    The giant radio halo in Abell 2163

    New radio data is presented for the rich cluster Abell 2163. The cluster radio emission is characterized by the presence of a radio halo, which is one of the most powerful and extended halos known so far. In the NE peripheral cluster region, we also detect diffuse elongated emission, which we classify as a cluster relic. The cluster A2163 is very hot and luminous in X-ray. Its central region is probably in a highly non relaxed state, suggesting that this cluster is likely to be a recent merger. The existence of a radio halo in this cluster confirms that halos are associated with hot massive clusters, and confirms the connection between radio halos and cluster merger processes. The comparison between the radio emission of the halo and the cluster X-ray emission shows a close structural similarity. A power law correlation is found between the radio and X-ray brightness, with index = 0.64. We also report the upper limit to the hard X-ray emission, obtained from a BeppoSAX observation.     Distance and reddening of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822

    On the basis of a new photometric analysis of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NCG 6822 based on observations obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained a new estimate of the extinction of two fields located in the southeast region of the galaxy. Because of significant differences in the distance estimates to NGC 6822 available in literature, we decided to provide an independent determination of the distance to this galaxy based on an updated and self-consistent theoretical calibration of the tip of the red giant branch brightness. As a result we newly determined the distance to NGC 6822 to be equal to (mM)0=23.54±0.05{\rm(m-M)}_0=23.54\pm 0.05, and compared our measurement with the most recent determinations of this distance.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics (Research Note), in press (proof correction included

    The BeppoSAX view of the hot cluster Abell 2319

    We present results from a BeppoSAX observation of the rich cluster Abell 2319. The broad band spectrum (2-50 keV) of the cluster can be adequately represented by an optically thin thermal emission model with a temperature of 9.6+/-0.3 keV and a metal abundance of 0.25+/-0.03 in solar units, and with no evidence of a hard X-ray excess in the PDS spectrum. From the upper limit to the hard tail component we derive a lower limit of ~0.04 \muG for the volume-averaged intracluster magnetic field. By performing spatially resolved spectroscopy in the medium energy band (2-10 keV), we find that the projected radial temperature and metal abundance profiles are constant out to a radius of 16 arcmin (1.4 Mpc). A reduction of the temperature of 1/3, when going from the cluster core out to 16 arcmin, can be excluded in the present data at the 99% confidence level. From the analysis of the temperature and abundance maps we find evidence of a temperature enhancement and of an abundance decrement in a region localized 6 arcmin--8 arcmin NE of the core, where a merger event may be taking place. Finally, the temperature map indicates that the subcluster located NW of the main cluster may be somewhat cooler than the rest of the cluster.Comment: To appear in ApJ-Letter

    Dystonia: sparse synapses for D2 receptors in striatum of a DYT1 knock-out mouse model

    Dystonia pathophysiology has been partly linked to downregulation and dysfunction of dopamine D2 receptors in striatum. We aimed to investigate the possible morpho-structural correlates of D2 receptor downregulation in the striatum of a DYT1 Tor1a mouse model. Adult control Tor1a+/+ and mutant Tor1a+/− mice were used. The brains were perfused and free-floating sections of basal ganglia were incubated with polyclonal anti-D2 antibody, followed by secondary immune-fluorescent antibody. Confocal microscopy was used to detect immune-fluorescent signals. The same primary antibody was used to evaluate D2 receptor expression by western blot. The D2 receptor immune-fluorescence appeared circumscribed in small disks (~0.3–0.5 μm diameter), likely representing D2 synapse aggregates, densely distributed in the striatum of Tor1a+/+ mice. In the Tor1a+/− mice the D2 aggregates were significantly smaller (μm2 2.4 ± SE 0.16, compared to μm2 6.73 ± SE 3.41 in Tor1a+/+) and sparse, with ~30% less number per microscopic field, value correspondent to the amount of reduced D2 expression in western blotting analysis. In DYT1 mutant mice the sparse and small D2 synapses in the striatum may be insufficient to “gate” the amount of presynaptic dopamine release diffusing in peri-synaptic space, and this consequently may result in a timing and spatially larger nonselective sphere of influence of dopamine action

    A state-of-the-art analysis of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822

    We present a detailed photometric study of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 aimed at investigating the properties of its stellar populations and, in particular, the presence of stellar radial gradients. Our goal is to analyse the stellar populations in six fields, which cover the whole bar of this dwarf galaxy. We derived the quantitative star formation history (SFH) of the six fields using the IAC method, involving IAC-pop/MinnIAC codes. The solutions we derived show an enhanced star formation rate (SFR) in Fields 1 and 3 during the past 500 Myr. The SFRs of the other fields are almost extinguished at very recent epochs and. We study the radial gradients of the SFR and consider the total mass converted into stars in two time intervals (between 0 and 0.5 Gyr ago and between 0.5 and 13.5 Gyr ago). We find that the scale lengths of the young and intermediate-to-old populations are perfectly compatible, with the exception of the young populations in Fields 1 and 3. The recent SF in these two fields is greater than in the other ones. This might be an indication that in these two fields we are sampling incipient spiral arms. Further evidence and new observations are required to prove this hypothesis. In addition, we derived the age-metallicity relations.     Truthful Matching with Online Items and Offline Agents

