Between Feminism and the Catholic Church: The Women's Movement in Poland

This article looks at Polish women's movements in the context of how women's & social movements are defined theoretically & in the light of the development of the women's movement in Poland historically. It examines how the women's movement fits into Polish society in the light of public opinion on the women's movement, women's rights & issues of equality, also looking at how these views evolved over the 1990s, & the reasons behind them. It explores the different types of women's movements that exist in Poland, differentiating between them in terms of how much they conform to definitions of 'traditional' & 'new' social movements & in terms of the role they play in effectuating change, their relationships with domestic & international organisations, their relationship to the Catholic Church, their strategies, their formal & informal nature, & other distinguishing criteria

Sponsorship: a form of prostitution or a form of traditional gender relations?

This chapter reviews data from earlier empirical research to consider the boundaries between the social position of women as indicated by their personal, family and sexual relationship. The monogamous or &ldquo;good&rdquo; woman has long been distinguished from the women who profit from sexual relationships often labelled as &ldquo;prostitutes&rdquo;. But there are new groups emerging at the borderlines of sexwork, in particular &ldquo;sponsoring&rdquo; whereby a man may provide a woman with full financial security in return not only for sex but for companionship in various activities related to work or entertainment. This paper asks how this role is perceived, as it includes elements of traditional marriage as well as traditional sexwork. Este art&iacute;culo revisa datos de investigaciones emp&iacute;ricas anteriores para reflexionar sobre los l&iacute;mites de la posici&oacute;n social de las mujeres seg&uacute;n sus relaciones personales, familiares y sexuales. Siempre se ha diferenciado a la mujer mon&oacute;gama o &ldquo;buena&rdquo; de las mujeres que obtienen beneficio de sus relaciones sexuales y que han sido etiquetadas como &ldquo;prostitutas&rdquo;. Pero hay nuevos grupos que est&aacute;n emergiendo en las l&iacute;neas fronterizas del trabajo sexual; en particular, el "patrocinio", mediante el cual un hombre proporciona una seguridad financiera a una mujer a cambio no s&oacute;lo de sexo, sino tambi&eacute;n de compa&ntilde;&iacute;a en actividades varias relacionadas con negocios o placer. Die Unterstützung der polnischen Bevölkerung für Geflüchtete aus der Ukraine

Als der russische Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine am 24. Februar 2022 begann, kam es zu einer massenhaften Fluchtbewegung, u. a. nach Polen. Über die spontane Hilfsbereitschaft der polnischen Bevölkerung, die weniger von staatlichen Stellen als selbstorganisiert von Privatpersonen ausging, wurde bereits viel in den Medien berichtet. Eine derart allumfassende Unterstützung hatte die polnische Gesellschaft seit der Entstehung der Solidarność-Bewegung vor rund 40 Jahren nicht mehr erlebt. Die massenhafte Hilfsbereitschaft war Gegenstand eines Forschungsprojektes der Universität Warschau (Uniwersytet Warszawski), dessen Ergebnisse hier präsentiert werden. Die Untersuchungen zielten auf die Formen der Unterstützung, die Motivation der Helfenden, die Durchführung der Hilfsleistungen in Städten und Ortschaften unterschiedlichster Größe sowie die sich ergebenden Schwierigkeiten. Außerdem wurde gefragt, ob die Tatsache, dass es sich bei den Geflüchteten vor allem um Frauen, Kinder und alte Menschen handelte, Einfluss auf das Ausmaß und die Art und Weise der Unterstützung hatte
