for children are defined as spaces that are designed to be age- specific, appealing to children’s interests, and encourage them to challenge themselves in a safe and secure environment. The aim of this study is to discuss the design strategies that would help not only designers but planners and educators to create interesting, exciting and challenging learning spaces for pre- schoolers. It is argued that designing and entry for a good start, considering children control and independency in arranging the layouts, respecting children’s social interest, including additional spaces and strategies that enhance child- teacher cooperation and designing features that enhance children’s imagination and fantasy will contribute to providing spaces that are responsive to children’s control and abilities. No sponso

Quality design and appropriate space organization in preschool settings can support preschool children's educational activities. Although the relationship between the well-being and development of children and physical settings has been emphasized by many early childhood researchers, there is still a need for theoretical design guidelines that are geared towards the improvement of this issue. This research focuses on High/Scope education and aims to shape a theoretical guideline that raises teachers' awareness about the potential of learning spaces and guides them to improve the quality of the physical spaces. To create a theoretical framework, reliable sources are investigated in the light of High/Scope education and the requirements of pre-school children educational spaces. Physical space characteristics, the preschool child's requirements and High/Scope methodology identified design inputs, design considerations and recommendations that shape the final guideline for spatial arrangement in a High/Scope setting are integrated. Discussions and suggestions in this research benefit both designers and High/ Scope teaching staff. Results help High/Scope teaching staff increase the quality of a space in an educational setting without having an architectural background. The theoretical framework of the research allows designers to consider key features and users' possible activities in High/ Scope settings and shape their designs accordingly

Social media as a means of increasing non-designers’ insight into interior design

Although social media has become an important aspect of business strategies, there remains a gap in research on the impact of online content on visual professions such as interior design. Considering this gap, this qualitative descriptive study intended to investigate the impact of social media in exposing the non-designer audience to value interior design. To establish the study, a sample group of 100 non-designers was interviewed to find out whether social media played any role in increasing their engagement with and interest in interior design. Results reveal that social media increases respondents’ interest in interior design for two main reasons: the availability of a broad variety of visuals and accessing more content by exploring social media streams - both made possible by the internet. Results also confirm the role of social media in recognition of the professional potential of interior design by a non-designer audience. Findings also suggest that interior design itself is considered as a marketing strategy in social media to attract new visitors. No sponso

Today kindergartens are more than ever concerned about the integrating the requirements for children’ effective learning in designing the layout. Researches claim that preschoolers are in a constant learning and their learning process in preschool starts the minute they enter the preschools. If design and arrangement of spaces follow the educational-based strategies of learning experiences, the messages that spaces send to teachers and children will enhance the philosophy and aim of the educational. This study has considered preschool setting as a whole entity and has focused on the intersection of pedagogy, design and users with the intentionof expanding the understanding about early childhood spaces. Since every single part of the preschool setting plays a role in children’s development and learning process, in this study we have classified children’s experiences in preschool setting as arrival and departure, learning stations, common and private spaces and features that are worth considering in relation with the condition of preschool settings. Theoretical framework established in this research create a guideline for designers to learn about the main requirements of a preschoolers and preschool pedagogy. Also this study carries a universal perception over the subject of preschool education and has discussed the common feature of preschool education adopted in most of the countries. However, it needs to be considered that preschool education in differs based on the differences in cultures, religious, economy and regional features. No sponso