    We study truthful mechanisms for welfare maximization in online bipartite matching. In our (multiparameter) setting, every buyer is associated with a (possibly private) desired set of items, and has a private value for being assigned an item in her desired set. Unlike most online matching settings, where agents arrive online, in our setting the items arrive online in an adversarial order while the buyers are present for the entire duration of the process. This poses a significant challenge to the design of truthful mechanisms, due to the ability of buyers to strategize over future rounds. We provide an almost full picture of the competitive ratios in different scenarios, including myopic vs. non-myopic agents, tardy vs. prompt payments, and private vs. public desired sets. Among other results, we identify the frontier up to which the celebrated e/(e − 1) competitive ratio for the vertex-weighted online matching of Karp, Vazirani and Vazirani extends to truthful agents and online items.</p

    Solving the Cooling Flow Problem of Galaxy Clusters by Dark Matter Neutralino Annihilation

    Recent X-ray observations revealed that strong cooling flow of intracluster gas is not present in galaxy clusters, even though predicted theoretically if there is no additional heating source. I show that relativistic particles produced by dark matter neutralino annihilation in cluster cores provide a sufficient heating source to suppress the cooling flow, under reasonable astrophysical circumstances including adiabatic growth of central density profile, with appropriate particle physics parameters for dark matter neutralinos.     Probabilistic approaches for assessing rainfall thresholds triggering shallow landslides. The study case of the peri-vesuvian area (Southern Italy)

    Ash-fall pyroclastic soil deposits covering steep carbonate slopes in the peri-Vesuvian area (southern Italy) are periodically involved in shallow landslides (about 700 events were recorded during the last three centuries, as reported by CASCINI et alii, 2008), triggered by intense and/or prolonged rainfall events, which evolve as catastrophic debris flows. In the last decades, many studies have been focused on estimating reliable relationships among the triggering of shallow landslides and the amount and duration of rainfall events, as well as the role played by antecedent soil hydrological conditions. Results of these studies have been expected to give information on temporal hazard to landslide onset to be used for setting a reliable early warning system. In this paper we present probabilistic approaches to assess rainfall thresholds triggering shallow landslides by classical empirical methods and to manage the uncertainties related to biases of data. At this scope, rainfall events related to the occurrence of debris flows along slopes of the Sarno and Lattari Mountains, known from chronicles of the last century, were analyzed by means of the empirical models of Intensity-Duration (I-D) (CAINE, 1980) and rainfall recorded in the day of the landslide occurrence (P) vs the antecedent cumulated rainfall (Pa) (CROZIER &amp; EYLES, 1980). In order to limit and to assess uncertainties related to biases of rainfall data, a comparison with the regional probability model of high intensity rainfall, carried out in the framework of the VAPI Project (ROSSI &amp; VILLANI, 1994) has been carried out. Moreover, rainfall data were processed by a bivariate logistic regression model resulting in the assessment of probability to landslide triggering, given an assumed rainfall event. The I-D empirical rainfall thresholds obtained by Caine model (1980) were compared to rainfall thresholds estimated by deterministic approaches (DE VITA et alii, 2013; NAPOLITANO et alii, 2016) showing a good match

    Seasonal and event-based hydrological and slope stability modeling of pyroclastic fall deposits covering slopes in Campania (Southern Italy)

    The pyroclastic fall deposits mantling mountain slopes in the Campania region (Southern Italy) represent one of the most studied geomorphological frameworks of the world regarding rainfall-induced debris flows threating urban areas. The proposed study focused on advancing knowledge about the hydrological response of pyroclastic fall coverings from the seasonal to event-based time scales, leading to the initiation of slope instability. The study was based on two consequential tasks. The first was the analysis of a six-year monitoring of soil pressure head carried out in a sample area of the Sarno Mountains, located above a debris flow initiation zone. The second was based on coupled hydrological and slope stability modeling performed on the physical models of slopes, which were reconstructed by empirical correlations between the slope angle, total thickness, and stratigraphic settings of pyroclastic fall deposits mantling slopes. The results obtained were: (a) The understanding of a soil pressure head regime of the volcaniclastic soil mantle, always ranging in unsaturated conditions and characterized by a strong seasonal variability depending on precipitation patterns and the life cycle of deciduous chestnut forest; and (b) the reconstruction through a deterministic approach of seasonal intensity-duration rainfall thresholds related to different morphological conditions
