Interpreting IVF from a foucauldian perspective
My research aim is to operationalize Foucault’s ‘biopower’ in three layers that is coproduction of nature and culture, construction of new forms of spaces of governance such as new definitions of race, gender or religious domains and new modes of subjectification in relation to truth discourses on the political and cultural construction of in vitro fertilization technique. I claim that production of discourses in legal institutions and media and their interactions with existing social values based upon gender, ethnicity and race found a substantial domain in which people (patients) set their standards to make sense out of in vitro fertilization (IVF) technologies and by doing so they become both the producers and the subjects through out their (bodily or visually) experience of IVF. In this sense, Foucault’s theory on bio-power can be used as an analytical tool to understand the recent developments in the assisted reproductive medicine, particularly in the case of IVF. In order to unpack the codified forms of power that reside control, surveillance and governance of bodies, I have developed a four level strategy. Firstly, I historicize IVF as a technological, cultural and economic site. Secondly, I focus on the concepts and discourses legal documents and mass media employed while telling stories about IVF. Thirdly, I demonstrate, through a survey study how these discourses are translated into people’s understanding of IVF. What differentiates this piece of research from the entire industry that had thrived upon Foucault and feminism is the attempt to combine conceptions of biopower” in a Non- Western context
Novel graphene-based electrodes for energy storage devices
Graphene sheets have exceptional electrical, mechanical and optical properties. Graphene-based nanocomposites can be utilized as an electrode for the fabrication of energy storage devices for practical applications. Graphene nanosheets were produced by an enhanced technique including graphite oxidation, ultrasonic treatment, expansion, and chemical reduction
Graphene manufacture and utilization
An improved, safer and mild method was proposed for the exfoliation of graphene like sheets from graphite to be used in fuel cells. The major aim in the proposed method is to reduce the number of layers in the graphite material and to produce large quantities of graphene bundles to be used as catalyst support in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Graphite oxide was prepared using potassium dichromate/sulfuric acid as oxidant and acetic anhydride as intercalating agent. The oxidation process seemed to create expanded and leafy structures of graphite oxide layers. Heat treatment of samples led to the thermal decomposition of acetic anhydride into carbondioxide and water vapor which further swelled the layered graphitic structure. Sonication of graphite oxide samples created more separated structures. Morphology of the sonicated graphite oxide samples exhibited expanded the layer structures and formed some tullelike translucent and crumpled graphite oxide sheets. The mild procedure applied was capable of reducing the average number of graphene sheets from 86 in the raw graphite to nine in graphene-based nanosheets. Raman spectroscopy analysis showed the significant reduction in size of the in-plane sp2 domains
of graphene nanosheets obtained after the reduction of graphite oxide
Çalışmada, sunduğu yenilikçi yaklaşımlarla Twitch’in yerini sağlamlaştırdığına işaret edilmektedir

A golden ratio for foramen magnum: an anatomical pilot study
Background: The foramen magnum (FM) is an important landmark because of its close relationship to key structures such as the brainstem and spinal cord, an extension of the medulla oblongata. Because of the similarity in their shape, the existence of a relationship between cranial length and anteroposterior diameter of the FM, and between cranial width and transverse diameter of the FM may reveal the magnificent harmony of the skull and FM. Based on this idea, we investigated the existence of this harmony in skulls that we used in our study. Materials and methods: In this study, 60 adult dry skulls belonging to the Turkish population were examined. The anteroposterior and transverse diameters of the foramen magnum and the length and width of the skull were measured. Measurements were made directly on the skull using a digital sliding calliper. New indices and ratios were applied with those measurements. Results: Our study suggests that FM width and FM length could be estimated by using the cranial length and cranial width measurements in the skull by accepting the mean of these coefficients (4.62) as the golden ratio. The average of the coefficients of cranial width to FM width ratio (4.62 ± 0.35 [95% CI: 4.52–4.70]) and the average of the coefficients of cranial length to the FM length ratio (4.62 ± 0.50 [95% CI: 4.49–4.76]) were found to be equal to each other. In order to check the accuracy of this hypothesis, FM width and FM lengths were estimated with the help of new equations. Conclusions: In the present study, the ratio between the anteroposterior and transverse diameters of both FM and the cranium was estimated at 4.62, indicating a magnificent harmony between cranial and subcranial structures. Withthis ratio, it is easy to estimate FM’s size based on simple cranial measurements. (Folia Morphol 2022; 81, 1: 220–226
Eye Injuries from Pencil Lead: Three Cases
Corneal stromal and/or penetrating ocular injuries from pencils and pencil lead are more common in childhood and may lead to intraocular infection or severe intraocular sterile inflammatory reaction. Herein we report 3 children with ocular trauma due to pencil lead injuries. The first case had corneal stromal injury caused by a pencil. In the second case, a pencil perforated the cornea and contacted the iris. In the third case, pencil lead perforated both the cornea and iris and reached the vitreous through the lens zonules. Intracameral triamcinolone (2 mg/0.05 mL) was injected after the pencil lead was removed from the eyeball. Topical anti-inflammatory and cycloplegic drops were prescribed. In conclusion, corneal and especially penetrating ocular injuries from pencil lead may have a good prognosis with the use of appropriate anti-inflammatory and prophylactic antibiotic treatment and follow-up
